Chapter 288

[Epic Quest]

- Defeat the hidden beings and meet the master of the 'Space Arena'.

[Reward: Designation as 'Space Arena's Rookie' for the next season / Reduction of the ‘Constellation Candidate’ waiting period]

'Rookie…? That's somewhat ambiguous.' JiHan slightly frowned upon seeing the contents of the epic quest. It wasn't that he was going to be given stats, so what was great about becoming ‘Space Arena's Rookie’?

'Still, having the Constellation Candidate waiting time reduced would be useful.' Star Chaser allowed him to become a Constellation Candidate if he stayed in 1st place for 300 days. He believed he’d have to wait until the next year, but it looked like that wouldn’t have to be the case if he cleared the epic quest.

'The conditions aren't hard, so I should fight the hidden beings and complete the quest.' JiHan crossed his arms and looked around. The flames that’d burned the arena had been intense enough for the other species to mistake for dragon breath. Though the ground was charred black, the seats in the stands were untouched.

'I can't see the spectators at all.' Instead of any figures in the vast stands, orbs of lights floated around and shone in all sorts of different colors. The orbs suddenly emitted a strong light and began turning red.

Flash—!

[You're being matched with a suitable ‘Hidden Being’…]

[A 'Remnant of a Fire God' has been summoned.]

Fwoosh—!

Flames burst forth from the center of the arena. “#$@$...... @$!......” Within the fire, the hidden being spoke in an unknown language.

'Battle Net isn’t automatically translating it…' The system had translated every alien language he’d encountered until then, but it was neglecting to make whatever the fiery being was saying known, for some reason. He decided to put aside whatever the being was saying and reached out to control the flames shooting toward him.

'As expected of a fire god’s remnant… It’s quite powerful.' It was similar to the First Breath he’d been hit with from Altkaizen. Any other player would’ve likely been immediately burned to a crisp.

'It can't do anything against Red.' Thanks to his rankless Red stat, he was able to easily control the fire, and the hidden pattern on his chest absorbed all of it.

“......!@$!”

Fwoosh—!

While JiHan was absorbing the fire, the scattering flames began to swirl around him. 'Thanks for coming on your own.' He effortlessly moved his hand and kept absorbing the fire.

- JiHan suddenly began manipulating fire. Did he awaken this ability during his recent training?

- Didn't he use fire while handling red lightning?

- Back then, the focus was on the lightning.

The viewers watched and debated whether he’d obtained a new power or not. They felt at ease as they witnessed him absorb the flames that seemed like they’d burn the arena to the ground only moments before.

Swoosh—!

- Seeing JiHan play after seeing so many mediocre players in the match two days ago is refreshing.

- If we talk about how fun the matches are to watch, then the match two days ago was kind of thrilling…

- There's no need for such thrills. Winning is what matters.

- The games should be easy like this.

All the while, JiHan continued to absorb the remnant of a fire god with Red, and the flames were already completely gone. Only a spark remained in the center of the arena, desperately shooting whatever flames it could at JiHan as he slowly approached.

"This thing is doing a good job of holding out." JiHan easily caught the incoming flames and absorbed them into his body. Little by little, fire energy kept accumulating inside the Red pattern.

'I’ve absorbed quite a lot…' He absorbed the energy to practice handling Red at first, but there the flames were much stronger than he expected, and his eyes shone in anticipation.

'Maybe this…’ He quickly walked toward the remnant of a fire god. More fire tried to block his path, but he simply absorbed it through his palms and walked up to the yellow flames at the center.

"Hey, do more," JiHan said, taunting the remnant of a fire god.

Fwoosh—!

Enraged, the remnant sent a huge pillar of fire soaring up into the sky. Even though it was using all it could to take him down…

'Nice.' JiHan happily stood still in the path of the flames and absorbed them all into his Red pattern.

- I feel like we just keep seeing the same thing over and over. Lol.

- Why is he standing still? He just should finish it off.

- Maybe he's absorbing the fire?

- It seems that his training was related to fire.

[You've absorbed a fire god’s power.]

[Red has increased by 1.]

'Oh… Finally.' JiHan's eyes shone. He could have suppressed the remnant instantly, but he’d waited to see what else he could get. He never thought he’d be able to increase the stat for free in such an unexpected place.

'It seems I can’t absorb more.' After the increase, he noticed that the energy from the flames no longer accumulated within his Red pattern. It was a bit disappointing.

'Shall I end things now?' The moment he decided to finish things…

“You… Are you an Administrator's successor?” the remnant said, its voice being translated for the first time.

JiHan stopped himself from finishing off the remnant as soon as he heard what it said. Was he able to understand it because he’d absorbed so much of its fire that his stat had increased?

