Chapter 72: May You Rest in Peace

We took a moment to digest everything that had happened.

Saint Aimar became an undead, but thanks to me, he was resurrected as a spirit. It turned out that Saint Aimar did not intend to rebel—he lost his life simply because of a treasure he had accidentally acquired. For some reason, the emperor was unable to obtain said treasure, and it still remained in the underground tomb.

So we had to make a decision.

“Then I guess we’ll have to go to the underground tomb.”

Of course, the conclusion was simple. We came all this way, fought dozens of undead, and almost died, so we couldn’t just leave, even if just out of spite.

“That’s right. We have to go. It’s why we came here in the first place.”

“If we leave now, we’ll get nothing.”

Ernest and Leila agreed.

“If we go now, we’ll have suffered like a dog but ended up with nothing,” Priscilla concluded.

“That’s right. The Academy will investigate soon.”

We didn’t have much time to talk anymore. The necromancy that was overflowing from the hall had disappeared, and divine power had returned. Even if it was a restricted area, there would be plenty of reasons for people to come investigate.

"Alright. Let's go."

Then Saint Aimar said, “I don’t have much time either. Look. Isn’t my spiritual body getting blurry?”

"Ah."

As he said, he seemed to be gradually fading away.

“What will happen now?"

“I’m going back to God’s side, of course. It was only thanks to the years I spent as an undead and the resentment I accumulated during that time that I was able to stay in this world until now.”

“I see.”

"Before I go, I need to repay the four of you who freed me, so let's move quickly."

We immediately followed Saint Aimar. I expectantly wondered what kind of treasure could be hidden in the underground tomb. What on earth could it be that the emperor starved dozens of people to death then massacred them all over it, and still couldn't get it?

Thump, thump.

The road to the underground tomb wasn’t difficult. Thanks to the bright spirit body that glowed like a chandelier, there was no need for torches or luminous stones, and the traps leading to the underground tomb were all broken or destroyed.

Skeletons were everywhere. They were probably soldiers who went to the underground tomb under the emperor's orders.

"Ooooh…This really is a style from three hundred years ago! It's really hard to see this kind of imperial armor!" Ernest, being the crazy explorer that he was, was quickly sketching as we passed by.

We soon arrived at the catacombs.

Creeaak…

As I opened the heavy stone door, the dust that had gathered over the long passage of time came pouring down. Thanks to that, my vision was blurred for a moment, but I was able to see soon.

“It’s here.”

Unlike other underground tombs, all of the coffins and graves here were empty.

“If things had gone as planned, after this hall was built, the underground tomb would have naturally been filled over time… but everyone died before that could happen.”

It was ironic.

There was something that stood out at the end of the underground tomb. On the altar where the ritual to appease the dead was to be performed, there was a small box.

“Yes, that is the treasure. The treasure that the emperor wanted so much but could not open or take.”

The box was small enough to hold in your arms. There must have been a reason he couldn't take it.

"I received that by chance during my ascetic training. It was in the cave I crawled into when I was unconscious after starving for two weeks."

Priscilla reacted to the word ‘asceticism’.

“I’m going on one when this semester ends.”

As far as I knew, asceticism was a kind of qualification test to become a full-fledged cleric. You started out with nothing and returned with a mark from a designated place.

“Where did you go, Saint Aimar?”

“It was a place called Atalia Island in the north.”

“Northern Atalia Island… Most people avoid that place. You’re truly amazing.”

“Did you ever regret it? If you had thrown away that treasure, this wouldn’t have happened,” I asked.

Saint Aimar shook his head. "No. Thanks to that treasure, I was able to complete my asceticism. It was also thanks to that treasure that I was able to help the poor."

"What do you mean?"

“The treasure contained an unknown power that I could not understand. Thanks to that power, I regained my stamina, and wherever I went after completing my asceticism, I became famous. When I went into battle as a warrior priest, I was able to wield the morning star with greater power, and when I helped the poor, my divine power was stronger.”

Saint Aimar added, "I think it might have been a gift from God."

“That could be the case.”

But the emperor couldn’t take it, huh? Well, now we were about to find out why.

“Can we take it?”

“Of course. Isn’t that what you came here for in the first place?”

"I asked because I figured you’d agree.”

Saint Aimar chuckled at my teasing. “Dane Sogres. What a curious fellow you are.”

“I hear that a lot.”

We approached the box.

"This is really exciting, isn't it?"

“Do you want to open it?” I asked Ernest, who seemed particularly excited.

"Huh?"

“If it weren’t for you, we wouldn’t even have known about its existence.”

Ernest looked at me with a moved expression on his face. “D-Dane… can I really open it?”

“Yes.”

He loved exploring, so giving him this chance wasn’t much. Of course, we needed to discuss the ownership of the treasure a little more.

Anyway, Ernest approached the box and took it carefully. He even took a deep breath.

“Then, I’ll open it.”

Squeak—

Finally, the box opened.

"This is…"

Inside was a small, red gem.

"A jewel?"

The outside of the box was worn, but inside was a luxurious cushion, on top of which lay a jewel.

A red gem.

A ruby? No. It felt completely different from a ruby.

“This was the treasure the emperor was after.” Ernest, in true explorer fashion, took a pair of gloves out of his bag and carefully placed his hand on the jewel.

However—

"Huh?"

He couldn't lift it.

“Hey, why can’t I lift it?”

“What? Why are you like that?”

Ernest flailed around, holding the jewel in his hand. However, the jewel showed no sign of budging. It was as if it were a huge lump of iron.

