Chapter 15

In the heart of Lumene Academy sprawled the vast training ground known as Elecra.

It hosted the school’s major events like the entrance and graduation ceremonies.

Today, all Lumene students gathered there.

"They’re here."

"Haha, they’re soaked."

"Hahaha! Look! I’ve never seen such a little kid here before."

The grumpy senior students jeered.

Several self-respecting freshmen shuddered with shame, but the freshmen kept their composure.

Leading them to Elecra's center, Artianne instructed, "Group by region. Captains, step forward as representatives."

Students lined up neatly in five rows.

And naturally, the line of students from the west was notably sparse.

Watching from the podium, professors murmured.

“What happened? There are far more students from the west than I thought there’d be."

One professor, asking with a nearly accusative tone, spoke to Albi.

But Albi remained stoic.

Leo lingered at the rear of the Western line.

"Oh, Leo! Hey!"

Chelsea, his entrance exam partner, greeted him with a grin.

"Just catching my breath!"

Leo smiled back, basking in Chelsea's friendly presence.

"Join the line, quick."

"Sure thing!"

Chelsea, standing next to Leo, was chattering. “I was so in awe, watching you fight, you know. I even signed up for a knight studies class! I’m thinking of minoring in it.”

"But aren't you aiming to be a battle mage?"

"Yep!"

Leo paused, then suggested, "Then shouldn’t you focus more on sorcery?

"Why? I'm good with sorcery. Do you think I still need to train more?"

Leo was right about to say something as he looked at Chelsea, mildly embarrassed.

"We will now begin the entrance ceremony. First, a word from the principal."

Chelsea quieted as the professor on stage spoke.

Alongside him, an elderly man took the podium.

The newest students stood tense.

There wasn’t a single person there who didn’t know the identity of this elderly man.

Kalian Badian.

One of humanity's greatest heroes.

"You've come a long way, newcomers."

Kalian's words brimmed with passion.

"I won't preach. But I’ll share a little bit of inspiration!"

Boom!

Kalian slammed the podium with his fist, igniting a fire in the freshmen's hearts.

"Believe in yourselves when becoming heroes! Push your limits! Those who do not…!"

Freshmen held their breath, captivated by his presence.

"...have no place in Lumene."

With that, Kalian stepped down.

There was a moment of silence in his wake.

And then…

Wooooooooooooooooah

They erupted into cheers.

His brief speech stirred them more than any long lecture could.

Glancing back, Kalian flashed a peace sign at the professors.

Some scratched their heads at the sight.

"H-hello, Principal!"

"Would've been cool if you kept it solemn."

"The more I teach, the more my expectations of incoming classes shatter."

The professors, begrudgingly, knew.

Kalian, the revered hero, was actually just a frail old man.

The professor onstage sighed in agreement.

"Next, the freshman representative will speak."

All eyes in Elecra fixed on the freshman representative.

The cream of Lumene's crop, the ultimate geniuses.

A standout hero candidate among hundreds.

The captains at the front of their respective lines tensed.

With everyone’s undivided attention, the hosting professor broke the silence.

"Please welcome to the stage, this year’s freshman representative: Leo Plov."

"Leo Plov?"

"Leo who?"

"Not one of the captains?"

The freshmen buzzed with confusion.

Even the six captains looked perplexed.

Professors, unfamiliar with the decision, shared in their confusion.

The announcing professor intervened. "Leo Plov, please come to the stage."

Leo rose.

On the way, he met Chelsea's astonished gaze.

Out of the corner of his eye, he saw Carr, sitting in another row, unable to hold his jaw shut.

For an ordinary student, not one of the captains, to be selected as the freshman representative was uncommon.

Surprised seniors, too, glanced at Leo.

All eyes fixated on him.

‘I’m the freshman representative?’

Leo was suspended in a state of wonder, himself.

Despite his strong performance at the entrance exam, he expected Celia or Abad to have outranked him.

They were most active during the exam, sharing the top-spot, and co-captaining for their region.

Leo finally arrived at the podium, seeing Albi, the proctor of the Western exam, there.

Doubtful, Leo met Albi's approving smile.

He knew it was probably his doing.

Stepping up, Leo scanned the crowd.

A speech awaited him on the podium.

"To esteemed professors and students, thank you for welcoming us, the freshman class. The Lumene freshmen are honored to—"

Leo delivered the speech smoothly, nerves absent.

