Chapter 510
Simon dashed toward the shattered master of the dungeon.
Even with her reason clouded in the carnage, Nirthi seemed to realize she had to stop him. She forced her unstable, massive body forward, charging after Simon.
'!'
In an instant, the surroundings darkened as a massive, screaming chimera arm came crashing down.
[Not a chance!]
Just then, Prince leaped into the air, drawing his fist back to once again…
Pooooooooooooow!
The blow landed cleanly on Nirthi's chest. With a deafening explosion, its massive form was slammed into the floor.
'Nice one, Prince!'
With the time Prince had bought, Simon safely reached the master of the dungeon.
The master of the dungeon was just as immortal as the monsters it led, but due to Akemus' curse, it still wasn't regenerating. Simon couldn't help but admire Akemus' performance.
Raising the Greatsword of Destruction high, Simon drove it down into the master of the dungeon's chest.
With a nasty squelch, the greatsword pierced straight through.
'Karl!'
Simon opened his eyes wide.
'I'm counting on you!'
Pssshhh…
From the greatsword emerged an eerie, dog-like figure. It pounced onto the master of the dungeon, sinking its teeth into any flesh it could find purchase on before devouring it bit by bit.
And with every bit that was consumed, the Greatsword of Destruction glowed brighter in a brilliant green.
As Simon focused on absorbing the master of the dungeon with his greatsword, Prince and Kajann relentlessly kept Nirthi's attention on them.
Slam!
Prince took a direct hit from one of Nirthi's fists and was sent crashing into a wall. The impact was enough to force him out of the body, a normal zombie laying motionless in the solid rock.
{Kajann Original - Fang}
Kajann on the other hand leaped into the air, arching back so far he looked like a crescent moon before slashing downward with both arms. Deep claw marks tore across the chimera's flesh.
Yet Nirthi didn't even flinch, instead sweeping out with one of her legs and kicking Kajann away.
[There is no limit to my power!]
Nirthi approached, towering over them all, more chimera than human.
[No matter how hard you struggle, you will never defeat me in this dungeon!]
"That may be true…"
Shiing!
At last, with Karl's power, Simon finished absorbing the master of the dungeon. Simon pointed his greatsword downward.
"So I'm getting rid of your home-field advantage first."
Simon drove the greatsword into the dungeon floor.
Nerve-like stems, reminiscent of veins, emerged from the floor, centered around Simon's greatsword.
Karl's second power.
The power that the mystery group known as 'The Association' had desperately sought out.
It was the ability to consume the master of a dungeon and use their new authority to seize control of the dungeon.
————!
An overwhelming flood of data surged into Simon's mind.
Simon clutched his forehead, staggering as he endured the influx of information. It felt similar to the first time he had used Compellonia.
Data beyond human-defined symbols or language. Yet he could understand it. After all, the power was all his.
Gripping his greatsword tightly, Simon took a deep breath. Then, he willingly jumped into the unknown sea.
He swam through the data, tracing the veins of knowledge and information, before, at last, he found it.
'Immortality.'
His mind burned hot.
'I need to erase this function from my dungeon completely.'
With that thought, he severed the 'vein' that corresponded to immortality.
[A-Ahhhhhhhhhhh!]
The effect was immediate.
As Simon opened his eyes, the chimeras that made up Nirthi's body crumbled into dust, scattering into the air.
They were vanishing, as if they were always meant to.
Simon finally pulled his greatsword from the floor, forming a tired smile.
"…It's hard to believe even seeing it with my own eyes."
Muttered Kajann, left dumbfounded after coming to protect Simon.
"What did you do, Simon?"
"It's simple. I took control of this dungeon using Karl's power and removed the power of immortality from it."
Simon lifted his head.
"I'm sure she was able to create such extreme chimeras because they all possessed the power of immortality. I figured it would be simple if I just nullified that."
The entire battlefield was soon filled with swirling dust and fragments of skin.
Before long, every last chimera had disappeared, leaving only Nirthi, desperately flailing her arm, trying to grasp the dust.
Her right arm was once again a stump after being slashed through by the Greatsword of Destruction, and one of her legs had been reduced to a mangled mess.
A pitiful end for the chief researcher of The Association, going from an enormous monstrosity to a small, broken girl.
"Admit it, Nirthi."
Step… Step…
Simon put his greatsword over his shoulder and walked toward her.
"You've lost."
Her unfocused eyes slowly moved to Simon.
She had lost all will to fight.
"I just wanted everyone to know…"
She muttered vacantly.
"Tarados, which cast me into the abyss. This disgusting world, filled only with contempt. The countless people who never reached out a hand. I wanted them to feel even a fraction, just one ten-thousandth of the pain I suffered."
Her eyes looked up to meet Simon's.
"Are you here to preach to me, student council president of Kizen?"
Simon closed his eyes and rubbed his neck.
"I'm not here to preach. But the moment your rage lost its way and spiraled out of control, this was inevitable. If not from me, then someone else."
"…"
"The ones who, blinded by rage, killed your parents, and you, who turned Tarados into a nightmare in your own rage."
It wasn't anger, no. His voice simply deepened: darkened.
"How different are you from them?"
Her eyes became sharp for a moment.
Then, her eyelids trembled slightly before a resigned smile crept onto her lips.
"Well…"
Pssshhh…
She herself began to disintegrate.
The power of immortality.
It seemed she hadn't just used it upon her test subjects, but she also infused the power of immortality into her own body as well.
And if she was disappearing now, there was only one reason for that.
Her life had long since run out, and the immortality was the only thing keeping her intact.
"Confess to me one last thing, Nirthi."
Said Simon as he crouched down.
