Chapter 481

Another day came to an end.

After finishing his afternoon classes, Simon trudged toward the student council room.

On his way, the direct servants cleaning the student council building greeted him politely. Simon smiled and returned their greetings.

A short moment later, he arrived in front of the student council president's office.

Knock knock.

"I'm here, guys."

When Simon opened the door and walked in, he saw Meilyn and Camibarez chatting over tea. Both girls turned their heads simultaneously and greeted him cheerfully, saying, "Simon~!"

"What's up?"

From afar, he saw Rick waving his hand. Then, Rick pointed toward Simon's student council president seat.

"Now that you're here, please sign the documents there!"

"Got it."

Today was a day he had to complete the student council president's duties.

Simon took off his uniform jacket, hung it on a coat rack, and slipped on the student council president's coat hanging nearby.

'This really does feel great.'

A symbol of authority and the highest honor among Kizen students.

He still couldn't forget the looks on the first-year's faces the first time he wore this coat. Even the luxurious fabric felt fantastic to the touch.

Rick, too, watched him with envy.

"Whew, that's so cool. If it were me, I'd wear that everywhere, even to the bathroom and to bed."

Meilyn and Camibarez burst out laughing. Simon willingly took off the coat and handed it to Rick.

"Then, here, try it on."

"Serious?"

"Yeah."

Rick didn't decline. He draped the coat over his shoulders and started oohing and aahing at himself in front of a mirror.

Perhaps interested in what they were making a little game of, the two girls also approached, and before long, Meilyn demanded to try it on as well. Rick fled, clutching the coat as if his life depended on it.

"Haaaah…"

Simon sat down in just his shirt at the huge student council president's desk. Even the quill used for signing documents was exceptionally luxurious, its feather as long as his forearm.

'Let's get started.'

Simon had to review and sign the various documents submitted to the student council.

Perhaps because it was still early in their semester, there weren't any complicated documents. Mostly just suggestions or complaints from students.

'Installing a portable toilet behind the outdoor training grounds? This is definitely needed.'

Simon had experienced this problem himself. He had to walk thirty minutes to the nearest building when nature called during training.

He signed off on the proposal.

'Request for a cafe near the entrance? This one's a little bit iffy, I'll hold off on it for now.'

If he could, he would have approved everything, but proposals that were too costly or impractical had to be rejected. Also, even if the student council approved them, the school had a high chance of putting them on hold anyway.

Balance was key.

Sometimes, he had to choose between two proposals, like what to build on an empty lot.

'This is fun.'

Handling school affairs made Simon truly feel like the student council president.

After wrapping up his tasks for the day, Simon leaned back in the chair and closed his eyes.

'I wish my after-school duties were just this, though.'

"Simon."

He opened his eyes.

There stood Meilyn, draped in the student council president's coat with a shy face. Simon couldn't help but let out a gasp.

"You look great, Meilyn! Anyone would believe it if someone said you were the president!"

Meilyn smiled and played along.

"Hmph, then how about we switch? You can be the vice president."

"That works for me~."

"Ah, enough jokes. Take a look at this."

She rustled through some documents, pulled a small stack out from them, and handed them over with both hands. Simon took them and began reading.

"Oh, this is the restaurant evaluation plan. The one you described before, right?"

"That's right!"

Meilyn gave a detailed explanation.

Since it had already been agreed on by all four of them, Simon signed the document without hesitation.

"Hooray, you're approving it, right? Thanks!"

Meilyn hugged the documents to her chest and smiled brightly.

Just then, the president's coat was tugged off her shoulders. Meilyn quickly turned around to look at Rick, shouting, "Hey!!!"

"Cami should try wearing something like this, too. Here."

"So cuuuuuuuuute! You look like a little captain!!"

Simon smiled, satisfied with the cheerful atmosphere of the student council.

He was glad to be able to spend time like this with them. It truly brought vitality to his life in Kizen.

They sat together on the sofa for a while, sipping tea and chatting about the classes from their majors.

"Having fun is great and all, but don't you think it's time we planned this out."

