Chapter 16

The next morning arrived swiftly.

After breakfast at the dormitory restaurant, Leo made his way to the Hall of Beginnings, the first-year class building.

Today's main class was on knighthood.

As an exploratory class, students from various departments, including the knight studies department, joined in.

Due to the large number of students, the class was split into groups.

In Leo's class, he found Chelsea and Carr.

Carr used the exploratory class as a chance to mingle with fellow knights.

Chelsea aimed to take a knight studies class as a minor in her path of becoming a battle mage.

Gathering in the training grounds, the students awaited their instructor.

It wasn't long before Professor Ain arrived.

"I've already introduced myself, so no need for repetition. This is my associate, Claria Libache."

Claria nodded politely.

Only Lumene graduates hand-selected by professors could become adjunct professors.

They assisted in teaching classes and could step in for professors if needed.

Professor Ain surveyed the students.

'Leo Plov, Celia Zerdinger, and Duran Moira.'

Satisfied with the attendance of the student representative and captains, Professor Ain proceeded.

“Students from the sorcery and summoning departments, please raise your hands."

More than half of the students did so.

Professor Ain then directed them to Claria.

"You'll work with the adjunct professor, who will teach you to apply sorcery and spirituality to martial arts."

Meanwhile, Ain, with the knight studies students, began his class..

"Today marks our first lesson. We'll delve into Aura and the fundamentals."

The students perked up at Ain's words.

"Three forces stem from the use of mana: Aura, sorcery, and summoning. Does anyone know why Aura stands out?"

The freshmen were at a loss from the very first question.

Why was Aura different?

It wasn't a subject many had contemplated.

Typically, knights only focused on getting a better feeling for mana for the sake of enhancing their Aura.

But Celia raised her hand, identifying herself.

"Celia Zerdinger."

"Go ahead, Celia."

"It’s because Aura loses its mana properties during transformation."

"Correct."

Sorcery amplified one's mana, and summoning resonated with the user's will, retaining the nature of their mana.

However, Aura was a force created from mana, absorbing and processing it into the body.

In the process, the mana would lose its fluidity, making it challenging to control.

"Now, can anyone explain how we utilize the accumulated Aura in our bodies?"

Even Celia found herself at a loss at this one.

‘How do we explain its utilization?’

‘All you do is… try, right?’

All the students had done was intuitively wield its power.

But there was no clear explanation for how it was used exactly.

Of course, Professor Ain wasn't seeking answers.

All he was doing was introducing the basic theory underlying Aura studies, a new subject in Lumene, only first added to the curriculum the year prior.

Ain aimed to introduce Lumene to teachings previously exclusive to Azonia's Beastman Hero Military Academy.

Hence, it was natural for the first-years to be unfamiliar with the concepts.

As Ain began to unpack his explanation, someone else raised their hand.

Professor Ain seemed satisfied by the confidence of this student.

Few professors disliked students who presented confidently, even if wrong.

"Leo Plov."

"Yes, go ahead."

"We utilize Aura's power by burning mana."

Ain appeared surprised.

"That's correct. Do you also know what crucial factor allows one to harness Aura?"

"Physical strength."

"Well done, Leo. Have you studied Aura before?"

"No, never."

"How did you come to know this?"

"It's just the fundamental essence of Aura."

Sometimes people overlooked the nature of the power they wielded.

While using Aura without understanding its essence or principle wasn’t necessarily problematic, understanding it made a significant difference.

Aura, heavily influenced by the user's will, benefitted from understanding its characteristics.

"Excellent. Celia gets 5 extra points, and Leo earns an extra 10."

Their classmates' envy shifted towards the two.

"As Leo mentioned, we utilize the force generated from burning mana when we use Aura."

Professor Ain's tone turned serious.

"Starting this year, I'll integrate principles of Aura studies into all my classes for first-years."

"Professor! What's Aura studies?"

"It's the study of Aura. A core subject at Azonia Academy."

The first-years were astonished by this unheard-of field of study.

"Since today is our first class, we'll spend the day learning about using Aura. Today, we’ll be touching on the Aura Step."

The Aura Step maximized one’s jumping power by concentrating Aura on the legs.

‘The Aura Step.’

Leo's eyes sparkled.

It was a new concept, unheard of in Kyle's time.

"Anyone with Aura can learn the Aura Step, but its effectiveness varies with skill."

Professor Ain lifted his foot.

His silver Aura shimmered, and he seemingly levitated.

The students erupted in awe.