“Can you understand what I'm saying…?!” The remnant asked, seeing JiHan’s hesitation and flickering.

"Yes."

“Are you really the Red Administrator's successor? P-please, kill me…!” Why was the remnant begging to be killed? Wasn’t it about to die anyway?

"I was planning to do that either way," JiHan said.

“No. Even if you extinguish this fire… I won't die. You have to bring out my true body.”

"How can I do that?"

“You summoned me by igniting a fierce fire. If you continue to do that, my remnants will be summoned over and over until my true body appears here.”

"Hmm." JiHan had swept away all his opponents with his fire as soon as he appeared in the arena. Was that what had triggered a fire god’s remnant in particular? "What will happen if I use something other than fire?"

“Then the remnants of another god will be summoned… Just like me, a remnant of a death god became tied to the arena as well.”

"That’s how I summon remnants?"

“Yes. That's why, please, draw out your fire and annihilate me…!”

JiHan stared at the remnant, who was clearly eager to die. "Why do you want to die?"

“I'm eternally bound to the Space Arena… Death is my only way to escape from this horrible place.”

"Hmm." Was that the true reason the remnant wanted to die? JiHan didn't take his words at face value. Most beings he’d met in the Space League, be they gods or aliens, were untrustworthy. The Thunder God, for example, had even tried to backstab him.

'If I can absorb the other remnants of fire gods to increase my stats, then it might be worth it.' His Red stat had already reached six, and each increase was incredibly important. He’d absorbed everything he could from that particular remnant, but the others might be able to give him more power.

In the end, he decided to summon more either way, but he still asked, "What will you give me?"

“What?”

"I'm sure you aren't expecting me to do a job for free." He demanded a reward.

“D-didn't you absorb my Power, Administrator's Successor?”

"That's just my natural ability. Shouldn't you give me something?"

“Something to give… I'm a remnant of a god who's been bound by the arena's chains. The only thing I can give you is this fire.”

"Don't you have GP or items?"

“There's no way I'd have such things…! Even if I did, the arena's master would have taken them all!”

JiHan clicked his tongue. From the moment the remnant said he was bound to the Space Arena, he'd been suspecting it, but it seemed that he really didn't have anything.

'It isn't that I don't have anything to gain.' He still knew of at least one thing he could receive from the enslaved remnant. "Alright. Then, give me information about the arena's master. Also, give me information about the Space Arena. If you do that, I will grant your death wish."

“Give you information…? D-did you come here without knowing those things?”

"Yes. I came here because of a promotion match."

“Promotion… You aren't a constellation?” Flames surged from the remnant, and his voice became more urgent than before. “To think you'd be this strong despite not being a constellation… Okay, fine. I will tell you, but you must summon me.”

"The information should be paid upfront."

“Talking about the arena's master will draw his attention. I will tell you once you summon me.”

"Hmm." JiHan gave the remnant a cold look. The thing had become more excited the moment he found out he wasn’t a constellation. Was he thinking something similar to what the Thunder God had?

'I can't miss an opportunity to boost my stat.' Regardless of what the remnant was planning, JiHan was sure he could subdue it. “Okay… I’ll just use fire.”

“Thanks…! Please, kill this remnant first.”

"Okay." Jihan extended his hand and wiped out the remnant, who’d been enduring for all that time, in an instant.

[You've defeated the ‘Hidden Being’, 'Remnant of a Fire God'.]

[After the promotion match, your level will increase by 3.]

[The waiting period to become a ‘Constellation Candidate’ will be decreased by 3 days.]

'Three days is too stingy.' When he saw the reward for the epic quest, he thought the three extra levels were nice, but the three-day time reduction wasn’t enough. ‘Will it give me the same reward if I keep suppressing hidden beings?’

[You've passed to the next game.]

Thus, the second game started.

“Has such a species reached the second game?”

“We got lucky with the draw. To think such a weak species would make it this far…”

“That guy's my prey. Don't touch him.”

Huge beings looked down at him as soon as he appeared in the next arena. Maybe it was because they’d already made it through a game, but each was stronger than the beings he’d met in the previous game.

- How many monstrous species like dragons are there…?

- How are humans supposed to compete against beings like this?

- Battle Net really seems to be full of monsters.

The viewers felt intimidated by the giant monsters.

"I don't have time." A fire ignited at the tip of JiHan's finger.

Fwoosh—!

The fire devoured the arena again.

- So comfy.

- He swept them all away with one attack, lol.

- Why was JiHan matched against them?

The intimidation lasted only for a brief moment, and the viewers relaxed again.

[A 'Remnant of a Fire God' has been summoned.]

Just like before, a remnant appeared, and the cycle repeated until…

[You've passed to the fifth game.]

[This is the last game.]

Finally, there was a change when he stepped into the final arena game.
