Chapter 289

In the final game of the arena, all of the other players died the same way.

“Such a species—” one of the other players started to say.

JiHan sighed. “I've lost count of how many times I've heard that." Before they could finish commenting on how such a low-ranking species could make it to the final game, JiHan ignited a fire on top of his finger.

Fwoosh—!

Sure enough, every other player was set on fire.

“You bastard!”

“Is this dragon fire? I can endure this much…!”

Since they were all skilled players who’d reached the final game, they survived longer than his other opponents had.

"Not bad," JiHan admitted, but when the flames appeared in his hand again, more fire surged over the arena. Thanks to all of the fire god remnants he’d absorbed on the way there, his Red stat had reached a value of eight. It wasn’t too overwhelming of a number in itself, but the power behind it was an entirely different matter.

- The final game is nothing special.

- A normal human player would have been wiped out at the start

- We mustn't think of things using JiHan as the standard, lol.

- Seriously, only two days have passed since we lost to the birdmen.

The viewers were saying they shouldn't belittle the opponents just because they'd been eliminated by JiHan in less than a minute.

[You've cleared game 5 in the shortest time.]

Bang—! Bang—!

Celebratory bursts of fireworks appeared in celebration of him clearing the final set of opponents.

[You've cleared the special achievement, 'Space Arena - 1st Gate Conquest'.]

[You've earned 2,000,000 achievement points.]

[You've been recognized as a promising newcomer in the Space Arena.]

['Humanity' has unlocked some community features that were previously locked due to being in Bronze League.]

[Would you like to end the promotion match?]

[If you continue, a ‘Hidden Being’ will appear.]

'Community features?' JiHan thought. It was something he’d have to check later. After he read through the messages, he declined to end the promotion match.

[You're being matched with a suitable ‘Hidden Being’…]

[You've proven yourself with the power of fire.]

[A 'Remnant of a Fire God' has been summoned.]

WHOOM—!

The ground shook, and the center of the arena bulged and broke apart.

Paf! Paf—!

Streams of lava erupted from the ground and converged into a massive fire giant. “Haha! So you really succeeded! I didn’t think I’d actually be able to appear like this…!”

"Is that your true body?" JiHan asked.

“Yes. Well done!” The fire god reached a hand to himself, grabbed a fistful of fire, and pointed to the sky.

WHOOM—!

Huge streams of fire spread in every direction, but the fire went out the moment it reached the stands. As a huge stream of fire shot up into the sky, fire spread in all directions.

“As expected, it isn't possible.” The fire giant clenched his fist again.

"Why don't you tell me what we agreed upon?" JiHan asked.

“About the arena's master?”

"Yes."

“Alright. After all, a promise is a promise, but…” The fire giant spread his arms and burned bright yellow, causing flames to shoot forward. “First, I’ll consume you!”

Fwoosh—!

The fire god’s body converged into one point and closed in on JiHan. It was, by far, the most powerful fire-based attack he’d seen so far. The god was clearly trying to consume him.

"As expected. I thought your reaction was odd when I mentioned that I wasn't a constellation."

“Since you revealed yourself as prey,” the fire god said, “it's only natural for me to devour you!”

“So you consider anyone who isn’t a constellation to be prey?"

“Yes. Lower-standing beings have no choice but to be dominated by gods.”

"Hmm…" JiHan murmured. He reached his arm out to absorb the bright yellow fire as it neared him.

“How long do you think you’ll be able to do that for?!” the fire god shouted. It seemed he’d prepared a way to counter JiHan’s absorption after he saw how the other parts of him were absorbed—the fire moved to the sides and engulfed JiHan.

'As expected. He's quite strong,' JiHan thought. The fire wasn’t as easy to absorb as before, and the fallen fire god was certainly stronger than the remnants had been. Still, though, he continued to use his Red stat. It was a bit of a struggle, but he was still able to control the fire that tried to burn him.

“You truly are a persistent one…! Are you really the Red Administrator's successor?!” The fire god seemed more anxious than JiHan. “Well, I’ll just have to switch bodies with you…! I won’t hold back anymore!” Any semblance of a body crumbled, and the flames intensified.

Fsss—

A being known as a fire god was even putting its own life at risk to capture JiHan. After that, he found that, even with Red, it was too much, and his body started to burn under the powerful assault that would’ve already killed anyone else.

'It seems I won't be able to devour him with Red by itself.' JiHan had hoped he’d be able to absorb everything with the single stat, but it looked like devouring a god wasn’t that easy. In that case, he needed to use something else…

Combined Origin Divine Arts God-killing Technique: Celestial Tree's Descent.

His burned body regenerated in an instant, and chains emerged from him.

Clank—!

“Wait,” the fire god said in shock. “Don't tell me, that's…”

JiHan took advantage of the fire god’s momentary surprise when he saw the chains to quickly restrain the fire under his purple chains.

Swoosh—!

“Y-you… Weren't you the Red Administrator's successor? How could you use the void's chains?”

"Oh? These chains belong to the void?" JiHan asked.

“Y-you… Are you mocking me? Why are you asking me that?”

"I'm asking because I really don't know." The wood-attribute technique, Celestial Tree's Descent, was Gilgamesh’s technique that allowed him to regenerate like an elf, emit chains, and even create a huge steel giant from the chains. He hadn’t yet been able to fully analyze the technique, but he’d imagined it was linked to the elves since it used Life Energy.

'I learned more about Celestial Tree's Descent in an unexpected place,' JiHan thought as he tightened the chains.

Screech—!

Realistically, it would be impossible for chains to restrain a fire, but Celestial Tree’s Descent only summoned what looked like chains—they were far more than just that. The fallen fire god started losing his composure as soon as the chains fully restricted him.

