Chapter 57

Sira Guild was renowned as the greatest mercenary guild in the empire, but anyone with even the faintest knowledge of the empire’s shadows knew it was far from ordinary.

Its members took assassination and espionage as mere side jobs. In truth, it wouldn't be an exaggeration to say the guild ruled over the empire’s underworld.

“Master.”

“Start your report.”

And the ruler of that very guild was the so-called light of the empire.

“There are continuous eyewitness accounts of Saintess Lian. She was last seen north of the empire, near a mysterious tower—”

“I know where it is.”

Sedin was completely hidden in the dark.

His direct subordinate, Kayla of Tes, knew why her lord had such habits. Once her lord was in the shadows, nobody could find him.

“I’m sure you have heard reports that the tower vanished as suddenly as it appeared.”

“...Of course,” Sedin replied in a choked voice. Though he didn't say it aloud, he suspected it was Renee’s doing. The tower had completely disappeared ever since she returned to him that day.

“What is she doing in the north?”

“There aren’t many other reports, but rumors say she’s living in the lost tower. Some claim she occasionally comes down to the village for necessities before vanishing again.”

The only thing Sedin couldn’t grasp was Renee’s connection to the tower.

“None of this information is useful.”

“Please spare me, master.”

And what does the saintess have to do with the tower?

There was nothing he could understand, making him fall further into a spiral of confusion.

Sedin had been leading Sira long before he became a Swordmaster. By fifteen, he held more knowledge than anyone else in the empire.

There was nothing he didn’t know—except when it came to Renee.

No matter how hard he searched, he couldn’t uncover a single thing about her. Her thoughts, desires, circumstances, and how she saw him. Every step closer pushed her further away, yet just when he felt she was beyond his reach, she seemed almost within his grasp.

Nothing had ever unsettled him like she did. And that night left him more lost than ever.

Just... just what is she thinking?

Sedin sighed. He felt pathetic. How could he let his subordinate see him like this? This was why he kept himself hidden.

…At least now, I might... just might have a chance.

“Master...?”

“Are you blocking the information well?”

“Of course. We’ve ensured that no one else can get their hands on it.”

Truthfully, Sedin couldn’t care less about Lian. At first, he didn't understand why Renee was so determined to find her.

“Find the saintess.”

Ever since he realized Renee was truly set on locating her, he stopped questioning.

The reason didn’t matter when it came to Renee.

I am simply finding her because it is your wish.

“May we kill her?”

Sedin shut his eyes. What would Renee want?

She said she needed Lian, but she never mentioned needing her alive.

…Sometimes, it feels like she cares more about that woman than me. Should I just get rid of her? It’ll be like she never existed. Will Renee let go of her, then? Will she look at me more?

After a long moment of consideration, Sedin came to a decision.

“Capture her alive.”

“Yes, master.”

“But.”

Kayla slowly lifted her head. A sliver of moonlight cast a pale glow over her master’s feet.

“...Crazy.”

[The <Temptation Monarch> nods in agreement.]

[The <Evil Blood Lord> screams for the damned bastard to be brought to him.]

Oof. Renee watched the <Evil Blood Lord>, who had been throwing a fit for a while now.

“Actually crazy.”

[The <Temptation Monarch> is concerned you’ve gone mad too.]

“But… Sedin… Sedin is…”

[The <Temptation Monarch> says he saw you both K-I-S-S-I-N-G.]

[The <Evil Blood Lord> throws up blood.]

“What does that mean?”

[The <Temptation Monarch> genuinely considers ending the contract and finding someone else.]

[The <Temptation Monarch> asks what you think it meant.]

“I tried to find the answer, too, you know.”

Renee sat up straight.

“First of all, Kirill.”

What does a forehead kiss mean?

After the party, Renee had gone to Kirill for answers. He had the looks, so she figured he must have some experience with romance.

“Y-Y-Y-You…!”

But Kirill instantly flushed red, covering his face with his arm.

“How can you ask something like that…! W-Who did that to you? Wait, no. You’re not someone who would just take that. Who is it, huh? Huh? Who did you do that to?!”

Hm. He’s no help.

The next person she went to was Ante.

“It depends on what kind of relationship it is, wouldn’t it?”

“What?”

Renee tilted her head to the side.

“If it’s between family, it’s a show of affection.”

“Urm… What if it’s between a mentor and their student?”

“Then it only means one thing,” Ante declared matter-of-factly. “It’s a sign of respect.”

“...Respect?”

“The only feelings a student can have for their mentor are respect.”

“Uh, there’s nothing else…? Can there be…?”

“It is impossible,” he said sternly. “Logically, there cannot be any other emotion.”

“I see…”

For some reason, Renee felt disappointed. Her shoulders slumped.

“Why do you ask? Did you have a mentor?”

Ante eyed her with suspicion.

“No! Not at all.” She frantically waved her hands in the air.

“You can’t possibly have an academic student…” He looked her up and down, narrowing his eyes.

