Chapter 97 - Flash Yaksha (2)
‘It wants me to gain the approval of two relics to level up? Will the relics open up a dungeon or something?’
Theo had already experienced a dungeon, so he understood their benefits. It wasn’t every day one came by a location where one could get both combat practice and experience.
‘The key I used to open the Lesser Drake’s dungeon is still in my inventory.’
However, if they weren’t going to lead to a dungeon, Theo wondered if perhaps he would be sucked into a mind void like when he had first grabbed hold of the White Moonlight Blade.
He checked his inventory.
[Accessing Inventory.]
First, he decided to try putting the copper ring on his left index finger. It fit perfectly, as if it had been made for him.
Click!
Suddenly, he heard the sound of a mechanical device starting up.
[‘Relic of the Primordial Dragon: Desert Ring’ has been equipped.]
[Transferring to the second dungeon.]
Theo felt his mind being sucked into the relic.
Fwooo!
When he opened his eyes, the landscape in front of him had become a vast desert.
Intense sunlight that was sharp as a dagger; heavy, sinking sand; suffocating heat... It was the polar opposite of Wintera, where he had been born and raised.
‘Why did it have to be a desert of all places…?’
Throughout all his lives, Theo had never been to a desert, so he was at a bit of a loss.
[You have entered the Scorching Desert. Survive for 72 hours.]
[72:00:00]
The countdown started immediately.
[71:59:59]
[71:59:58]
…
…
“Okay, I should look for a place where I can set up a base camp first,” Theo said to himself.
In every quest or challenge that he had faced so far, whether real or an illusion, the penalty had always been death.
Theo assumed that this place would be no different. Even if that may not have been the case, he didn’t want to find out and risk wasting a potential regression cycle.
‘If I regress again, Father and the Black Dragon might not treat me the same.’
It wasn’t unlikely considering their hatred of regressors.
Most importantly, however, the two had a special ability that could defeat regressors. Whatever it might have been, if they used it against him, it would be game over.
‘I should try my best for now.’
That was what Theo decided as he carried himself forward.
However, as his feet sank into the sand, he felt his stamina drain out of him. Eventually, he couldn’t hold back his thirst anymore, so he purchased some water from the system Shop.
How many steps had he taken? He had already lost count, dazed by the heat.
Rumble, rumble…
‘What the?’
Sensing a slight tremor in the sand, he stopped dead in his tracks.
First, he questioned if the heat was making him hallucinate, but after focusing his senses, he was certain that the tremors were intensifying. Something large was approaching him…
Out of nowhere, the sand started swirling around him, creating a massive whirlpool.
The whirlpool quickly expanded outward, pulling him into the ground. What had only been a few meters wide now spanned over a dozen meters. The tremors strengthened with its rampant growth.
Because it had all happened in the blink of an eye, it took a moment for Theo to assess the situation.
He noticed a ginormous void spanning the entire width of the whirlpool deep beneath. Upon closer inspection, the edge of the void was serrated with dozens of layers of teeth, and a giant tongue was hiding beneath the sand.
‘A Desert Wurm!’
Multiple times larger than a Sandworm, the Desert Wurm was known as the King of the Desert. Just like Drakes, Griffins, and Wyverns, it was considered a lower dragon species.
The mission likely demanded he survive 72 hours against this monstrosity.
‘Just my luck…!’
A Desert Wurm was a high-class demonic fiend that even high-rank swordsmen like Kleve or Evelyn had only half a chance of defeating alone.
Before the Desert Wurm could close its jaws, Theo pulled out his Death-bits, controlling them with his psychokinesis.
Fwish! Fwish!
He created stairs in midair with the daggers, utilizing them to leap high into the air.
Chomp!
The Desert Wurm shut its jaws. Theo made it out by the skin of his teeth.
However, as the jagged, saw-like teeth clamped down, the lethal acid the creature was famous for sprayed outward.
Roooaaar—!
Unhappy that its prey had escaped, the Desert Wurm quickly turned its massive body and chased after Theo.
“Damn it,” he cursed as he hastened across his death-bits.
However, the Desert Wurm was much faster than him, and it almost took a bite of his ankle.
‘If only I could summon Umbra! But it’s not working…!’
Worried that he would just get caught at this rate, Theo swung his Drake Blade with a ferocious intensity.
Ba-thump! Ba-thump! Ba-thump!
After squeezing out all the magic power he could muster from his dragon heart and dantian, the two power sources intermingled, expelling a blast of hot wind.
He hit the Wurm straight in the face with a mix of steam and lightning.
Blast—
The creature unleashed a deafening screech as the attack landed, wounding its carapace. Unfortunately, that was nowhere near enough to immobilize it. Rather, the attack only irritated it further, cementing its fixation on Theo.
However, Theo wasn’t ready to give up quite yet.
Clenching his teeth, he swung his sword faster, unleashing a torrent of light. The amount of speed and power he imbued into his movements sent small shockwaves resonating from each swing.
«Quintuple Dragon's Claw - Dismemberment»
Blaaast—
The torrent of light slashed across the Desert Wurm’s face, kicking up a cloud of white smoke.
Kiiiiiiegh!
The Desert Wurm floundered in pain, making the whole desert shake.
It was bleeding profusely after it regained its composure, cuts littered across its carapace. Regardless, it attempted to resume its pursuit of Theo.
However, Theo was long gone, leaving nothing behind but a cloud of white smoke.
