Chapter 55
In all honesty, Ante did not want to enter the party venue.
Of course, he didn’t—not when this entire event was meant to celebrate him for taking credit for someone else’s achievements.
Yet, Ante had no power to protest against the duke. He was the pride and young lord of Makius, the perfect future Duke Makius. That was what he had been taught since birth: follow the duke’s orders and stay loyal to the house. It was impossible for him to defy his father.
And so, he delayed his entrance until the last possible moment—it was the only act of resistance he could muster. Yet time was unrelenting, and he could not delay any longer.
Bracing himself for the sea of eyes and overwhelming attention, Ante entered the party alone, his eyes shut as if shielding himself from the inevitable.
…Why is it so quiet?
He should have heard the trampling footsteps of the nobles, the murmurs and forced pleasantries. Confused, he slowly opened his eyes—only to be met with shock.
No one... nobody cared about him. In fact, it seemed as if no one even noticed his arrival.
Concealing his surprise, Ante made his way to Kirill.
"Ah, you’re here."
"...The atmosphere feels off."
"Oh, right. You wouldn’t know. You’re late."
Kirill nodded toward the duke.
“Father is livid right now.”
“Why?”
“Renee is totally the main character here,” Kirill snickered.
“...She is?”
“Yep.”
“But…how?”
Ante frowned in disbelief.
There was no denying that Renee stood out, given her family name and beauty. But the attention she usually received wasn’t positive—rather, she was the target of mockery.
"She’s doing well today, you know. No tantrums, and she’s handling any discourtesy with grace."
"...Renee?"
Ante was simply incredulous. She’s handling discourtesy well? She’s not pouring wine over someone’s head or throwing a fit?
“Yep. Anyone would say she’s doing perfect.”
“I see.”
That was good news, then. What kind of brother would be glad to hear his little sister was a disgrace? Ante nodded in contentment.
"And she looked really close with the prince. Everyone thinks she’s going to be the next empress."
The next empress… Ante smiled bitterly. He had no doubt everybody had forgotten about Lian. Everyone except him.
“I think she’s finally grown up, Ante.”
“That would be a family miracle.”
“But Ante...” Kirill hesitated for a moment. “Isn’t it a little weird?”
“What exactly?”
“I mean, don’t you think… she changed too fast? She’s not the Renee we knew.”
Ante mulled over his words. Renee had indeed changed—very suddenly. That much was undeniable.
“But it’s a good thing. That means we don’t have to be ashamed of her anymore.”
“I guess that’s all there is to it, huh?”
“Yeah.”
Yet, despite Ante’s nonchalance, Kirill couldn’t shake the unease creeping up his spine.
“By the way, where’s Renee?”
“I don’t know. She suddenly disappeared. I guess she’s out on a walk or something.”

Back to the so-called "grown-up" Renee—
“Re… nee?”
She had her arms wrapped around Sedin on the balcony.
[The <Temptation Monarch> huffs steam at how awkward you are at pulling in a single man despite having maxed-out physical abilities!]
[Ring!]
[The <Evil Blood Lord> has been unblocked.]
…Right now?
Renee froze, her arms still wrapped around Sedin.
[The <Evil Blood Lord> cannot believe his eyes!]
[The <Evil Blood Lord> explodes in anger, demanding to know what just happened while he was gone for a day!]
[The <Temptation Monarch> tells him every last detail!]
You treacherous–!
[The <Evil Blood Lord> is appalled!]
[The <Evil Blood Lord> furiously demands you to get off that rascal!]
[The <Evil Blood Lord> threatens to ban his skills and never talk to you again if you don’t let go of him right now!]
…That’s so petty.
Defeated, Renee slowly let go of Sedin and awkwardly smiled.
“Urm, well. That’s enough. Then—”
“No.”
“Huh?”
Sedin hugged her tighter, showing no intention of letting go.
“You can hold me and let go whenever you like.”
[The <Evil Blood Lord> throws up blood!]
I tried not to hold onto you for your sake. I am too worthless compared to you. But you held my hand.
“I am not going to let go of someone who holds me.”
I hope that means I can yearn.
“S-Sedin...”
