Surviving the Assassin Academy as a Professor

Chapter 5: Black Dragon Division (1)

Heavy silence hung over the lecture hall after Professor Dante Hiakapo walked out.

No one had expected the new professor to leave without even conducting his first lesson, especially after scolding the cadets.

The room remained still, every student still reeling from the shocking turn of events.

Most inexperienced professors tried to win over the cadets, hoping to build good relationships—or at least avoid being killed. After all, none of them took on this job with a genuine sense of duty to educate their students.

No. Any individual who came to work at the Assassin Department had the same goal: money.

They received generous funding under the guise of research grants, and those who survived for four years were rewarded with an enormous sum. That was why most professors applied for the position.

As a result, new professors usually avoided making enemies. They smiled, laughed along, and tried to befriend the cadets. Some even went as far as groveling before them.

Yet Dante Hiakapo was different.

This is crazy… He just scolded us and left…

Dominic—the chubby cadet from Forte’s trio—adjusted his glasses as he processed what had just happened.

To be fair, there had been more assassination attempts on Professor Dante’s first day than usual. Generally, cadets didn’t jump the gun so aggressively on the very first day.

But even then, the fact that Dante had reprimanded them for the “lack of effort and sincerity” in their assassinations was beyond imagination. No other professor would’ve said such a thing.

This professor takes assassination seriously…

That was the only conclusion Dominic could reach.

Dante would only demand sincerity in assassination if he revered it. And he had gotten angry at the students who failed to match his reverence.

Now that I think about it… We’ve been taking assassination too lightly.

The other cadets sat in a daze, quietly wondering if they had ever truly taken assassination seriously.

That was when—

“Fucking moron.”

Forte sneered at Joaquin, who had been trembling with fury ever since the professor had left.

Joaquin turned sharply, his eyes flashing with anger.

“…What did you just say?”

“Nothing.”

“…Then keep that mouth shut for good. I swear, I’ll kill all three of you right here.”

His grip tightened around the throwing star in his hand.

He had been trained by his assassin father since the age of five—stealth, shuriken throwing, precision. By now, he could slice a fly’s wings off from eight meters away. And that was the exact distance between him and the professor earlier.

Normally, professors either dodged or relied on defensive accessories.

But he deflected it with the back of his hand… without even looking.

“That prick…”

Just how much stronger was Professor Dante?

His final words still rang in Joaquin’s ears.

“Withdraw from my course, boy.”

It was humiliating. His blood boiled, rage tightening the muscles in his body. The veins in his temples throbbed as he clenched his jaws.

“…Why in hell should I sit back and listen to him say such things?” He shot up from his seat.

“Fine. I’m dropping this damn class.”

Then turned to Forte.

“But first, I’ll kill this bastard!”

Wham!

His foot flew forward, slamming into Forte’s face.

“Argh! You son of a bitch!”

Crash!

Forte tumbled over desks and chairs before quickly recovering, his hand reaching for his gun.

Just as their fight was about to escalate—

“Enough.”

Adele, the teaching assistant, entered the room. Her sharp voice cut through the tension, halting them in their tracks.

“If you continue, I’ll be issuing penalty points to both of you.”

Joaquin scowled but backed off.

Forte exhaled through clenched teeth. He had already received a penalty point this morning—another two, and he’d face expulsion.

“…Um, Miss Adele, is class really canceled?”

“Yes. It seems the professor has no intention of continuing. But your attendance will still be counted.”

“Okay…”

“I suggest you all take this time to understand your new professor’s style. Or simply withdraw if you wish.” She glanced around the room before adding, “And from now on, please take assassination more seriously. I honestly agree with the professor—your attempts all felt like mere pranks. That is all~”

With that, the cadets finally relaxed, murmuring amongst themselves as they filed out of the classroom.

At the back of the room, the Black Dragon cadet, Elize, sat motionless, her gaze fixed on the door where the professor had left.

After a moment, she raised her wrist and tapped her communication device—a watch-like gadget featuring a protruding crystal lens that projected holograms, often referred to as a “crystal ball.” She then began to contact people.

I locked myself in the faculty bathroom, clutching my chest as my heart pounded wildly.

I nearly died…

There had been so many moments where I could have died today. The only reason I had survived was sheer luck.

One of those crazy cadet bastards had the audacity to try assassinating me twice.

If this continues for multiple days, I’m going to have a nervous breakdown… Why the hell is it so dangerous here?!

In Hard Mode, the first real instance of danger didn’t happen until two weeks into the story. But then again, that was when you played as a cadet. Right now, I am playing Hell Mode as a professor.

Even so, four assassination attempts in a single day were just too much!

For now, I should be thankful to have survived the day…

At the very least, I had made it through the day and earned 1,000 star shards—though they hadn’t been credited to me yet.

I need to go home…

The quest was called [First Day on the Job], which meant I wouldn’t receive the reward until I reached home and officially ended the day.

Fortunately, I only had a single class today.

Time to head home…

I sent a message to Adele through my crystal ball.

——

- Dante: Where are you?

- Adele: Ah, just a moment. I’m submitting the documents you gave me. I’ll be there soon.

——

I just needed to stop by my office to log today’s class, then I could leave...

As I made my way down the hallway, I spotted a female cadet approaching from the other end.

She had gray hair and yellow eyes, dark makeup, and vibrant tattoos. Everything about her—from how she carried herself to her short skirt and tight-fitting uniform—screamed delinquent.

A playful fang peeked from the corner of her lips as she grinned.

Two other cadets trailed behind her, but as soon as she noticed me, she quickened her pace, closing the distance between us on her own.