Walking lightly through the air, Professor Ain continued.

"Next, I'll explain the principle of the Aura Step."

Thus, Ain's lecture on the Aura Step commenced.

"The operational principle of Aura isn't vastly different."

Strengthening the body with Aura naturally boosted one’s energy.

The Aura Step was a practice, focusing Aura and power on enhancing a certain area of the body: the leg muscles.

Mid-lesson, an errand boy entered.

"Professor Ain. Professor Bethes is looking for you and Assistant Professor Claria."

"Professor Bethes? I understand."

Nodding, Ain addressed his students.

"The adjunct professor and I will be away briefly, so practice the Aura Step on your own."

With that, Professor Ain departed.

"Leo, want me to teach you the Aura Step?"

Celia approached with a mischievous grin.

Leo responded with a skeptical expression.

"Do you want me to call you ‘Miss’, too?"

"Why are you being so mean?"

Celia folded her arms, smiling.

"I'm older than you, so if you call me ‘older sister,’ I'll help you out."

"I won't learn from you. Your methods are shady."

"What? You can't even use the Aura Step as the freshman representative? That's pathetic."

Their conversation was interrupted.

Duran Moira, the captain of the Central Examination, stood nearby.

Duran glanced at Leo and clicked his tongue disapprovingly.

"I can't believe they made this guy the class representative. Lumene's standards seem questionable."

"Are you upset that I'm the class representative?" Leo stepped forward and asked, prompting a smirk from Duran.

"It's not a complaint. It's just surprising that someone who can't even do the Aura Step is my class representative."

Duran looked around at the other students, voicing his annoyance.

"It's not just you. There's more than one person here who can't handle the Aura Step. Ha, it's embarrassing for the entire class.”

Some students bristled at his words.

But it wasn't easy to challenge him.

Regardless of what anyone said, he was at the top of the class.

He was undeniably one of the top talents among the nearly 500 freshmen.

In response to Duran's comments, Leo spoke up.

"If you aspire to be a hero, shouldn't you maintain some dignity?"

"Dignity? Are you lecturing me about heroism? I come from a long line of heroes."

Duran belonged to the Moira knight principality, founded by the hero Dior Moira, known as the Golden Sword, fifty years ago.

Having pursued the path of a hero since childhood, Duran took pride in his lineage.

"What does your lineage have to do with it?"

"It matters because a hero is one who is chosen."

"I disagree. I think a hero is someone who never gives up."

"It's laughable to hear such idealistic notions from a mere class representative."

"Do you think you may rely too much on your lineage?"

"To me, my lineage is just a bonus. There's something else I believe in."

"What's that?"

"Skill, Leo Plov."

Whoosh!

Duran closed the distance between him and Leo in an instant.

Other students marveled at his incredible speed.

The average student couldn't even comprehend such speed.

But Leo just smirked.

"You think that’s fast?"

"I think I need to demonstrate again."

Duran chuckled angrily.

"If you're so confident, want to have a race to see who's faster?"

"Don't be ridiculous, Duran Moira. Is it sensible to compete with someone who hasn't even mastered the Aura Step yet?"

As Celia intervened with a frown, Duran seemed satisfied.

"Celia Zerdinger, I have a question for you."

"What is it?"

"How did Leo Plov become the class representative?"

"How would I know?"

"Didn't he stand out because the West's captains are incompetent?"

Chelsea, among the group of students observing, stepped forward.

"Did you just insult my brother?"

"I just spoke the truth, Chelsea Lewellin. I had high hopes for him, expecting one of the top heroes in the Lord's empire, but I never imagined he'd be beaten out from the spot as the class representative. It's disappointing, honestly."

Celia's smile turned cold.

"You seem quite upset about not becoming the class representative. But have you considered that maybe you weren’t chosen because you simply weren't suitable?"

"If I were in charge, he wouldn't have become the class representative." Duran, looking smug, spoke confidently.

"He's just lucky to be holding that position as class representative."

"Let's go, Leo. There's no need to listen to this nonsense."

"Absolutely."

Agreeing with Celia, her rival, Chelsea playfully pulled down the skin under her eye with her finger and stuck out her tongue.

"I've got a team of bodyguards, it seems."

Duran's faction of Central-region students jeered in unison.

Leo grinned.

"I'll accept that challenge."

"Leo!"

Celia scolded.

"Isn't it too much to just let that slide? And..."

Leo flashed a toothy smile.

"You've got to assert yourself against guys like him."
