Chapter 64 - Former Chosen One (4)

“For now, let’s not tell anyone of today’s events,” Theo told Evelyn.

The secret techniques of the Wind Baron, Theo’s Body Cleansing Purification, and the oath of loyalty. None of them would be of benefit to them if news got out.

“Yes, I understand. It wouldn’t be good for the morale of the unit to learn of this.”

“Yes. Also, while we’re with the unit, you should treat me more lax. Don’t be so formal with me.”

“What? But how could I…?!”

“You’re my superior officer in the unit, and I’m your subordinate. It’s only natural.”

“But still…”

“Don’t worry. I’ll catch up to you soon.” Theo meant that he intended to acquire a promotion no matter what it took.

“Are you sure you can, sir?”

“You’re smiling. What? You think I can’t do it?”

“It won’t be easy.”

“I still need to do it. I told you. I’m going to be the commander of the White-Armored Dragon Cavalry in five years.”

“......”

“That wasn’t an empty declaration.”

“Yes. I understand, sir.”

“That’s why…” Theo said while looking Evelyn directly in the eyes, “Please stop referring to me so formally, Senior Officer Evelyn.”

Theo and Evelyn cleaned up the area before returning to their headquarters.

Sunset was approaching.

“Ahaha! Theo, you ended up being last! When you’re a newbie, you need to chop-chop. You can’t be such a slowpoke already!” Hulkus boasted, this being the first thing he’d ever beaten Theo in.

Hulkus and Erika had finished their aptitude test a good while ago.

‘Theo should now recognize my true value!’ Hulkus was thinking while approaching Theo.

Theo had just landed on the ground.

“H-huh…?” Hulkus froze involuntarily.

‘It’s massive…!’ thought Hulkus.

The wyvern that Theo brought back was far larger than his new partner.

Hulkus’s wyvern was among the larger Optirexes, yet Theo’s wyvern made his look small in comparison.

The large, bearish figure slumped down.

Grrr!

Suddenly, Hulkus’s partner, ‘Spatium’, bared their fangs at Umbra.

“What’s wrong with you?” Hulkus was shocked by his docile partner acting up.

Meanwhile…

“Wh-what the?”

“Is that… Umbra?”

“What? He picked Umbra as his partner? That disobedient brat?”

“No way!”

“How did he do that?”

Noticing Umbra, the members of the cavalry were in an uproar. All of them knew Umbra’s tragic backstory and the fact that Umbra wouldn’t select a partner, which worried them further.

Because of this, they hadn’t expected their newest recruit to be the one to tame Umbra.

“I guess that’s the Millennium's Greatest Prodigy for ya. Damn, to think even Umbra was picky about talent. What am I doing with my life…?”

The cavalry members all stared at Theo and Umbra. They were gossiping, wondering if maybe Theo had somehow failed the aptitude test because he was taking so long. This, however, completely silenced all of that.

While that was going on, Theo and Evelyn went up to Julius.

“I, High-rank swordsman Evelyn Nerevil, along with Trainee Swordsman Theo Ragnar, have returned from the aptitude test. He has passed the test, and his partner has been designated as Umbra from Nest #3.”

“Good work, both of you. It seems our little troublemaker has finally found himself a partner.”

Evelyn nodded to Julius’s words, “Sir Th—uh, Theo and Umbra seem highly compatible.”

“Oho. Is that so?” Julius spoke with a spark in his eyes while he stroked his chin.

The highest scorer of the Awakening Ceremony and the Nest of White Dragons’s troublemaker. This duo would undoubtedly become a great asset to the White-Armored Dragon Cavalry, expanding the variety of tactics they could deploy.

“This will make platoon assignments easier,” Julius said while smirking at Evelyn. He seemed to have had an idea.

Flinch!

Evelyn couldn’t help but straighten up her posture.

‘What is he planning on now…?’ she wondered.

