Volume 10 Chapter 406 - The Banquet at Sword King Castle (11)

Even though his skull was smashed, the Light Golem didn’t fall. He even swung a fist wrapped in lightning energy at Jin.

Jin took a stance with Sigmund again and swung at the incoming fist.

As the fist was struck down, the Light Golem’s chest was exposed and Jin thrust his blade into it.

The blade plunged into his chest, but this time as well, the Light Golem didn’t fall. Instead, he held the blade with both hands to prevent Jin from moving.

The two other Light Golems were rushing in. Jin quickly examined the trajectory of their attacks coming from the left and right, then cut the Light Golem’s body in half and deflected the incoming attacks.

It wasn’t that his movement was bad.

It was that the moment Jin dodged, the fists of the Light Golem twisted to match his dodge. It was a movement that most warriors would have a hard time imitating.

‘These bastards that were mages until just now have the movement of a high-level warrior all of a sudden. Their regenerative power makes them almost immortal, and the troublesome lightning energy on top of that…’

Anger and frustration welled up from the depths of his heart.

The Light Golem, whose head was shattered and whose body was torn in half, was rapidly regenerating his body.

Beradin’s escorts retched at the grotesque sight.

And the same was happening for the gray robe that died at the very beginning. Even though he had clearly stopped breathing, he had already stood up again, with the jewel on his chest glowing with blue energy.

The four mages who had become Light Golems seemed to be unable to use magic anymore.

“You were willing to deny your life's efforts as a mage to gain that fake power?”

The light golems burst into laughter at Jin’s cold voice.

“How can a mere mortal say that an immortal’s body is a fake power…”

“What are you laughing at? You must’ve gone insane.”

Hiss—!

As he drew Sigmund, the Light Golem that had just stood up fell to the ground. He cast Fire Orb to destroy the fallen head, and used Illustrious Bladeworks, Waterfall, to destroy the body.

The lightning energy that had been in his sword sheath poured out onto the Light Golem. After the lightning energy finished pouring down like a waterfall, as the technique’s name suggested, there was a large pit where the golem had stood.

All that remained were a few small, burnt lumps.

It was hard to imagine that those lumps had once been the flesh and bone of a living organism.

But Jin intuitively knew that this was not the end, and the Light Golems continued to smile.

“You don’t seem to know what being immortal means, 12th flag-bearer of Runcandel.”

The charred flesh quickly regained its original color.

The bones and organs that had been scattered were newly forming in mid-air, where their bearer had been standing.

The Light Golems seemed to be quite proud of that fact. Assuming that Jin’s expressionless face would be shocked.

But Jin only found the sight repulsive. He got goosebumps, as if a cockroach had suddenly appeared by his pillow.

Like reflexively stomping on a bug.

Another lightning bolt struck the body while it was regenerating. Because no other Light Golems defended him, he was left vulnerable once again, and his body scattered in all directions.

Then he began to regenerate again.

And at that point, the Light Golems went beyond being just proud and they seemed to be intoxicated by a feeling of triumph.

If Jin was normal…

At this point he would’ve been gripped by a sense of fear. He would feel like he encountered an enemy that couldn’t be killed no matter what, and his instinct to flee would’ve kicked in.

The Light Golems naturally expected Jin to react like that. No matter how strong he was, he was only nineteen years old and would have no experience fighting an immortal.

“Sigh.”

Jin shrugged and let out a deep breath.

“You’re saying all kinds of bullshit. Immortal? You’re just fast at regenerating, you mongrel.”

This wasn’t his first time seeing fast regeneration. The cored monster Ozdok, who he’d fought not long ago, also had that sort of ability.

“It’s laughable to think that you, who are supposed to be archmages, are being deluded by some fake power.”

Bzzz, bzzz!

Suddenly, ice crystals formed in Jin’s palm. The ice crystals were growing and shrinking violently, making an ominous noise.

“You can’t kill us.”

“Yeah?”

The Light Golems didn’t seem to be aware of their situation.

‘I think this is how she cast the spell?’

The ice magic that Jin was casting was the one used by his teacher, Valeria Hister.

Ice Seal.

Jin was recalling when Valeria sealed the corpse of the Vermont demon in Wantaramo Forest.

‘I asked her about it because it looked like magic that would be useful in a lot of situations, but… I don’t know if I’ll be able to succeed on the first try.’

During the few days he spent away from Wantaramo Forest with Yona and Valeria, Jin sought Valeria’s advice on magic whenever he had the chance.

He remembered the few things she’d told him about the spell Ice Seal.

—Anyone can use Ice Seal. But to properly seal something and maintain it as you want, you must know how to completely separate your mana from your body. And with that separated mana, you form a sort of padlock.

—How do you separate your mana?