“Whether it’s your student, mentor, or even the imperial prince—if anybody commits such indecency toward you…”

She waited expectantly.

“Kill him.”

“What?”

He has to be kidding. Renee’s jaws dropped.

“I will cover your tracks no matter what. You have permission to kill him.”

Ante’s expression was dead serious.

“Hey, wait!”

Renee clamped her hand over his mouth. Were you always like this? Aren’t you supposed to be the logical one?

“Why are you being so extreme?!”

You didn’t even care when I kissed someone on the mouth before, let alone my forehead! She scrunched her face in frustration.

“It’s obvious, not extreme. How dare someone sully a Makius with their lowly mouth… We must kill three generations of their family,” Ante declared, his voice disturbingly calm.

“Baffling. Are you telling me to never love or marry?”

“No.” Ante crossed his arms. “I am telling you to get permission from the duke and me.”

“But it’s my forehead.”

“Your forehead is not just yours.”

He pressed his finger against it.

“It belongs to the Makius.”

No one here is normal!

Exasperated, Renee ran out.

So, according to Ante, Sedin’s kiss meant respect.

I don’t know why that hurts my pride. She pouted. It’s true I’m his mentor… I am… but I don’t want to be… I never wanted to be in the first place. I never thought of him as a student! I’ve never even taught him martial arts before!

[The <Evil Blood Lord> asks just what you think of him as, then.]

“Hm.”

She pondered for a while.

“My subordinate…?”

[The <Temptation Monarch> exclaims, Look at that! Didn’t I say she’s hopeless?]

After enduring a long scolding from the constellations, Renee got up, covering her ears.

“Whatever, I’m leaving. I’m going to Sedin. Isni!”

At once, the door swung open.

“Yes, my lady?”

Isni appeared, drenched in sweat, as if she had run all the way to her.

“Get ready. We’re going out.”

“W-Where would your grace like to go?”

At that, Renee hesitated.

Where… would I go… to find Sedin?

He had always been the one coming to her, so, of course, she was lost. She didn’t even know where he lived.

[The <Temptation Monarch> laughs at you.]

[The <Evil Blood Lord> laughs at you.]

“Urm, Isni.”

“Yes, my lady?”

Renee’s grave expression made Isni anxious.

What could possibly be so serious?

“...Where does Sedin live?”

***

Of course, a mere knight like Isni didn’t know where Sedin lived, but she did know which guild he was a member of—Sira. Renee had heard of it before as well.

And so, the two arrived.

“Look at the size of this place,” Renee muttered in awe. This is almost as big as the duchy.

“It is the greatest guild in the empire, after all.”

“I wonder where Sedin is.”

“I heard Sir Ansirad was the guildmaster here.”

The guildmaster… Come to think of it, she recalled having heard that as well.

Renee shrugged and stepped inside.

“...Hm.”

[The <Evil Blood Lord> is surprised by how well the guild is managed!]

[The <Temptation Monarch> notes that Sedin seems to have talent in management, though not as much as him.]

Yeah. Renee nodded.

As a former guildmaster, this was impressive. She’d expected a chaotic environment, but the Sira Guild was divided systematically.

“Welcome! How can I help you?”

A young receptionist greeted them with a polite smile.

They’re nice, too.

“Oh, we’re—”

“We are here to see Sira’s guildmaster. Lead the way,” Isni interrupted, speaking with authority.

“Oh, our guildmaster?”

For an instant, the receptionist’s face twisted into a look of disgust.

What was that look? Renee blinked.

“Pardon me, but do you have an appointment?”

“We do not!” Isni declared confidently.

The receptionist smiled—strained and obviously fake.

“We’re sorry. You will have to get a queue ticket and wait.”

“A queue ticket?”

That’s a thing?

Taken aback, Renee accepted the slip of paper from the receptionist.

Number 31,234?! Don’t tell me there are 30,000 people in front of me.

“Thirty thousandth?! How long does that take?!”

“You will have to wait about 31 years,” he replied with a grin.

Renee and Isni could not return the smile.

Wow, Sedin. You sure are popular. Renee shook her head. Of course, she wasn’t going to wait 31 years.

“You see, I’m close with Sedin.”

“Ah, yes, I see!” The receptionist’s tone didn’t change. “Our guildmaster’s rule is that everyone must wait their turn, so I’m afraid we can’t make exceptions.”

He didn’t believe them at all.

“Then will you at least deliver my message to Sedin?”

“I will try my best. What is it?”

He doesn’t look like he will at all.

At this point, Renee was starting to feel discouraged by his perfect customer service smile.

“Just let him know Renee Makius was here.”

An eerie silence fell over the room. As soon as the words “Renee Makius” were uttered...

All the employees turned their heads in unison.

“...May I have your name again, ma’am?”

“Renee… Ma…kius…”

This time...

“We have been waiting for you, Lady Makius!”

All of the employees rushed forward in unison.

Truly, it was a terrifying sight to behold.
