Chapter 112 - Floating Archipelago (2)

Clunk! Clunk!

Cannon ports thunked open across the ship, revealing the ship’s firepower. They were the latest model of magic cannons purchased from the magic tower for a fortune.

Boom! Rumble! Boom!

Every time the cannons roared a shot, the ship shook violently as the blast splashed a light drizzle across the vicinity.

“Attention dear passengers. There has been a marine predator sighting in the area. We would like to request that passengers follow the ship attendants' instructions and return to your rooms…”

Boom! Ka-boom!

The firing of the cannons was so loud that the emergency announcement could barely be heard. The mercenaries that stood weary of Theo quickly jumped to action. They all looked as if this wasn’t their first rodeo.

‘I heard that marine predator appearances have been on the rise. I guess the rumors are true.’

Theo imbued his eyes with divinity as he carefully observed the high-rank mercenaries.

“None of the cannons are hitting! Damn conning mages! They charged us an arm and a leg for those, yet they have the accuracy of a blind mouse!” The dog beastman grumbled as he stuck downward with a spear taller than himself.

A monster that was attempting to climb onto the deck was knocked back down into the water.

“We really need to request that Sir Antonio stop trading with them,” the gunslinger chimed in, pulling out parts from his bag.

The gunslinger quickly assembled a large machine gun and aimed its sights at the water, pulling the trigger.

Ra-Ta-Ta-Ta-Ta—

The waters near the ship were tainted red as marine predators of various sizes, both small and large, were wounded.

“Stop yapping and corral them together already! I can’t get proper hits in as things are!” The flame mage, the only one in the merc party that Theo was really interested in, yelled while mumbling around the cigarette in his mouth.

He snapped his fingers, firing off an explosive barrage with the magic circles on his gloves. The fire spell wasn’t very effective against the monsters underwater, but it dealt a good blow against the monsters climbing onto the ship.

The rest of the mercenaries, all kitted out with a variety of different equipment, hacked and slashed away the monsters with their own specialties. A few even demonstrated a passable level of aura.

Though they were intimidated by Selford and Erin, these guys weren’t absolute nobodies either. Some could even be classified as ‘special-rank’.

Boom! Boom!

「Theo! How long are we going to just stand here?」 Selford asked.

「Give us an order already,」 Erin goaded Theo to make a call.

Both of them continued to stand guard next to Theo, waiting for him to make a decision.

‘Found it,’ Theo smiled, having found the guy he was searching for amidst the mercenaries.

He had found someone with a similar energy to Slo Geng.

Theo was glad he hadn’t notified the crew of the incoming marine predators. After all, it was him who called them here in the first place.

After analyzing the Sea King’s magic power, he created a similar magical scent to lure these monsters in.

「Please only stop the monsters from harming ordinary civilians. I will be acting on my own,」 Theo requested.

「I see what you’re planning. Alright,」 Selford agreed.

「We’ll refrain from revealing our full abilities,」 Erin chimed in.

Fwoosh—!

Selford and Erin launched their aura blades into the air, blowing the heads off the sea monsters.

“Aura Blades? The aura swordsmen have joined the fight!”

“We can stop them! Keep up the pressure!”

Both the ship crew and the mercenaries looked reinvigorated. Though terrifying as enemies, Selford and Erin made great, reliable allies.

Meanwhile, Theo ran in the opposite direction from the two.

«God of Tempest - Gale Walk»

“Damn it! I was really praying that it wouldn’t be a Sea Serpent!” one of the crewmen shouted.

Roooooooar!

A Sea Serpent dozens of meters long surfaced above the water, coiling its body around the ship.

Crunch—

Various parts of the ship started breaking. The crew furiously fired off the cannons to shake the serpent off, but the cannonballs simply bounced off the body of the serpent, damaging the deck instead.

The sea serpent was showing that it was deserving of its classification as one of the most powerful marine predators and demonic fiends. There were reports that it had recently destroyed two ships, and it was certainly deserving of its infamy.

“Cast «Flame Lightning» already!”

“I’m already on it! You’re distracting me, so stop nagging!” Grey Geng, the flame mage, continued his incantation while clenching his teeth.