Though, a mix of emotions filled him.

Among the crowd, questions and curiosity swirled about his surprising selection over the captains.

Envy simmered among some.

"Once more, thank you all. Leo Plov, freshman representative."

Applause erupted.

"Great job, Leo. How about a few words of your own?"

The professor grinned.

Allowing the freshman representative their own impromptu speech was Lumene's tradition.

An opportunity to allow one to inspire and challenge others.

‘Is this a challenge to those who were vying for this position?’

Leo smirked.

Being the best attracted many competitors.

Gazing down at the freshmen, Leo spoke.

"I'm Leo Plov, your freshman representative."

The hosting professor's disappointment showed at Leo's polite greeting.

'The new student representative is a quiet one. Well, not bad for an honor student.'

Talking recklessly wasn't an easy choice here.

It was hard to come out guns blazing during your first impression with every single student.

'It looks like this'll be a normal ceremony this year.'

"If you want my spot, then take it."

The professor's eyes widened.

The freshmen gasped.

Leo smiled once and stepped down.

He had caught on and followed the school's wishes to the T.

"That's quite something!"

The hosting teacher fumed silently.

Some of the seniors chuckled.

"This ceremony's something else."

"A bold new kid."

All eyes were on Leo.

Yet, Leo descended without a glance.

Returning to his seat, Leo locked eyes with Celia.

Celia, staring at Leo, snorted, chin held high.

Beside her, Abad smiled at Leo.

"Wow, Leo's the freshman rep?"

He and Chelsea whispered excitedly when he returned.

"Too bad it wasn’t your brother."

"I agree, it’s a shame. But seeing you fight, I understand."

Chelsea nodded, arms crossed.

"I never mentioned it, but my brother probably recognizes you, too."

"Really?"

Leo glanced at Abad ahead.

After a little longer, the ceremony ended.

Afterward, freshmen were guided to their dorms.

The campus had separate dorms for men and women.

Grand mansion-like buildings stood side by side with a central garden.

A dorm manager addressed them.

"One room per person. Curfew enforced. Overnight stays permitted for special reasons only."

The manager gave a short sigh.

"No entry of the opposite sex’s dorm without reason."

Her tone turned stern.

"Please respect these rules, even if you're interested in the opposite sex."

"Yes~" the freshmen replied cheerfully.

The manager smiled bitterly.

Despite this warning, she knew some would break the rules out of teenage rebellion.

"Now, find your luggage, unpack, and meet back here in an hour."

Freshmen chatted, found their bags, and checked into their rooms.

"Oh, Leo, we're neighbors!"

"Really? Awesome."

Leo chuckled at Carr's excitement.

"Surprised you got rep."

"Me too, didn't expect it."

"Must've aced the test."

"I guess the examiner must've liked what they saw."

Leo and Carl headed to their room, catching others' attention.

"He's the freshman rep?"

"Why him over the captains? Got connections?"

"Can you be rep just with a fancy background?"

'Getting attention from day one, huh?'

After changing their clothes and starting to unpack, they reconvened, only to be met with an exhausting schedule.

First up, class assignments.

Lumene primarily offered major-oriented classes, but there were also general education classes.

In these classes, Leo would study alongside his classmates.

For first-year students, there were ten sections of this class, numbered from 1st to 10th.

Leo, Chelsea, and Carr were all assigned to the fifth.

After receiving this assignment, they were led to one of the many facilities within Lumene Academy.

The academy's site was vast, being one of only four heroic academies globally.

Touring the important facilities took half a day.

Returning to the dorms after the field trip, they were met by the dormitory inspector.

"Nice to meet you. I'm Obelio, the first-year dormitory inspector. Thank you for your hard work and attention today. Starting tomorrow, you'll be attending a week-long exploratory class."

During this period, students could choose any subjects they liked.

Even if you came in with the goal of becoming a knight, this was an opportunity to take sorcery classes, or summoning classes.

It was a chance to discover hidden talents.

"Class starts tomorrow, so get some rest tonight."

With Professor Obelio's dismissal, the students headed to their dorms.

"What a busy day!"

Carr stretched, showing signs of fatigue.

"I’m excited for tomorrow, though! Anyways, good night, Leo!"

"Good night."

After exchanging their goodbyes, they retreated to their respective rooms.

Leo changed into pajamas and slipped into bed.

Not so slowly, he fell into the comforting embrace of sleep.