She knew very well that whenever Julius smiled like that, an incident soon followed. That was why she tried to restrain him, but…

“Alright, it’s getting late, so let’s call it here for today! I will announce the platoon assignments tomorrow. Everyone, you’re dismissed!”

“Thank you for your hard work, sir!” everyone shouted back in unison.

“Oh, and go easy on the booze. I don’t think I have to warn you about what will happen if I hear that one of you is struggling with a hangover… right?” Julius glared.

“Yes, sir!”

“We will make sure that doesn’t happen, sir!”

“You all sure talk a big game. But seriously, dismissed!”

“See you tomorrow, sir!”

“Have a good night, commander!”

Just like that, the busy day of the nomination ceremony and aptitude test was finally coming to a close.

Naturally, after the aptitude test was the new recruit welcoming party.

Theo was standing around awkwardly in the unfamiliar environment.

“Hey! Since you’re officially my junior now, I can address you casually, right?” Selford approached Theo, holding a mug of beer.

Theo let out a small laugh. He thought, ‘Wasn’t he already being casual even before the aptitude test?’

Of course, that was partly because Erika and Hulkus had been with Theo.

Selford’s gaze was fixed on Theo.

“Of course, sir. While I’m here, my role as a member of the cavalry supersedes my status as a succession heir,” Theo answered.

“Hahah! You’re so easygoing. I like that. See, Erin! He agrees that I don’t need to speak so formally!”

Erin, who was standing along with their other comrades, let out a deep sigh and shook her head to Selford’s loud shout.

“So, how in the world did you get Umbra to be your partner? Everyone is super curious.”

“So, what happened was…”

Theo went on to explain what happened with Umbra with a bit of embellishment while leaving out the details with the Wind Baron.

Curious about the story, the other cavalry members started slowly gathering one by one. By the end, everyone was in awe of Theo’s tale.

“Oh my!”

“To think such a thing happened…!”

“Is that so?”

Sob sob! That’s so sad…!”

In a drunken fervor, some couldn’t hold back their tears.

While observing these people, Theo could read what kind of place the White-Armored Dragon Cavalry was.

‘I knew that they were more lax compared to the other units, but they’re also all really earnest with their emotions,’ Theo noted.

Due to the Rule of the Strong dominating the Ragnar Clan, people were normally highly calculative, as your abilities entirely dominated your status and position.

While there was clearly a hierarchy within the White-Armored Dragon Cavalry, there didn’t seem to be the kind of in-fighting that was commonly seen elsewhere.

‘I guess that’s due to Commander Julius’s philosophy that everyone should treat each other like family.’

Thanks to that, Theo, Erika, and Hulkus didn’t have to be on guard for being newbies. Even though the aptitude test had just finished, they were able to quickly mix into the group.

Once the welcoming party was over, Theo gave his goodbyes and started making his way back to the Camelia Palace.

The moon was high above in the night sky.

‘My own platoon…’ Theo stopped in his tracks and stared up at the moon.

Feelings that were hard to verbalize filled his heart. It was a fulfillment that he had never felt in his previous life. His head was full of the fact that his current life was highly different from his previous one.

“Why are you being so melancholic? You didn’t even have a drop of booze.”

The sudden voice made Theo turn his head to look behind him.

Hulkus and Erika approached him with an unpleasant expression on their faces.

“Did you guys not head back to the dormitory?” Theo asked.

Erika smirked while shaking a can of beer in her hand, “Don’t you think it’s a pity to end after just one round on a day like today?”

Theo couldn’t help but smirk back at her response. This sibling duo… they were always pleasant company, just like his comrades at Training Ground #4.

“In that case, there’s a place I know well. Do you wanna come with?”

“Oho! I’ll never say no to a place where the young master is a regular.”

“Nice. But I am confiscating this,” Theo said while snatching the beer can out of Erika’s hand.

Erika responded in anger, “Hey! What’s the deal?!”

“You seem to have forgotten, but we’re minors.”