‘I should be roughing up and questioning that Lund guy, not dealing with this nonsense!’ Grey thought to himself.

Grey’s real identity was that of a Class-2 member of the Black Skull. Normally, he pretended to be Antonio’s guard. However, when necessary, he was deployed by the Spinola Family to gather important intel.

A moment ago, he ended up overhearing the conversation between Theo and his company. The existence of the Sea King was top-secret, not just between the 3 Maritime Families but also the Black Skull.

The fact that “Lund” had come to find the Sea King suggested to Grey that Lund might have some sort of connection to the Troivans.

Grey had intended to show off his true skills to capture Lund alive, but the ship got attacked by marine predators at the worst possible moment.

‘Taking care of these monsters takes priority…!’ thought Grey.

「You’re a Black Skull, aren’t you?」

Grey’s thoughts were suddenly interrupted. He quickly turned his head toward the source of the voice, but something suddenly snatched him—quickly and stealthily.

“Wait! Grey is gone!”

“What? But he was just here!”

“Shit! Did a marine predator get him? Quick! Find him before he’s dragged underwater!”

The mercenaries all scrambled off in search of their friend, but Grey was tied up, hanging upside down within the crow’s nest of the ship.

‘Who is this bastard?!’ Grey wondered, his heart thumping like crazy.

Theo looked at Grey, who was gagged, with a bone-chilling smile. Between mentioning the Sea King and knowing his identity as a Black Skull, Grey couldn’t get a read on Theo at all.

“You know what this is, don’t you?” Theo magically pulled out a sword from thin air.

“Mmph! Mm-mmph!”

“I knew you’d recognize it right away.”

Grey squirmed, trying to set himself free, but he couldn’t escape from Theo’s vise grip.

What had riled him up was none other than Balmung, the treasure of his homeland that he and his comrades had been desperately trying to get back. However, they were under the assumption that it was within the possession of the Troivan Clan.

‘How does he have that…?!’ Grey was confused.

“The Troivan Clan has been blackmailing you with this, haven’t they? Promising to return it and help put the Sea King back to sleep if you listen to them. Am I wrong?”

“......” Grey tried to seem as neutral as possible.

However, Theo didn’t miss the momentary shift in his expression, ‘I knew it. The Troivans have been controlling the Maritime Alliance by pretending to have Balmung in their possession.’

Theo had a feeling that if they held Balmung ransom in the previous timeline, they might have attempted something similar once again.

And he was right on the money.

With this, it should be possible to break the link between the Maritime Alliance and the Troivan Clan.

“In exchange for returning this, I’d like to talk to your boss. Can you arrange a meeting for me?”

Grey winced. His eyes closed, and he was no longer putting up a resistance. He would rather die than go along with this scheme.

“I don’t blame you for being suspicious of me. After all, I am a stranger requesting a meeting by force. I bet this seems like another scheme of the Troivans. Right?”

“......”

“I guess I should first prove that I have no relations to the Troivan Clan whatsoever.”

Theo let go of his grip on Grey and freed him from his restraints.

Thud!

“What is the meaning of this…?” Despite having regained his bodily autonomy, he scowled at Theo.

Theo smirked, “I told you. I’ll prove that I’m unrelated to the Troivans. But that’s difficult at the moment, so I’ll show you something else.”

“......?”

“I’ll show you that you absolutely need me.”

Grey was confused, but before he could ask, Theo had already leaped toward the ocean.

Whoosh—

“Umbra!”

From the shadow of the sea serpent reflected in the water, Umbra popped up like a shark and bit into the body of the serpent.

Chomp!

Hissss—

Despite having scales hard enough to deflect cannonballs, it was not enough to stop Umbra’s bite. The sea serpent started thrashing in retaliation, but unphased, Umbra tried to pull it into the water.

Kiiiiegh!

Unable to hold their ground, the sea serpent was dragged into the sea.

“We’ve escaped the sea serpent’s grasp!”

“What just happened? It looked like it was dragged away by something.”

“Who cares why? What matters is that we can shoot our cannons again!”