"If even the slightest shred of guilt remains in you as a human being, then tell me about the horrific plan The Association was preparing."
She smirked.
And then…
She silently moved her lips, whispering something.
Pssshhh…
Soon, she completely disintegrated, scattering away to join the piles of dust.

After Simon took control of the dungeon, the entire immortal army that covered every inch of the dungeon disappeared.
The people Serene had rescued, along with the test subjects who had not yet turned into undead, were all able to escape from the prison.
However, they couldn't escape the dungeon just yet.
[Krrrruuoough!]
An Ancient Undead of the Magnus Legion, Alahze, and the massive undead under his command were still engaged in battle outside the dungeon.
The military camps outside the dungeon were burning, and the ground was cracked and torn open as if an earthquake had struck.
The Ganes Guild and the soldiers fighting Alahze were mostly incapacitated. At this point, the Gold Mine Dungeon under Simon's control was the safer place.
[Lorain Archbold. Beyond calculation. Allied forces' casualties. Devastating.]
Muttered Alahze.
[Highest power of Fifth Legion. Gremores. Eliminated eight out of ten alone.]
Around Alahze stood only the legs of giants. They had been cleanly cut in half, left kneeling on the ground.
Only two gremores remained.
[Despite complications. Commencing operation. Proceeding with Karl's retrieval.]
Thud! Thud! Thud!
The two remaining gremores marched past the military camps, heading toward the Gold Mine Dungeon.
"They're coming! We need to get out of here!"
"Everyone, move up to the higher floors!"
The imprisoned villagers, along with the soldiers and bandits who had survived the battle against the Fifth Legion, were hastily running into the Gold Mine Dungeon. It was the same for Lorain and General Amin.
"Pant, pant."
Holding a red dagger, Lorain was gasping for breath.
'…How stupid of me. I couldn't pace myself because I had to protect everyone as I fought.'
She lifted her head, panting. Supporting her from the side, Amin earnestly said,
"Young lady Lorain, you must retreat to the upper floors now!"
"No, I can still fight! If those things get through, the people will…!"
Flutter…
Just then, a feather drifted down from the ceiling and landed on Lorain's shoulder.
[Retreat. Simon said he'll handle this himself.]
Lorain's face was a mixture of surprise and doubt.
"Simon? He shouldn't have any strength left after the battle with Nirthi."
[Fufu. I'm sure he has a plan.]
Thud! Thud!
At last, the two massive gremores, accompanied by Alahze, pushed into the rift in space and stepped into the Gold Nine Dungeon.
There was no one in sight.
[Karl the demonic beast of plague. Searching. Three floors down. Commence search.]
"It's been a while, Fifth Legion."
It was then. From the darkness of the dungeon, a boy wearing Pier's skull and holding a greatsword walked toward them.
Alahze's eyes gleamed.
[Commander of the Seventh Legion, Simon Polentia.]
"You're the Ancient Undead of the Fifth Legion, right? Are you perhaps looking for Karl?"
Simon raised his greatsword.
"He's right here."
A green light shimmered on the greatsword, and smoke came out, forming the shape of a hound.
The face of Alahze, riding on a gremore's shoulder, stiffened coldly.
[Retrieval failed. Ancient Undead Karl confirmed destroyed. Mission failure.]
"You catch on quick."
Simon lowered his greatsword and smiled.
"Then, will you back off now?"
[Altering mission at Alahze's own judgment.]
A menacing jet-black erupted from both the massive undead gremores.
[Simon Polentia. Capturing. Commencing operation to retrieve all Ancient Undead of the Seventh Legion. Including Karl.]
The gremores began to march forward, dragging their massive bodies forward with every heaving step.
Simon muttered, "I knew it," as he drove his greatsword into the floor.
"You're making a mistake."
Swaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!
As the greatsword pierced the dungeon floor, nerve-like veins shot out, crawling up the walls and stretching all the way to the ceiling.
"Because this place is my house now."
Rrrrrrrumble!
Suddenly, the dungeon's floors and walls twisted and warped like a shifting labyrinth. The gremores abruptly stopped their advance.
"Capture them."
As Simon stretched out his arm, the dungeon's walls and floors surged up, coiling around the gremores like massive serpents.
[Recalibrating.]
Simon clenched his fist.
"I can use every function of this dungeon."
Crrrunch! Crrrrrrunch!
The warped space of the dungeon began tightening around the gremores. And from the walls, dungeon monsters appeared, biting and tearing into their flesh.
It was as if the entire dungeon itself was trying to kill the intruders.
[Impossible. This is an impossible phenomenon.]
Shouted Alahze.
"Nothing is impossible, Ancient Undead."
With that, Simon clenched his fist.
Blurrrt!
Bfffsh!
The two gremores burst apart, reduced to a red paste. As Simon opened his hand, what was once undead dripped down in thick, meaty juice.
[Alahze. Retreating.]
Alahze, who had just been sitting on a gremore's shoulder, attempted to escape immediately, but Simon was faster.
The dungeon's ceiling came down, wrapping around Alahze and sealing him within what resembled a prison.
"You're a cautious one, huh? This isn't your real body. It's a clone, right?"
Rrrrrrumble!
Simon tapped the floor twice with his foot, and then a section of the dungeon floor rose like a pillar, stopping in front of Alahze's prison.
"Tell your Commander—Magnus."
Simon leaned forward toward Alahze and smiled.
"Instead of meddling in other people's affairs like this, let's have a real battle sometime soon, Legions again Legion."
The prison collapsed when Simon snapped his fingers, shattering Alahze's clone.
Now that he had gained the power of Karl, there was nothing left to fear.
