Chapter 504
"I mean, isn't it only right?"
Under the soft moonlight that faintly illuminated the surroundings, Lorain smiled gently.
"You can't freely use your power as a Commander power at school, either, but you still managed to earn the top spot at Kizen purely with your own strength. I think that's amazing."
Simon scratched his cheek awkwardly.
"…Thanks. But aren't our situations just way too different? I only started learning dark magic after becoming a Commander, but you were suddenly forbidden from using the power you've always been good at."
"Does that really matter?"
Answering her own question with her lack of care, she turned her head to look at the night sky.
"The moon is beautiful."
"…"
Simon looked at her.
'It's harsh for Lorain, but I don't think Lady Nefthis' decision was wrong. If she manages to endure these restrictions for the next two years…'
Having constantly felt that everything he learned at Kizen contributed to his strength as a Commander, Simon was certain.
She would become a far stronger and more remarkable necromancer than she was now.
This second year of school would be the biggest turning point in her life.
"Well, shall we go now?"
The three buckets they had placed in the underground stream were all overflowing.
Lorain stood up, bucket in hand. Simon also grabbed one of the buckets with his right hand and reached for the second with his left.
Tap.
Lorain's pearly white hand touched against the back of Simon's. They both pulled away at the same time.
"…"
"…"
An awkward silence lingered between them beneath the moonlight.
Lorain was the first to break it.
"I'll carry it."
"N-No, I can carry two!"
After quarreling over who would carry the third bucket, they eventually decided to just carry it together.
"Ready, set…"
"Heave ho!"
The boy and the girl walked back toward the tent, the bounty of their adventure in hand.
As they walked, enjoying the pleasant night breeze, Lorain suddenly laughed.
"Aren't we being too dumb? We could've just had the skeletons do it."
"That was not very necromancer-like of us."
They continued walking while having a friendly chat.
And so, they arrived at the tent. Just as they were about to start a fire and prepare the meal, they noticed the area around them seemed unusually noisy.
"I wonder if something happened…"
Pondered Simon. Lorain glanced at the blood droplets on the ground and said,
"I hear voices coming from our tent. Let's go check it out."
* * *
Simon and Lorain rushed into the tent.
"What's going on?"
Serene, Kajann, Lisa, and the coachman were there.
And so was an unfamiliar figure.
He was bleeding heavily, struggling to catch his breath.
Lisa held onto him and shouted,
"Big bro, I said you're not supposed to move! Your wounds will open up!"
'Big bro?'
Simon's eyes widened.
'This man must be the client who sent me the request asking for help!'
Precariously gasping for breath, the man looked at Simon.
"A-Are you… S-Simon Polentia…?"
"Yes, that's me."
The man struggled to stand.
When he did manage to get onto his feet, he was about the same height as Simon. His youthful face showed that they were of a similar age.
"You're the client, right?"
Simon handed him the request letter, and the man nodded as he looked at it.
"Yes, that's… right. More importantly, th-there's something I… must tell… you."
Amid ragged breaths, he forced himself to continue speaking.
"You've come all the way… to… Tarados… but… I-I'm sorry."
An ominous feeling gathered in Simon's gut.
"The job I requested… It's already over."
He pulled out a coin pouch with trembling hands and placed it in Simon's hand.
Inside were five worn-out gold coins.
"Th-The mission is complete… so you should return to Kizen…"
"…"
Simon held the pouch and stared vacantly at the man.
The man's face was pale as a sheet, and he kept gasping for breath as he looked at Lisa.
His younger sister was full of worry.
He smiled.
"I'm sorry, Lisa."
"B-Big bro?"
After apologizing, with bloodshot eyes, the man turned back to Simon.
Then, he strode forward and grabbed the hem of Simon's robe.
Swish.
Kajann extended his claws, and Serene plucked out a feather, but Simon stopped them with a glance.
Soon, the man begged,
"P-Please… save us!"