“Right! Cannons, focus fire on the enemies.”

Boom! Ka-boom!

As the smaller monsters were blasted to smithereens, Theo dove underwater.

Splash!

‘He actually jumped out?’ Grey watched from the crow’s nest in shock.

“I’ll show you guys that you absolutely need me.” Theo’s words echoed inside Grey’s mind.

At the same time, he was nervous that the Balmung they had finally found again would sink into the depths of the ocean.

“The sea serpent! We need to prioritize killing the sea serpent!” Grey screamed at the top of his lungs, but his pleas went unheard over the booming of the cannons.

Meanwhile, Theo spectated underwater the struggle between Umbra and the sea serpent.

The sea serpent coiled its entire body around Umbra as payback for the wound it had suffered, but Umbra refused to relent, biting down even harder into the serpent’s flesh.

It was a tight fight where both parties refused to give away even an inch.

But Theo was worried that Umbra might lose at this rate. Not only was the ocean the domain of the sea serpent, but Umbra wasn’t capable of breathing underwater.

Fwoosh!

Fwip! Fwip! Fwip! Fwip!

Theo performed the «God of Tempest» to quickly approach the sea serpent while also drawing out his Death-bits.

From each of the four daggers, a lightning dragon roared.

By chaining the «Heat Link Routine», the powered-up lightning dragons heated up even hotter, causing the water around them to boil.

Boom! Boom! Boom! Boom!

All of the lightning dragons hit the sea serpent with full force. Theo had imbued extra power into this attack to free Umbra from the serpent’s coil.

The electric energy electrocuted the serpent, even scorching its wound and causing internal damage.

Grrroar…!

[Activating ‘Skill: Wyvern Taming’ to charm the sea serpent.]

Theo got up close to the serpent and activated his skill, which specialized in taming dragon-type creatures.

[The high resistance of the sea serpent caused the skill to fail.]

[Re-activating the skill.]

[The high resistance of the sea serpent caused the skill to fail.]

[Re-activating the skill.]

……

[Activating ‘Skill: Hatchling Synchro’ to weaken the mental barrier of the sea serpent.]

Within a few seconds, Theo activated his skills countless times. And in the end, he was able to achieve the desired result.

[You have successfully degraded a portion of the sea serpent’s mental barrier.]

[Reading a portion of the sea serpent’s memories.]

Fwooo!

A number of different sceneries quickly flashed by Theo’s eyes until he eventually reached an abyssal plain that could only be reached by diving deep into a submarine canyon.

There lay a massive, extremely long ancient dragon shifting around in pain.

Right away, Theo could tell this was the Sea King, mentioned by Lodbrok.

The dominating presence and mana gust exuded by the Sea King was no joke. Every time it churned, it stimulated the mantle, causing underwater volcanic eruptions as well as continental earthquakes.

‘Father…’ the sea serpent looked at the Sea King with saddened eyes.

As a long-time child and servant of the Sea King, the only desire held by the sea serpent was to ease the Sea King’s pain.

‘Please wait a little longer. I will find someone who can help you,’ the serpent thought.

The sea serpent then gathered the marine predators under him, heading outside the abyssal plain. It had heard that the race of creatures known as humans knew how to wield a mystical force called magic. Perhaps their magic would be able to ease the Sea King’s pain.

‘I was dead wrong,’ Theo finally realized his mistake.

The sea serpent and the marine predators had no intention of harming humans. Their actions were merely retaliation due to the humans, whom they feared, having attacked them first.

They were trying to communicate with the humans, though they failed every time.

“Human…”

Theo finally returned back to the present, locking eyes with the pained sea serpent.

“Unlike the other humans, I sense a scent similar to Father on you. Can you help my father?” the sea serpent pleaded.

Theo nodded his head.

“I shall trust you,” said the serpent.

Then, a series of messages rang out.

Ding! Ding!

[The creature has been successfully charmed.]

[You have tamed the sea serpent.]

[Please give it a name.]

‘Pontus,’ thought Theo.

It was an ancient word meaning the sea.

[The ‘Sea Serpent: Pontus’ bows their head to their new master.]