“Damn, you straight-laced fogey! Don’t you know that it’s considered fine once one completes the Awakening Ceremony?”

“Just because they let it slide when one drinks after the Awakening Ceremony doesn’t actually mean that it is okay for us to drink while underage.”

Erika scowled at Theo’s lecturing.

“But if you don’t like that, you can stay out,” Theo taunted.

“Alright, fine! So, where are we going anyways?” Erika grumbled while following Theo.

Hulkus was in awe. Erika somehow always ended up being the one dragged by the reins whenever it came to Theo.

The place that Theo arrived at was the hangout pub of Training Ground #4.

“Oh! He’s finally here!”

“Everyone, gather up! The young master has returned!”

“What? Where?”

“Ahahaha! Welcome back, young master. We’ve all been dying to hear about your heroic adventures!”

Erika and Hulkus were stunned to see the rowdy crowd inside. Why were there so many people?

But Theo looked unfazed, casually greeting them all. He then signaled for Erika and Hulkus to come in already.

Having entered timidly, Hulkus and Erika saw that Remmington and Ray were already there.

“Aren’t you quite late, sir?” Remington greeted Theo.

“Yeah. The aptitude test took a while. I’m glad to see you’re here too, Ray.”

“Y-yeah…”

Ray, unaccustomed to being in a large social gathering, had a rosy nose. She was completely different from the rumored image of the expressionless Frost Sword.

Remington explained while laughing, “I noticed her just lingering nearby, unable to come in, so I dragged her in with me.”

“Th-that was not what happened!”

“Alright. Then let’s say you came in on your own after I invited you.”

“You’re teasing me right now, aren’t you?” Ray glared.

Remington only chuckled in response.

Erika and Hulkus walked up behind Theo. With the two giant siblings inside, the pub seemed even more crowded.

“What’s going on here? Why are Goody-two-shoes and Ice Pop here?”

“What do you think? We’re having an afterparty for the Awakening Ceremony. Anyway, would you like a drink? They have good whiskey here,” Remington shrugged while handing Erika a glass.

Erika’s face brightened up. “Oho. I thought you were just a goody-two-shoes, but you do know how to have fun.”

“Can you knock it off with the ‘goody-two-shoes’?”

“Then how about not-so-straight-laced-two-shoes?”

“…So being rid of two-shoes is out of the question.”

“Ufufu. It’s no fun if nicknames change so easily.”

As Erika reached for the glass of whisky, someone stopped her.

It was Theo.

“Huh?”

“No drinking for minors.”

“Come on. I should at least be able to have this. Your friend is the one giving it to me,” Erika protested.

“That’s still a no. You’re welcome to leave if you don’t like it.”

“Ahhhh! You’re a real fogey, you know that?”

“Pfft! So is Young Master Theo’s nickname now fogey?” Remmy chuckled.

“Remmy, the same to you,” said Theo.

“What?’

“I’m confiscating this.”

“N-no, Young Master Theo! You should be more flexible on days like today…!” Remington despaired, having also lost his whisky while mocking Erika.

Of course, their protests worked none whatsoever against Theo.

“I don’t get why they like to drink such nasty-tasting drinks. Orange juice is so much better,” Hulkus said while shaking his head.

In a hard juxtaposition of his imposing figure, he sat next to them while sipping a glass of children’s orange juice through a straw.

“I think it’s time, Young Master Theo!”

“What all happened during the exams?”

“All the high-rankers of the ceremony are here, so please tell us now!”

The members of Training Ground #4 had surrounded Theo, Remmy, Ray, Hulkus, and Erika completely, looking at them with bright, shining eyes.

Ray was fidgeting anxiously, but she thought, ‘…This is fun.’

She didn’t want to leave.

To Ray who was always alone, this was like a new world. Because she was always riddled with illness, this was the first time she had ever hung out with people. However, after encountering Theo and meeting more and more people, a desire sparked within her.

‘I want to hang out with people.’

She wanted to become their friend.
