Chapter 127: Let’s Take It

The restricted area.

It was a place where silence reigned, the most secret area in the academy.

Due to the recent undead rampage in St. Aimar’s Hall, security had been strengthened, making it difficult for even a single rat to enter.

In that place一

“Now.”

A group of people were moving.

There were five of them, all wearing black robes, with their hoods pulled down so low that it was difficult to recognize their faces.

“Don’t stop, keep moving. If you delay even a little, you’ll get caught.”

They moved stealthily, but without stopping, as instructed by the man in front.

“Ouch, I’m dying. When will this damn shift end?”

"There are about forty minutes left now."

“Please hurry up and end. Yaaaawn. I’m so tired.”

5 o'clock in the morning.

The workers who came out at 4 o'clock were the sleepiest. Could it be because of their already poor concentration? The guards took no notice of the five men passing not far away.

Finally, the men arrived in front of the building that was once used as Saul Hangston's laboratory.

“Zeke.”

As the man leading them reached out, the man called Zeke handed him a thick, neatly folded cloth. Then, as the man spread the cloth and placed it against the magic barrier, surprisingly, the magic barrier that Saul Hangston had installed disappeared.

It disappeared and created a kind of passage.

“Move quickly.”

While the lead man held the cloth, the other four stepped inside.

And when the leader came in last and retrieved the cloth, the barrier appeared as if it had never been disturbed.

The leader clicked his tongue as he looked at the cloth, saying, “What a ridiculous magic barrier. It renders the cloth woven from Turan’s thread useless in just one use...”

The cloth made of precious thread had now lost its effectiveness and was no better than a piece of ordinary cloth. It was evidence that the magical barrier installed by Saul Hangston was formidable.

“Soon, we’ll be able to build this barrier.”

The leader nodded at Zeke’s words.

"We just need to capture all of the mana from Saul Hangston's essence inside. We're the last ones. The glory is ours."

Everyone shuddered at the thought of that glory. It was as if they were getting goosebumps just thinking about it.

“Let’s go in.”

Then, the leader released the magic barrier installed on the outer wall lightly. It was a magical barrier that paled in comparison to Saul Hangston's.

Afterward, he felt around the wall, grabbed a hidden handle, and pulled with all his might.

“Let’s go.”

Another passage was finally revealed. It immediately led to the basement where the mana stone containing Saul Hangston's essence was located, and also an escape route in case of emergency.

"I guess we can finally get some rest now."

“Whew. I almost couldn’t breathe.”

“How long do we have to stay this time? Two months?”

“The people who were replaced took two months, and we might take longer. We have plenty of food, so I think it’ll be fine.”

Everyone seemed to have relaxed now.

‘It makes sense. After infiltrating the academy, we ran without stopping.'

From the moment they infiltrated the academy, they moved and moved in a state of extreme tension. Once inside the restricted area, they moved without even being able to breathe.

But now they could rest. It would get better once they took turns sleeping.

“Everyone, let’s eat first.”

“Alright. Let’s get some hot food out and eat.”

“Who made the stew I was given?”

"Probably Helgas?"

“Oh, then I’m not eating the stew. Why would you eat stew from hell?”

It was at that, moment that the five men walked down the passage to the basement, their tensions relaxed...

Click.

The magic light that had been shining in the passageway suddenly went out.

“Wh-what the?”

At that moment, they had no time to understand the situation when一

Swiiiish!

There was a sound of something flying, then a dull thud and a crashing sound from the man in front.

“L-leader?”

Instead of an answer, a thud was heard.

What happened?

They were so relaxed and in such an unexpected place that they couldn't even think about how to deal with it.

Pow!.

Next was the man right behind the leader, Zeke.

Likewise, Zeke, who was hit by something flying in from the darkness, fell to the ground without even a scream.

"T-traps..."

The scream that burst out like a fit of rage was short-lived. A dull shock struck his chest, and the man collapsed, his breath caught in his throat.

Now there were only two left.

“R-run...ugh.”

One of them, who was about to turn around, was hit in the back of the head by something and fell—

Fssssshhhh...

The last one, who was trying to turn back, inhaled the colorless and odorless gas that had leaked out without his knowledge and fell.

The passage was quiet, as if nothing had happened.

Click.

After a while.

“...Even if it’s a small place, they were handled so cleanly?” A woman's disbelieving voice was heard.

“Two of them had their heads shattered... Two on their chests. The remaining one was sleeping gas. But they’re all fine?” Another woman's voice was also heard.

“As expected of Dane. He hit them all accurately and knocked them out.” The voice of an excited man.

Finally—

“Let’s move before they wake up.”

It was Dane Sogres’s voice.

Of course, the five who had now passed out could not and would not hear a sound.

I quickly came up with a few hypotheses while setting up the traps.

I wonder who came here?

First, their purpose was clear.

It was the giant mana stone that contained the essence of Saul Hangston.

I guess they were coming for that.

Just looking at it, it was something that any mage—no, anyone in the world would want. This was because it contained all of Saul Hangston's mana from his lifetime, and it was compressed to an incredibly high degree.

Normally, mana stones were not made that stupidly big. They were too inefficient. There was no need to make something so big that it couldn’t even be recharged.

But if the purpose was ‘storage’, that was a different story.

Saul Hangston must have made it himself, so he probably made it to store his mana.

I didn’t know why.

More importantly, who was after it?

“Are they really from the Academy?”

If you think about it logically, it couldn’t be anyone but someone from the Academy. This was the restricted area, and it was difficult to stay inside the restricted area for a certain period of time without any problems unless it was the work of personnel.

But that was only in common cases.

“Isn’t it beyond common sense that this large mana stone containing the essence of Saul Hangston has been discovered?”