—It’s hard to explain. I’ve told you the basic concepts, so try practicing it yourself.

Valeria’s explanation was flawed from the beginning.

Within ice magic, casting seals was the most difficult thing possible. Only a very small number of ice mages could do so.

And maintaining the seals as one wanted was a whole other matter altogether. The seals of ordinary mages only lasted until their mana ran out.

As far as Jin knew, Valeria was the most talented mage in the world, and Jin was the only disciple she acknowledged.

Separating mana from the body.

He suddenly remembered his first mission as a cadet.

‘Back then, when I fought Quazito Truka and used blade awakening using my shadow energy, I managed to separate my shadow energy from my body when I was suffering from shadow energy congestion. That’s probably what it should feel like.’

He could feel it. The ice crystals that had been changing randomly on the palm of his hand were gradually becoming stable.

“You won’t die. Instead, you’ll be sealed and become guinea pigs to be researched.”

As Jin reached out, a pure white energy poured out from the ice crystals and enveloped the regenerating Light Golem.

Crackle!

The Light Golem, having been frozen in an instant, seemed to stop regenerating.

But the terrifying thing was that the Light Golem’s heart was still beating.

He used his mana once more on the mana he had separated from his body to maintain the seal.

He didn’t feel any more mana being used, and that meant he’d succeeded.

‘It worked on the first try. When I was taught by her in my previous life, nothing was ever this easy.’

He sealed the body parts that weren’t regenerated in the same manner. As the ice crystals that had sealed various parts of the Light Golem’s body poured down to the ground, the smiles disappeared from the faces of the others.

“It looks like it was you lot who didn’t know what it means to be immortal?”

“You…!”

“If you think being immortal means you have fast regeneration, then that only goes to show the difference in level between you and me. You said people like me make everything you’ve spent your life working toward futile?”

Jin burst into laughter.

“It’s you who made it futile. Because you don’t have the resolve to accomplish something. And is it really your martial prowess that determines the value of your life?”

“…Your mana isn’t infinite. It’s impossible to maintain a seal like that forever.”

“You’re still mistaken. I can maintain it forever. I just don’t need to. Since I’ll seal you in pieces and hand you over to the research mages. From then on, your junior mages will take care of maintaining the new seal.”

In an instant.

The mages felt that the ‘immortality’ they had gained was distant.

If they were to be thrown into a mage’s laboratory as Jin said, the fact that they couldn’t die as they wished would actually be a terrible curse.

The Light Golem who was particularly afraid of that fact was the first to turn around and start running.

He was fleeing.

“You dare.”

The sword aura Jin released sliced off his legs. Though his body regenerated quickly, his mind crushed by fear did not.

The two legs that had been reattached didn’t move. The lightning energy that was being reflexively let out in fear wasn’t only spreading out randomly, but even becoming a danger to the other Light Golems.

“Tsk.”

While the other Light Golems were dodging their compatriot’s lightning energy, Jin skillfully maneuvered between the two and swung Sigmund.

It didn’t take long to cut them up into pieces that were easy to seal.

‘They were more annoying to deal with when they were mages.’

Watching the thunderbolts crashing down on both friend and foe, he felt a bit bitter.

The fact that so many of the world’s elite were abandoning themselves to the empty promises of Kinzelo and Zipfel.

Bzzz, Zzk, zk…!

Soon, all the Light Golems were trapped in Jin’s Ice Seal and were lying on the ground.

“Hey.”

Jin turned around and called out to Beradin’s guards.

“You guys, come back to Sword King Castle later. I’ll go with Beradin first. Shurry, keep these guys in your mouth.”

[Myaaaa.]

Shurry held the seals in her mouth, and Jin climbed on top and reached out to Beradin.

Beradin stared at the hand for a moment.

“I can’t believe they were giving you a hard time. When I think about how you were when you fought me in the Ventika conflict area.”

He wasn’t convinced.

Not only how Beradin hadn’t asked for help from the beginning, but the fact that Beradin was pushed to the brink by beings so weak. With the strength he showed in Ventika, he could’ve easily handled Light Golems like them.

So Jin began to doubt Beradin more. Well, not Beradin, but Zipfel who was controlling him.

“I wasn’t me back then, Jin.”

“That could still be the case now. The suggestion I made before still stands.”

—I have a suggestion for you.

—What is it?

—Abandon the name Zipfel.

When Jin had made a suggestion to Beradin at the end of his time as a provisional flag-bearer.

Both of them recalled that moment at the same time.

Beradin didn’t answer, but grabbed Jin’s hand and climbed onto Shurry.

The two did not exchange another word until they returned to Sword King Castle.

Though that was because Beradin had passed out from blood loss, it would’ve been the same even if he were awake and healthy.