Blood gushed from his mouth.
"The Association, they're insane! Even now, they're conducting horrific human experiments on innocent civilians! Many of us are imprisoned in an underground base, and the 'experiment' is nearly complete! Once it's finished, not just Tarados but the entire continent will be in danger!"
Cough! Cough!
Droplets of blood splattered onto Simon's face.
"B-Big bro!"
"Please!"
He coughed up more blood and collapsed onto the ground. Even still, he clutched Simon's pants with his trembling hands and pleaded,
"Please, save them! The person pulling all the strings behind it is Nirthi, the leader of The Association! She must be stopped in order to—!"
Pfffkouoaagh!
In the end, he coughed up a massive amount of blood and collapsed. Breaking past the clamoring people in the tent, Kajann stepped forward.
"It's a curse! Don't say another word!"
At the same time, the commotion outside grew louder.
When Lorain pulled back the cloth and stepped outside, a large fire was raging across the camps, and assassins in unidentified black garments were slaughtering soldiers and bandits alike.
Simon shouted,
"Lorain, Serene, Kajann! Please handle the situation outside! Make sure to save General Amin and Captain Karakk at all costs!"
"Understood!"
"It's dangerous here! Coachman, please evacuate to a safe place!"
"G-Got it! Please be safe!"
The four of them rushed out of the tent.
Now, only three remained in the tent. The client was wheezing painfully, while Lisa was crying, holding on to him.
"Eliza."
Simon spoke into the empty air.
"Don't let anyone in."
[As you wish~]
Elizabeth's voice echoed from someplace unknown, followed by the sound of webs wrapping tightly around the tent.
Placing a hand on Lisa's shoulder, who was sobbing uncontrollably while clutching her brother, Simon said,
"Lisa."
She looked up at Simon as tears rolled down her face.
"Don't worry. I'll definitely save your brother."
"Si… mon…"
Thud.
Her eyes shut, and she went limp. Simon had cast Sleep on her, then gently laid her down on a cot.
Then, he turned toward Lisa's dying brother.

"Please fall asleep for a moment."
Simon layered multiple stacks of Sleep, reaching a state similar to anesthesia. Then, taking a deep, slow breath, he reached out with both hands into the air.
'Pure mana magic.'
Mana gathered in the air, forming a magic circle.
It was a barrier spell that his mother, Anna, had taught him. Unlike most other spells he knew, it was cast using mana. She had advised Simon to use this barrier if he ever had to use divinity.
Soon, a shield of mana enveloped Simon and the client.
'I won't let anything go the way you want.'
Simon clasped his hands together over the man's wound.
'I can do anything!'
He activated his trigger, muttering to himself to switch from necromancer to priest. A white, miraculous light emerged from his palms.
{Heal}
Whirrrrrrrr!
Divinity rippled across the client's body. Simon maintained that state for a moment, then pulled his hands away.
'His internal organs are damaged. I can't just heal the surface wounds.'
Simon took out a small knife.
{Holy Blade}
It was a light spell the ex-priest Professor Farahann had taught him.
A blade of divinity extended beyond the knife's edge, forming a longer, glowing sword. He had to make an incision and apply light magic directly inside.
'I've learned the theory from Professor Farahann, but…'
Sweat beaded on Simon's forehead as he gripped the blade of divinity.
'Can I put it into practice?'
He could only try. If he hesitated, the man would die. Simon had studied everything there was about priests diligently up until now.
'I will save him, no matter what!'
* * *
The assassins sent by The Association had all been taken care of.
The moment they were captured, they coughed up blood and collapsed, just like the client who had spoken to Simon earlier. It was a cruel method to ensure their silence.
General Amin had taken care of the assassins sent to kill him, and Captain Karakk, though seriously wounded by a blade that carved through his shoulder, managed to somehow survive.
Once the commotion died down, Kajann and Lorain returned to Simon's tent. However, the tent was covered in odd web-like strings.
