Chapter 6: Black Dragon Division (2)
Gray’s expression hardened.
"Are you serious...?" she asked, dumbfounded.
I didn’t answer and simply kept my hand held out.
"You’re really serious? I wasn’t even trying to assassinate you…"
Strangely enough, she didn’t look frustrated. Instead, a grin spread across her face.
"This is crazy… Fine. I’ve got plenty of daggers anyway."
She tossed the dagger, scabbard and all, before turning away.
【 Black Dragon Division, First-Year, Gray: So that’s the kind of person he is. 】
Huh? What does she mean by that?
Regardless, it was a relief that she backed off without resistance. I continued toward my office—my small, private stronghold.
Once I got inside, I checked the confiscated dagger.
* Swift Dagger [Rare] │ Confiscated
It was a masterpiece—a [Rare] grade weapon! Its attack power and durability were excellent, and it even had the special ability Swift Slash, the very technique that had cut my bangs.
This was worth at least 300,000 hika… the equivalent of 30 million won or around $30,000. An incredibly expensive luxury dagger.
I’ll keep it for my own use for now. And if I ever need money, I’ll just sell it.
It felt somewhat off-putting for a professor to survive by extorting his students, but what could I do? This was how the game worked. Survival required money—there were too many stats that needed to be raised through sheer spending.
Anyway, I was satisfied with today’s loot, even though I had barely escaped the clutches of death once again…
What a ridiculous game…
I moved on to writing my class log, though it was a challenge since I hadn’t actually conducted a lesson. Still, relying on the skills I had honed during my days of mass-writing cover letters, I managed to put something together—until someone knocked on my office door.
"Professor, you haven't left yet?" Adele asked as she stepped inside.
"I was just about to,” I replied.
"Oh, you have a request for a meeting."
"A request for a meeting?"
"Yes, Cadet Gray submitted it to me on my way here," Adele explained.
Huh? Wait a second…
So that crazy woman didn’t just go home after handing over her dagger?
I glanced past Adele toward the open door. Sure enough, Gray stood outside, flashing her fang in a mischievous, catlike grin. She held up her fingers in a V sign and playfully waved them, asserting her victory.
"Hello, Professor~"
This was way beyond my expectations.
"You told me to submit a formal request. So will you come with me now?" she asked playfully.
Dumbfounded, I could only stare.
"By the way, Professor, you’re incredible. No other professor has ever dared to talk to me like that before."
This was the worst possible outcome for me.
Was there any way to avoid going with her?
I considered my options, but nothing came to mind.
"So you’ll come with me to the Black Dragon Dorm, right? Right??"
"…Alright."
Since I felt like I’d be killed if I went alone, I had Adele tag along as we followed Gray to the Black Dragon Dormitory.
For some reason, Gray stuck close to my side, subtly nudging Adele away as she kept glancing up at me.
【 Black Dragon Division, 1st Year, Gray: Hmm. He’s handsome. 】
【 Black Dragon Division, 1st Year, Gray: I wonder how strong he is. Doesn’t look like a pushover, at least. 】
I could only hope she wouldn’t talk to me…
"Professor. Professor."
And there goes my wish.
"Are you from the Black Path?"
Assassins were divided into two main factions: White Path and Black Path, and their relationship wasn’t exactly friendly.
To put it simply, the White Path generally worked as spies for the state and nobility, while the Black Path specialized in murder, kidnappings, and other dirty work like your typical assassin.
"Why do you ask?"
"I was just curious."
"I have no such affiliation."
"Really?"
Gray suddenly stepped forward, blocking my path as she stared straight into my eyes.
According to the text box, she was debating whether to attempt another assassination or not.
"Gray."
At that moment, other students from the Black Dragon Division emerged to greet us.
One of them was Elize. The other was a boy. Their Name Tags hovered over their heads, displaying their information.
● Black Dragon Division, First-Year, Elize
● Black Dragon Division, First-Year, Balmung
The boy bowed his head and spoke.
"It’s a pleasure to meet you, Professor."
Gray appeared to have backed down for now, likely out of respect for my title.
Balmung wore stylish horn-rimmed glasses, his sharp gaze reminiscent of a Dobermann. The moment he stepped forward, his mere presence applied pressure on the entire space.
So this is the son of the High-Ranker, Pitch-Dark Constellation⚉…
As we shook hands, I took note of his aura—it was remarkable.
To my surprise, Balmung offered me a compliment.
"It is truly marvelous how well you can suppress your presence, Professor. Even at this distance, I can’t sense a thing.”
That’s just because there’s nothing to suppress…
I quietly refuted him in my head.
"Please, come inside. Every member of the Black Dragon Division has come to meet you today. It’s an extremely rare occurrence for all of us to gather—well, everyone except one person."
"Is that so?"
"Yes. Princess Rebecca is unfortunately away due to royal affairs. But our leader is still here."
He then turned to Adele and gave her a polite bow.
"My apologies, but could you please wait outside, Miss Adele? The Black Dragon Dormitory is designated as a high-security zone, as it is where the princess resides."
Adele looked at me, waiting for my input.
To be fair, she wouldn’t be much help even if she came with me.
"Wait here. I’ll be back."
"Okay~ I’ll go park the car nearby."
"Alright."
And so, I left Adele outside and followed the students into the dormitory.

The Black Dragon Dormitory was the most luxurious and antique dormitory at Hiaka Academy. This was only natural, as it housed the Black Dragon Cadet, Rebecca—the daughter of the academy’s owner, the king of Hiaka.
As expected, the interior was impressive.
A grand hall unfolded before us as soon as we entered, furnished with sofas and tables that likely cost hundreds of thousands of hika. A chandelier overhead scattered light in a dazzling display.