It was said that after Saul Hangston's death, all the objects that existed in this laboratory were moved to the Hangston Memorial.

But wasn’t it strange that this mana stone was left behind?

Probably, it wasn’t found.

Or maybe they didn't even know this basement existed.

Or, it couldn't be moved.

Whatever it was, it was just discovered by those poor people who fell into my traps.

Boom, bang. Thump!

I thought I heard some noise for a moment, but now it was quiet.

As I approached and opened the door, Priscilla asked me if that was alright.

“Wouldn’t it be better to go prepared?”

“They must have already passed out.”

"Huh?"

And when I opened the door, the bodies of five people came pouring in.

"Aha..."

Priscilla then looked convinced, and we immediately moved the five unconscious people to one side of the wall and tied their hands and feet. After searching their inventory, I found some pretty good items.

"I found better things than expected."

Ernest, who was in charge of the search, laid out all kinds of objects.

First, six pockets that we assumed to be subspaces and a few notebooks.

This was perfect.

"There are a few crowns and... and so many miscellaneous things?"

I also joined him, looking through the miscellaneous items. Then, I suddenly saw something that looked like a note.

[Make sure to keep two extractors during the essence extraction stage. Add one more person when the extraction progress reaches 60%.]

Essence extraction, huh?

So, this meant that these people were extracting the mana contained in this mana stone.

[If the magic circle is damaged, stop extraction immediately and reinforce it. Check the separately attached magic circle diagram.]

There was also a magic circle diagram written on the note.

I took the diagram and glanced at the magic circle.

Essence extraction, huh?

“Dane. There’s this, too.” Then Ernest handed me a rolled-up piece of parchment.

“It looks like a map.”

When I opened the parchment, a continental map appeared. It was a bit sloppy, but everything that was needed was there, and it showed everything that needed to be shown.

“This alone would be a huge felony.”

Maps were items strictly managed by the imperial family. This is because they were incredibly useful for military intelligence.

If a map like this was discovered, it would at least land you in jail if you get caught.

The question was, what were they planning?

"This..."

I knew right away. These guys...

“Are they part of some kind of organization?” I found a small pill stuck between their teeth. "It's for suicide."

I remembered learning about it from my mother. It was a deadly poison given to a person by assassin organizations or secret organizations to brainwash victims into committing suicide in times of emergency.

I carefully took the poison pills out.

“There’s this, too.”

There was also a note with instructions on it. However, the note wouldn't open.

“It’s magic.”

It was a locking spell to secure a specific item. They varied depending on the caster, but they were generally difficult to solve.

'Generally', that was.

Click.

I figured out the magic flowing through the note and slowly poured my mana into it, tracing the internal flow. The lock opened.

“What did you do?” Leila asked.

“Unlocked it.”

I shrugged my shoulders at Leila's question and opened the notebook.

On the first page, it said:

[For a new world.]

“A new world?”

From this point on, various instructions, things to know, and cautions were written.

[Code of Conduct 1. Security must always be thorough. If the situation is not favorable, the project must be prioritized over life.

Code of Conduct 2. We always move to change the world.

Code of Conduct 3. Do not try to find out the identity of the members of the organization. We are all one, and we are all individuals.

Code of Conduct...]

It was a considerable amount of content, written almost like a manual. These people were moving in an organized manner.

“I guess we should take it.”

It would be evidence.

“Dane, I think we found out something bigger than we thought...” Ernest read the note and his hands trembled.

Who would have known? We arrived with the intention of going on a treasure hunt because we thought there was something to find, but we ended up confirming the existence of a secret organization.

Even this kind of mana stone...

"Hmm..."

The evidence was shocking.

“Dane. It looks like an insider helped them.”

“Look.”

What Leila handed over was another note.

[Academy 34.58 North Latitude

The door will open when you give the signal.]

Ernest quickly figured out where latitude 34.58 was.

“It’s the material transport passage at the back door.”

Material transport passage. That meant these people came in through there. Rather than climbing over a wall or digging the ground, they used a passageway...

“I guess that means there is someone inside who helped,” Priscilla guessed.

As far as I knew, access to the Academy was controlled quite strictly, so if you managed to get through...

“There is clearly a problem.”

To summarize: A secret organization was seeking to extract the essence of Saul Hangston, and they had collaborators within the Academy.

The key was these two things.

“What are we going to do with this?”

Every organization had a purpose for which it was formed.

I wasn’t sure what this organization’s purpose was, but if they were trying to use this massive mana stone that contained Saul Hangston’s essence, it couldn’t be for an ordinary purpose.

“Further investigation is needed.”

First, we searched through the unconscious people’s bodies, collecting all of the evidence into our subspace.

Before that, I also checked in advance to see if there were any tracking spells or devices.

“What about these people, Dane?”

Now all that was left was to deal with these people.

I answered Ernest's question simply, “We need to restrict their mana so that they can’t move and call someone.”

“Th-then what about us?”

“We have to run before that.”

Reports had to be made anonymously. If we all got involved by mistake, things would get troublesome.

"Things have gotten a bit out of hand."

“A secret organization... I really couldn’t have imagined it.”

Ernest was disappointed that the exploration wasn't what he had expected and bewildered by the discovery of things he had never imagined.

But my thoughts were a little different.

I looked at the magic circle once. It was a little difficult, but it wasn’t to the point where I couldn’t restore it or make it unusable.

It also seemed that the magic circle 'acceleration' would be possible.

What if my Ancient Mana was added to that?

“It would be a shame to just go back like this, right?” I said to the three of them. “Anyway, no one knew that this was here, only they knew. But these people are intruders, right?”

Everyone had a look of disbelief on their faces.

I looked at the mana stone with a grin.

“So, let’s take this mana stone.”