Renee barely managed to cool down her burning face.
“I knew. I knew your heart does not align with mine.”
She didn’t answer—she wasn’t even sure how she felt. She had been emotionless for too long to truly understand her feelings.
“But that doesn’t matter. It’s too late.”
“What?”
Too late? Renee looked at him. What’s too late?
“I’m not going to step back, even if you push me away.”
[The <Evil Blood Lord> coughs up more blood in bewilderment!]
[The <Temptation Monarch> quickly stops the bleeding!]
…This is going to make me all bloody, too. My face is burning.
“A-Alright. How about we talk after you let go?”
“No.”
“I-I understand how you feel, now let go.”
“No.”
I-I’m just… scared my constellation will kill you if you don’t let go…
[The <Evil Blood Lord> starts reciting the ancient blood curse!]
“Let go! I-I’ll hug you again!”
“Yes, Renee.”
The moment the words left her mouth, Sedin immediately let go.
This was his plan all along?
Renee was beginning to suspect she had just gotten tangled with someone far more cunning than she’d thought.
“...Huh.”
Yet, her thoughts vanished the moment they separated.
“Y-You’re…”
“This is why I didn’t want to let go,” Sedin muttered.
His face was as red as hers.
“...You vex me, Renee,” he said, giving her a pointed look. “You’re as red as I am.”
“No? I’m totally not as red as you.”
[The <Temptation Monarch> comments that you’re not acting your age.]
Don’t bring that up. Do you want to get beaten by a thousand-year-old?
[The <Evil Blood Lord> wails.]
[The <Evil Blood Lord> rages that he cannot send you off to that pretty weakling, no matter how pretty he is. He did not raise you like that.]
Who raised who now? Renee cursed at the chat window. And how is Sedin a pretty weakling? Are you crazy?
[The <Evil Blood Lord> declares he is not going to send you off to anyone weaker than him!]
Yeah, and I’m saying, who do you think you are…?
This isn’t going to end anytime soon. I’m just not going to look anymore.
Renee sighed and dismissed the chat window, unaware of just how much she would regret that later.

The two returned to the ballroom. They couldn’t linger outside any longer, not when there were people calling for them.
“...We have some business to take care of first, right?” Renee asked.
You’ll wait for me a little longer, right?
Sedin gave her an understanding smile.
“I will always be by your side, Renee.”
That always makes me embarrassed. Renee awkwardly coughed.
“L-Let’s head back now.”
She opened the window, but before Sedin could step out, the door suddenly slammed shut.
Isir stood there as if he had been waiting for this very moment. Without hesitation, he grabbed her wrist and pulled her to the side.
“Can you neglect your partner like this, princess?”
Renee sighed.
She had known Isir was waiting for her. That was precisely why she had ended things with Sedin early.
“Neglect? Your Highness. Can you not be alone for even 30 minutes?”
“I can, but I can’t bear to see my partner with another man,” he whispered, his tranquil expression contradicting the sharp edge in his voice. He was aware of the watching eyes. Only Renee could see the anger simmering beneath his mask.
“What does it mean for you to be alone with Sedin when everybody is watching?”
“What are you thinking? Is it such a problem for me to have a brief talk with your knight?”
“It is,” he countered instantly.
“Then keep being unhappy, Your Highness. That won’t move me.”
“You’re—”
“Enough, Your Highness.”
A hand suddenly intervened between them. Sedin stepped forward, gripping Isir’s wrist tightly.
“Please don’t be oppressive to Renee.”
“Is that an order, Sedin?” Isir asked, his voice low.
“Yes.”
For the first time, Isir’s eyes flickered with surprise.
Understandably so, as Sedin had never revolted to this extent. There was no doubt he was different.
It was understandable. Sedin had never gone this far before. Even when he protested in the past, something had always been holding him back. Isir had assumed it was his commoner status—after all, obedience was ingrained into commoners’ very bones.
That was what the nobles and imperial family believed. That generational defeat and powerlessness couldn’t be erased.
He stood in front of Isir now—not as a commoner or a mere knight, but as something else entirely.
“Please, step back.”
Solely for Renee.