A bad feeling settled in my gut.

● Black Dragon Division, First-Year, Gray

She was from the Black Dragon Division, a group that only the top seven elite, first-class cadets of the Assassin Department’s first-years could join.

In other words, Gray was one of the cadets I had to be most wary of in Hell Mode.

As she drew closer, her hand moved toward her lower back.

* Swift Dagger [Rare]

The moment the item tag appeared in my vision, my heart sank.

She had a weapon. Not just any weapon...

It was a [Rare] one.

That meant I was in real danger. I urgently checked her thought box.

【 Black Dragon Division, First-Year, Gray: Let’s check if the rumors are true.

Rumors? What rumors?! What the hell did people say about me that got her so interested...?!

There was nothing I could do here. I had no way to stop her. No way to run.

By now, she was already standing right in front of me.

Up close, I could see every detail—her long eyelashes, the sharp edge of her dark eyeliner. Her golden eyes locked onto mine, narrowing slightly.

And suddenly—

Fwoosh.

A blur streaked past my vision.

What was that?

Wait, could it be…?

【 Black Dragon Division, First-Year, Gray: Whoa, he didn’t even blink or flinch. 】

A single strand of my hair drifted down in front of my eyes.

I realized, belatedly, that she had swung her dagger right in front of my face.

【 Gray has used Swift Slash. 】

And the text box confirmed it. It displayed the name of the ability she had used.

My stomach dropped even further.

“Whoa, you’re quite something, Professor.” Gray grinned.

I said nothing and simply stared at her.

“You’ve got a great sense of distance! How did you know my attack wouldn’t hit you? I even aimed for your head from this close on purpose.”

She sounded impressed based on those casual compliments.

I, on the other hand, had no freaking clue what she was talking about.

I hadn’t even seen the dagger fly past me! Not the pre-cast animation, the actual swinging motion, or even the post-activation delay.

To my eyes, Gray had just stood there the entire time... and my hair had randomly been cut.

Fortunately, my ignorance appeared to have fooled her.

The two cadets behind her let out stunned gasps.

Meanwhile, I stood perfectly still, my heart pounding so hard that I could barely hear anything else. It felt like my lifespan was shortening with each beat of the drum.

I tried to recall her name from the list I had reviewed earlier in my office.

“Gray Habanero.”

She was undoubtedly one of the top five prodigies among the monstrous assassins in this game’s Hell Mode.

“Oh? You know me?”

“We’re not in class right now,” I replied.

Gray let out a slow, amused chuckle and tilted her head slightly.

“Hello, Professor. I am Gray Habanero, a first-year cadet of the Black Dragon Division. I don’t take your class, but I heard some interesting rumors about you today.”

I remained silent, waiting for her to continue.

“There’s been a lot of talk in the Black Dragon Division. Most professors here are weaklings, but people have started saying you’re different from those trash. If it’s alright with you, could you spare a moment? I have a suggestion regarding the Black Dragon Division.”

A sharp fang peeked from between her red lips as she grinned. Then, like a playful cat, she licked her lower lip.

“What suggestion?” I asked.

“I’ll let you know if you follow me. Let’s go.”

To my surprise, Gray confidently stepped forward and grabbed my hand.

Why was she being so touchy?

I immediately pulled away.

She glanced back at me, her smile unfaltering.

This is driving me crazy…

I needed to go home, yet here she was, trying to drag me off somewhere for who knew what reason.

Logically speaking, I shouldn’t refuse. In a game where cadets assassinated professors, the Black Dragon Division was made up of the strongest cadets. Making an enemy of them wasn’t ideal.  Plus, they were generally linked to the main storylines.

However, I knew what mattered most right now.

I had nothing to my name. I was barely holding myself together.

But I couldn’t allow myself to become a professor who blindly followed a child’s whims, especially one with no regard for manners or courtesy, and only cared about strength and power.

If I got swayed by her actions, I’d be assassinated in no time.

There was only one thing I could wield to ensure my survival.

“I refuse.”

Authority.

“Huh...?” she exclaimed.

“If you have a request, you should submit a formal request form through Assistant Adele at the office.”

Gray’s subtle smile slowly faded, her golden eyes narrowing.

“…Why? Is it because I tested you earlier?”

“That has nothing to do with it.”

“I apologize if I offended you. But can’t you still come with me? It’s just business. A simple conversation.”

“Do you always repeat yourself like this?”

Gray fell silent. A moment later, the text box displayed her thoughts.

【 Black Dragon Division, First-Year, Gray: Why…? Why is he refusing?

【 Black Dragon Division, First-Year, Gray: I don’t get it. I don’t get this professor…

She pushed her bangs aside with a tattooed hand, her expression slightly stiff.

“…Fine. Do as you wish.”

She turned to leave.

“Wait.”

She stopped in her tracks.

Now that I had refused, it was time to do what I had to do.

Gray turned back, her expression more relaxed, as if expecting me to change my mind. She probably thought I’d cave if she started walking away.

“Hmm?” She raised an eyebrow, pretending not to know what I was about to say.

She couldn’t have been more wrong.

“Anyone who violates academy rules will receive a penalty point,” I stated.

Her brows furrowed.

“...What?” she asked, taken by surprise.

“You attempted an assassination outside of class. That means you must be punished.”

The relaxed expression on Gray's face vanished, replaced by disbelief, as if she couldn’t comprehend what I was saying.

But the rules applied to everyone.

“You shall receive half a penalty point,” I continued, then extended my hand.

“And your dagger will be confiscated.”