Some cadets of the Black Dragon Division were already seated inside.
A gut feeling hit me—all of them had been buffed by the Hell Mode. They were on Balmung’s level. Some might even be stronger.
They were all young prodigies.
【 Black Dragon Division, First-Year, Elize: He looks cool. 】
【 Black Dragon Division, First-Year, Kendrake: Who’s that? What’s his deal? 】
【 Black Dragon Division, First-Year, Kwan: …Whoa. Who is this professor? He’s not even slightly nervous! Even the department dean was tense when he came here! 】
I could feel their thoughts directed at me, each of them scrutinizing me in their own way.
Not that I really cared.
What mattered was that any one of them was capable of killing me at a moment’s notice.
"Welcome, Professor."
"…Thank you."
I casually acknowledged the greeting and looked for a seat.
My mind was hazy, so I sat wherever was open.
【 Black Dragon Division, First-Year, Kwan: Huh?! He sat in the seat of honor despite coming to a royal residence…! That’s Princess Rebecca’s spot! 】
【 Black Dragon Division, First-Year, Kendrake: Does this guy not even realize he’s in someone else’s home? 】
Oh, fuck. I sat in the wrong seat.
But it was too late to get up now.
At this point, I had to double down. Crossing my legs, I leaned back into the chair.
What are you gonna do about it, you brats?
【 Black Dragon Division, First-Year, Balmung: The new professor is surprisingly composed. Is he really that confident in himself? 】
I stayed still, but internally, I was definitely intimidated by them.
To make matters worse, I felt pathetic for feeling intimidated by a bunch of kids. I just wanted to cry and leave.
"…I can’t understand this at all."
That was when Kendrake, a massive cadet nearly 2.2 meters tall, spoke up.
"Why did you bring this professor here?"
"Hey, watch your mouth. How dare you speak so rudely in front of the professor?"
To my surprise, it was Gray who rebuked him.
"Didn’t you get your dagger confiscated, Gray? Why are you defending him?"
"Who cares about some dagger? Have some respect, you birdbrain," she shot back.
"Don’t call me birdbrain. And right back at you, who cares about respect? You even refused the professor the department dean tried to assign to us, so why would you bring in a newly-appointed one?"
"Kendrake, calm down. The leader will be here soon."
Only after Balmung, the glasses-wearing guy, told him off did Kendrake finally shut up. But his gaze toward me remained hostile.
Just then, three servants of the Black Dragon Dormitory approached the table and handed out tea to everyone.
As I considered taking a sip…
* Five-Colored Black Tea [Common, Deadly Poison]
There was poison in my teacup.
Without any resistance to poison, one sip would definitely kill me.
Everyone else drank their tea as if nothing was wrong. Surely enough, their cups weren’t poisoned.
I simply sat there, not touching my drink.
Just then, the door at the far end of the living room opened.
"Why don’t you have a try, Professor? This is quite a rare tea."
A boy asked as he walked inside with a limp, leaning on a cane.
He seemed to be the division’s so-called leader.
"Or do you perhaps not like black tea?"
His long black hair, slitted pupils, and ominous aura radiating from him made it clear.
The cadet’s appearance and vibe screamed “secret, evil mastermind.”
● Black Dragon Division, First-Year, Kaiser
I had already looked into him when researching the Black Dragon Division.
This guy was the “leader” and second-in-command of the division, only outranked by their “boss.” He had allegedly killed four professors with his own hands.
He wasn’t just a cadet—he was more like a serial killer.
"Does this look like black tea in your eyes?"
At this point, lowering myself to them wasn’t an option. The only choice was to stand my ground.
Kaiser narrowed his eyes at my question.
The others didn’t seem to understand the subtext of our exchange, so the poisoning was probably Kaiser’s independent action.
He slowly limped over to the seat opposite mine and sat down.
"…You’re as good as they say, Professor."
"What do you mean?"
"You detected Elize’s stealth, accurately measured the range of Gray’s attack, fully concealed your mana from Balmung, and now, you’ve even identified my Formless Poison, which is completely odorless, tasteless, and undetectable by mana…"
Hearing him list those out made me realize how much I had been through already.
How the fuck was I still alive?
"…You must be at least Grandmaster-rated, Professor. On the level of the other chief professors."
Grandmaster.
That title was reserved for the top 999 combatants on the continent. Out of over 10 million registered combatants, being in the top 999 was absurd.
Meanwhile, I wasn’t even Iron-rated.
"It is an honor to have you here,” Kaiser said, bowing his head.
"I’m a busy man. I went through the trouble of coming all this way, so skip the small talk and get to the point."
I couldn’t stay here too long.
"Why did the Black Dragon Division call me?" I demanded.
Kaiser nodded, his expression composed. "Understood. I will get straight to it. As you probably know, a great storm is coming."
I remained silent, listening. He was likely referring to the impending war between demons and humans.
"The world moves under Heaven’s Will, where everything flows and connects as though in a preordained manner. Even the fact that so many prodigies were gathered in one year, at one academy, in one department, must also be Heaven’s Will."
He appeared to discuss the artificial and convenient nature of this world — it was a video game, after all. However, I suppose the stronger and smarter cadets of Hell Mode would eventually become perceptive enough to notice that.
"Right now, we are prodigies, but we are still lacking in many ways. We must learn from a true professor, not someone who merely wants to use us."
I watched as Kaiser paused, his fingers tapping lightly against the table. Then, after a brief moment of contemplation, he continued.
"Every professor who came here only sought to exploit us. But, if I may say so, I believe you are different.” His slitted pupils narrowed as he leaned forward, slightly, his voice lowering.
“So I humbly ask you, Professor Dante Hiakapo…" His gaze locked onto mine, unwavering.
"Would you become our supervisor?"