"Simon!"
Fwish!
Startled, Lorain created a dagger with her supernatural ability and prepared to charge in, but Kajann raised his arm to stop her.
"Why are you stopping me? Simon is—!"
"Simon is fine. Just wait."
As he said, before long, the web surrounding the tent wore off, and Simon appeared from within.
His clothes were drenched with blood, and in his arms, he carried the client who had been on the brink of death just a moment ago.
"I somehow managed to take care of him."
Said Simon with heavy breaths.
Lorain checked the man's condition and was shocked. She had thought there was no way to save him, yet his breathing was steady, and his complexion was incomparably better it had been less than a minute ago.
'Incredible. The potions we learned about in Poisonous Alchemy wouldn't have been enough. How did he heal him?'
Lorain looked at Simon with suspicion, but he pressed on and as he carried the young client toward the soldier's medical tent.
'…'
Once Simon had disappeared from her sight, Lorain stepped inside the tent he had just left.
'Ah.'
The air pricked against her skin.
It was faint, but the jet-black within her body was reacting as if repelling something.
'Could this be…?'
Her eyes darted back toward the direction Simon had gone.
'I must be… imagining things, right?'
Thought Lorain to herself.
Perhaps Simon was far more secretive and far more extraordinary than she had ever imagined.
* * *
It was almost midnight.
Simon took off his sticky, blood-soaked robe, changed into fresh and comfortable clothes, and then made his way to the ruins.
"You're here."
The rest of the Kizen students and General Amin had gathered at the ruins' entrance. It seemed that Captain Karakk wouldn't be able to join this battle after his grave injury.
"What is it?"
Asked Simon, noticing Lorain staring at him. She quickly turned away, flustered.
"N-Nothing."
"It's time. I'll be opening the gate now."
Checking his watch, Amin confirmed it was exactly midnight and pulled out the key hanging from his neck.
"It seems The Association's assassins were after this."
Serene crossed her arms.
"But well~ we've waited until midnight, but nothing seems to be happening."
"No."
Simon stared intently at the air and said,
"The space is slightly distorted."
"Really? I can't feel anything."
Amin also scanned through the air with his palm until he stopped at a certain point in space. Simon was looking at the same point, too.
"Then, I'll be opening the gate to The Association's secret base."
Amin raised the key high and forcefully drove it into the air.
Rrrrrrrrrumble!
As if the space itself responded, ripples of light spread, forming a transparent, glass-like wall. Everyone gasped in awe.
Crackle! Crack!
Amin's hand holding the key trembled. The air continuously sparked as if the space seemed to open, but it refused.
"Is the lord's key alone not enough to open it?"
Kajann's face became grim.
Shiiing!
Just then, Simon stepped forward. Before anyone knew it, his right arm had become covered in Pier's bones.
"General Amin, please keep distorting the space with the key, just like that."
"Ah, understood!"
Simon steadied his stance and raised the Greatsword of Destruction. Serene, usually aloof, leaned forward with sparkling eyes, while Kajann smirked.
'What is about to happen?'
Looking puzzled, Lorain glanced around at everyone.
'The sensation of slashing…'
Simon twisted his waist, swinging the white Greatsword of Destruction filled with jet-black.
'…space itself!'
Claaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaang!
A long, precise line was drawn in the air. Then, with a sharp crack, the distorted space split apart. An entirely new space was revealed beyond.
Lowering his greatsword, Simon looked into the depths of the crack with a cold and unwavering gaze.
That was the inside of The Association's secret base.
To complete the 'experiment,' Nirthi wouldn't have fled.
"…Let's head in."
Muttered Simon in a bone-chilling tone before he took the lead, stepping forward.
"Hmm~"
Serene smacked her lips in amusement. Lorain looked at her.
"To think of using a cheap trick to provoke him like that~"
Wagging her finger back and forth, Serene said,
"There sure are many ways to commit suicide."