"I-it’s like it's completely stuck?"

“I’ll try.” Leila stepped forward, but the result was the same.

“What is this?”

It looked like it was just placed lightly on the cushion, so it didn't seem heavy at all, but the jewel didn't move.

“What the hell is going on?”

The same went for Priscilla.

The three looked at the red jewel in the box with bewildered expressions. They couldn’t lift the jewel when it was right in front of them.

“That’s why Aemon V couldn’t take the treasure,” Saint Aimar said at that moment.

When I looked back, I saw that the spirit had become fainter. His voice also sounded somehow thinner.

“I wish you could take it, but it’s a shame. Well, even if someone else came, they wouldn’t be able to take it…”

Ernest tried to lift the jewel along with the box, but neither budged. Was it attached to something?

"Then how did you bring it here?"

“I don’t know. Maybe it’s an object that contains an ego like the ones said to have existed in ancient times?”

It was possible. However, even Saint Aimar was not fully convinced of his words.

“Of course, I never conversed with it. I might have just been a carrier.”

A jewel that even the person who used it didn’t know anything about.

“With the treasure right before our eyes…”

“Fuu. What should we do?”

Amidst the regretful voices, I approached the jewel without thinking. Then I reached out and grabbed the jewel.

However一

"Huh?"

“Huuuuuh?”

“D-Dane?”

I could lift it.

The jewel was now in my hands.

“…”

“…What is going on?”

The jewel that three people could not lift, which even Emperor Aemon V could not take, was now…

…in my hand.

“…Haha.”

It was so absurd that I couldn’t help but laugh in disbelief.

What? For what reason?

“…Hmm. I did think you were different… but for you to be able to take something not even the emperor could take…”

I put the jewel down again and tried to make Ernest hold the jewel.

“Can you lift it?”

“It’s not moving an inch!”

As if it were all a joke, the jewel was light in my hand. It didn’t feel like it weighed as much as a lump of iron or anything like that.

“Dane, what are you really…?”

I had no choice but to answer Leila’s blank question.

“I don’t know either.”

I wish I knew, too. Maybe, I could find out with this jewel.

“Saint Aimar, I think it’s time we left, but I have one last question.”

“By all means, my boy."

“Which cave on the island of Atalia did you get this gem from?”

“I’m not sure, but it was a cave on the east coast of the island.” Saint Aimar seemed to have noticed my intentions and gave me a kind warning. “If you’re going there, you’d better be well prepared. It’s an incredibly harsh place, so much so that it’s called the Cold Island.”

I nodded.

Meanwhile, Saint Aimar's spirit became even fainter. Now, I could clearly see the objects behind him through his spirit body. The light he had been emitting had almost died down as well. It now looked like a candle rather than a chandelier.

It was as dangerous as a candle in the wind.

“It’s time for me to go now.”

“I’m glad you’re free.”

Saint Aimar smiled broadly at my words.

"If it weren't for you, boy, I would have continued to be consumed by resentment. Oh, and thanks to you, too. Leila Thermion, Ernest Dylan, and Priscilla Neriel."

It seemed like he was truly grateful as he called each of us by name. It would have been more fun if we had met while he was alive.

“Not only me but everyone here has been liberated thanks to you. And… there’s something I almost forgot.” Saint Aimar pointed to the back of the altar. “I forgot about it for a long time while living as an undead. Would you get the necklace behind the altar?”

"A necklace?"

“I sensed my coming death and hid it.”

Ernest quickly headed to the back of the altar. Sure enough, there was a necklace.

“It’s well made.”

It was old and plain, but it seemed like a well-made necklace, judging from the way Ernest admired it.

"Of course. It's a family heirloom and my personal subspace necklace.”

"Ah."

Everyone's eyes widened. He meant to bestow his personal subspace on us.

“I’ll give you the code, so remember it well. It’d be a shame if you can’t open it after getting it. The items inside will probably be quite useful.”

Saint Aimar actually told us the code needed to open the subspace, and Ernest quickly wrote it down.

I expressed my sincere gratitude.

“Thank you. Truly.”

“Well. It’s a pretty cheap price to pay for liberating me. It would have been better if I had just stayed alive. By the way, Dane Sogres. Fighting you was truly enjoyable.”

“For me as well.”

Boom! Boom! Boom!

Just then, we heard a sound. It sounded like it was coming from above. Judging from the footsteps…

“It’s over.”

Leila, Ernest, and Priscilla's faces turned pale. It was clear that they were people dispatched from the academy.

“If we get caught, we’re all dead!”

“Don’t worry. There’s a secret underground passage over there.” Saint Aimar, now almost transparent, spoke quickly. “Over there, just press the device behind the altar.”

A secret underground passage.

“You could have escaped, too.”

“How could I leave behind the poor who believed in me and endured for so long? Where could I have gone?” Saint Aimar grinned. “The poor were sent away, and only the priests and I remained.”

No matter how I looked at it, it seemed like the emperor was the bad guy.

“Farewell, Dane Sogres.”

Saint Aimar.

A savior of the poor.

“May you rest in peace.”

Shhhk.

Finally, the spirit dispersed. He’d finally left.

“He really…”

There was silence for a moment.

"Let's go."

"This is absurd! This is a complete battlefield!"

“Find them! This place was originally full of undead!”

“Damn! What the hell happened in this hall?!”

Shouts came from above.

Putting the jewel in my pocket, I repeated, "Let's go."

Now it was time to sneak back.