The Desert Wurm roared with rage, trampling the sand around it and creating even more tremors.

‘I knew it,’ Theo thought. ‘It can’t find me when I’m standing still.’
He was observing the monster while hiding between a pile of boulders nearby.
‘It detected me by the sound of my footsteps… Or, rather, the vibrations caused by my footsteps.’
From what he could recall, monsters that primarily lived underground typically had bad eyesight and hearing. With such poor senses, Theo wondered how it had been able to locate him.
That was when a thought came to him: what if it had another sensory organ capable of detecting his footsteps?
The vibrations caused by the wind shifting the sand and the vibrations caused by his footsteps were distinctly different. If it was capable of detecting them and discerning the difference, it could make up for any subsequent positioning inaccuracies by simply swallowing the whole area where it discovered its prey.
‘Still, I can’t just sit here forever…!’
Theo gulped as he stared at the ground, observing the vibrations that stirred the sand.
Thump… Thump… Thump…
Some quakes were smaller than others.
‘That’s not the only the one Desert Wurm around. There’s at least a dozen others,’ he realized.
Having detected the vibrations of the fight, the Desert Wurms that had once been scattered throughout the land all quickly started converging here. They were like sharks drawn to the scent of fresh blood!
Rumble… Rumble… RUMBLE…!
As the tremors intensified, Theo checked the timer.
[69:44:38]
He needed to come up with a plan to escape the impending clash between the Desert Wurms. Once they all arrived, he wouldn’t be able to escape even if he wanted to.
However, that was when a thought occurred to him.
‘What will happen if I activate the other relic’s mission while I’m still within this mission?’
He quickly opened up his inventory.
‘Let’s give it a try.’
He reached into his inventory and pulled out the butterfly earring. Then, he quickly attached it to his left ear.
Pshk—
The pin of the earring stung quite a bit as he pierced it through his skin.
[‘Relic of the Primordial Dragon: Icebloom Butterfly’ has been equipped.]
[Transferring to the third dungeon.]
Theo’s vision started to flicker.
[You are currently in the middle of the second dungeon mission. You may not begin the third dungeon mission.]
[The two missions are colliding.]
[The two relics are fighting for priority.]
Vwoom! Vwoooooom!
Vrrr— Vrrrrrr—
The ring and the earring began to quiver violently. They were fighting each other, arguing about who should go first.
Crack! C-c-crack!
The blue sky began to shatter, rifts breaking through the air.
[The collision of the missions has brought chaos upon the dungeon.]
[The durability of the dungeon is rapidly decreasing.]
‘I knew it!’ Theo grinned.
Every relic he encountered so far had a guardian protecting the relic. Each of them was tremendously prideful, unwilling to relinquish ownership before their approval had been earned.
Theo suspected that the relics’ pride would not only surge when faced with a potential owner but with each other as well. If two missions were activated simultaneously, neither relic would be willing to surrender.
[The two dungeons continue to collide, attempting to invade each other.]
[The dungeons are becoming entwined.]
[The third dungeon has materialized]
Turbulent icy winds started blowing into the desert from the rifts in the sky.
Fwoosh—
The cold winds quickly filled the atmosphere, cooling the heat of the desert. White fog coalesced into swirling storm clouds, which pulsed with lightning and thunder.
Boom! Crash—
From within the thick mist, a gargantuan dragon resembling a butterfly appeared. It was the Faerie Dragon, said to have graced humans with the ability to control the weather.
Kraaaaaagh! Kaaagh!
Sensing new prey, dozens of Desert Wurms leaped from the sand, baring their vicious fangs. In response, the Faerie Dragon flapped its wings, viciously pelting the Wurms with a torrent of heavy hail.
It was the beginning of a new clash.
* * *
[You have entered the Snow-covered Ice Mountain. Survive 72 hours against the Faerie Dragon.]
[72:00:00]
In the distance, the Ice Mountain repeatedly appeared and disappeared, like a mirage.
When the Ice Mountain was in view, the rain and hail intensified. When it disappeared, the Wurms fought harder, ready to tear the Faerie Dragon apart.
These beasts were said to be the strongest among the lower dragon species. Naturally, their clash quickly brought pandemonium to the dungeon.
Either they no longer cared about Theo, or they wanted to test him after deciding on a victor amongst themselves first.
“Whatever the case is, this should drain both relics…!”
Now Theo was at a crossroads. Should he try to escape? Or should he pray that they knocked each other out?
Or, perhaps the third option…
‘What if I wait until they’re exhausted and I take them down all at once?’
Neither mission told him to hunt the guardians, simply ordering him to survive instead. This meant that under normal conditions, the missions’ difficulties would render defeating the guardians nigh impossible.
However, it seemed quite possible right now.
‘If they were creatures in the real world, I would try using «Wyvern Taming». It’s a shame they’re not real.’
As his gaze grew tranquil, Theo felt the sword at his hip shake.
It was the White Moonlight Blade. Or, more precisely, the Griffin inside it.
The Griffin was demanding its release. He wanted to show the other two relics their place, just as Theo had done to him.
He wanted to show Theo how he was far superior to the Desert Wurms or the Faerie Dragon.
‘All right,’ Theo thought. ‘Do as you wish.’
He smirked as he reached for the White Moonlight Blade.
Flash—
As if it had been waiting for this moment, it fired a white moonbeam in every direction.