“You caught me in the arena with this, but…! Oh… oh, yeah! Now that I think about it, are you, perhaps, the arena's master? Or maybe you’re his servant. Not only have you restrained me, but were you also trying to see if I’d betray you?!”

"Oh, the arena's master also uses chains?" JiHan asked.

“You… How long are you going to keep that ignorant act up for…?!” The Fire God seemed convinced that JiHan was somehow related to the arena's master.

'His resistance decreased.' JiHan's eyes sparkled. The fire god, who had mistaken JiHan for the arena's master, seemed to have lost his will to fight, and his resistance faded. Thanks to that, the fire god's energy was easier to manipulate, and he started to pull it into the Red pattern on his chest.

[You've absorbed a fire god's power.]

[Red has increased by 1.]

In the last game, JiHan had barely increased the stat after absorbing a remnant, but when he saw how quickly the stat rose, a smile formed on his lips.

"You're quick to notice, huh, fire god?" JiHan asked.

* * *

“As expected… Are you the arena's master?”

"There's no way that could be the case," JiHan retorted.

“Then you must be his subordinate. To think a subordinate would be this strong. Was that monster raising successors…? But how did you learn the language of Red?”

"Fufu, who knows?" JiHan played along with the fire god’s random guesses and assumptions.

“So you won't tell me, huh?” The fire god quickly accepted that the arena had outplayed him and quickly lost any of the fighting spirit he had left.

[You've absorbed a fire god's power.]

[Red has increased by 1.]

'This guy’s just making his own assumptions, but it’s making it much easier to absorb him,’ JiHan thought. His Red had already increased by two and reached a total value of 10. As soon as it reached the double digits, fire became even easier to manipulate. Naturally, he continued to devour the fire god at an increasing pace.

The fire wavered in desperation. “A-are you trying to devour me, Arena Master? So you're also after the Red Administrator’s position! You're trying to devour my fire and participate in the race…!”

"So you've already realized that?" JiHan casually asked. There was no need to correct the opponent’s misunderstanding.

“To think the void would cover the position of Red Administrator. Are you planning to abandon the janitorial role that you were given…?!”

"I just follow my master's will."

“Ugh… Is this how it ends?! Wh-why didn't I realize that it was a trap…?!” In the end, the fire god deluded himself into giving up after the chains from Celestial Tree’s Descent restrained him. It wasn’t long until JiHan completely absorbed him.

“You've fully absorbed a fire god's power.]

[Red has increased by 2.]

'So the true reward in the promotion match was this.' From the remnants to the true body, JiHan had fully devoured the god. At the start of the match, Red had been at five, but by the end, it was at 12. Maybe it couldn’t be considered that much of an increase, seeing as he’d absorbed a fallen fire god.

'He could hardly be called a god anymore. Considering he was a fragment of his former self, I should be thankful for this result.' JiHan decided to be satisfied with it for the moment.

At that moment, a being emerged out of nowhere in front of JiHan. The person was a humanoid of about the same height and was dressed in a neat suit with a black fedora on his head.

'His face… is the universe?' Though the being had limbs, the face below the hat looked like a field of stars.

Clap, clap, clap—

The figure looked at JiHan and clapped three times before the brightly lit stadium descended into darkness, leaving only JiHan and the universe-faced being.

"Amazing. To think you called me your master," the being said.

"Are you the arena's master?" JiHan asked.

"That's right. I was wondering who to select as the ‘Space Arena's Rookie’ for the upcoming season… but a major prospect emerged."

"I'm sorry for borrowing your name earlier."

"Fufu, it's okay. Being able to disturb an opponent is also an essential skill for a rookie. It's that fire god's fault for falling." The being turned his head to where the fire god had stood before looking back at JiHan. "Then, shall I examine your basic information for the rookie selection?"

A beam of light poured out from one of the stars in the background and scanned JiHan.

Ziing—

"NO.4212, 'Humanity'… So you're from the same species as that traitor, Gilgamesh."

"Traitor?" JiHan asked.

"Yes." The star-faced being swept a hand over his face, causing the field of stars to morph into Gilgamesh’s face. "He's a traitor who abandoned the void's calling. NO.4212, ‘Humanity’, must pay for his sin."

"How did he betray the void?"

"After completing his mission, he was supposed to enjoy his remaining life and die, but…" The imitation of Gilgamesh’s face crumpled, and the field of stars reappeared.

Paf—!

"He didn't die. That's how he betrayed the void."

"To think that would be considered betrayal…"

"Sadly, I can't give you further details." With those words, the being extended his hand.

Swoosh—

[You've met the arena's master.]

[You've cleared the epic quest.]

[You've been named ‘Space Arena's Rookie’.]

[The waiting period required to become a ‘Constellation Candidate’ has been reduced by 100 days.]

Along with a message saying he’d completed the epic quest, JiHan received a ton of rewards.

‘None of the rewards actually made me stronger.’ He felt that devouring that fire god and raising Red by seven had been a bigger reward than what the quest actually gave him. While he was checking over the messages…

"What does our rookie think about Battle Net?" the star-faced arena master asked.

"I want to get us out."

"Your species, you mean?"

"Yes. Humanity isn't suitable for Battle Net. Right now, I’m the only reason we’re having a smooth ride." Though it could’ve sounded like an arrogant statement, it was just as JiHan described it.

"Fufu. You seem to have a good grasp of reality."

"…"

"However, as long as Gilgamesh lives, invitations from Battle Net will keep coming. If you really want to get humanity out of Battle Net…" The arena master’s face morphed into Gilgamesh’s again. A moment later, a crack spread from the center of the face until it broke apart.

Swoosh—

"Kill Gilgamesh."