Rick held out a blank table. Camibarez, who was in Simon's student council president coat, tilted her head out of curiosity.

"What's this, Rick?"

"It's a timetable. Tomorrow's the subject registration day!"

'So it's already almost time.'

The required major subjects for second-year students were set, but the general subjects weren't. Simon could choose up to four from Curses, Mechanics of Jet-Black, Necromancy, Hemomancy, and Combat Dark Magic. He already knew three of them were must-haves.

However, the one subject that had to be on his schedule no matter what was Mechanics of Jet-Black. Additionally, there was an actually required subject, Defense Against the Holy Arts, being added this year under Nefthis' command in preparation for potential conflicts with priests.

Rick had discovered that Defense Against the Holy Arts would be arranged by the department and didn't matter for registration.

"I'm sure everyone's making a fuss already back in the dorm. Here, I've already printed a full list of our options!"

The eyes of all three lit up as they looked at the list. Simon stroked his chin.

"This seems pretty complicated."

"It's only complicated if you overthink things. No need to complicate it. All we're really choosing anyway is which professor's class to take."

In the first year, timetables could change drastically, but by the second year, they were mostly predetermined.

The first two days of the week were reserved for major subjects, while the fourth and fifth days were for general subjects. The third day was a mix of both. Knowing that, students could roughly guess which classes they would be taking on which days.

Intermediate Mechanics of Jet-Black - Professor Jane Olivia / A

"By the way, what does the 'A' next to the subject mean?'

Asked Simon.

"Hmm…"

Meilyn brushed her hair behind her ear and frowned.

"Maybe because it's Professor Jane's class, so it's a 'Class A' subject?'

"Nah, it just indicates the time slot."

Rick shook his head and pointed to another subject as an example.

"Over here, you can see Professor Belya's 'Intermediate Poisonous Alchemy' also has an A on it, right? It means it's in the same time slot. So, you can't register for both. You'll have to pick one."

"Ah!"

"Now, if you really want to take Poisonous Alchemy, you'd have to choose Professor Crowley's Poisonous Alchemy instead of Professor Belya's, since it's in the D slot."

"Got it."

Simon scanned the list with interest.

Besides the core subjects of C.M.S. and N.H.P.C., there were also general subjects like history, economics, and foreign languages. These didn't contribute much to grades but were great for learning without pressure.

"There we go! This is too easy, isn't it?"

Meilyn began writing on the blank sheet of paper.

Intermediate Mechanics of Jet-Black - Professor Jane Olivia / A

Intermediate Curses - Professor Bahil / C

Intermediate Combat Dark Magic - Professor Hong Feng / D

"These three subjects are a must-get! What do you think?"

Rick let out a dumbfounded laugh.

"That's an insanely luxurious lineup. Well, if we can actually pull it off again this year, just thinking about it makes me happy."

"The problem is…"

Simon raised a finger.

"Everyone else would want the exact same schedule, right?"

"Exactly."

Rick nodded and stuck his tongue out.

A timetable featuring all-star professors like Jane, Bahil, and Hong Feng was a dream come true for Kizen students.

"This schedule is too idealistic."

"So what? Aim high! Dream big!"

Said Meilyn with a cheerful laugh.

Camibarez looked at Rick.

"But Rick, how exactly does subject registration work?"

"Oh, that's what I was forgetting! Let me explain."

The registration process itself was simple. Find the professor, submit the registration form before their spots fill up, and get their signature.

But at the infamous Kizen, there was no way they'd make it this easy. Normally, they'd set monsters, traps, and other hazards on the path toward the professors.

"Last year, I heard that they released monsters all over the second-year campus. You had to risk your life just to get outside for registration."

"…My goodness, as expected from Kizen."

Meilyn shivered in disgust.

"So, in short, subject registration is a competition, too."

Simon crossed his arms.

"It still isn't known whether they'll release monsters or set up obstacles, but if we're faster than the others, we can get the better subjects, right?"

"Exactly!"

Rick's eyes gleamed sharply as he raised his own finger.

"That's why we need to be really, really careful with our plan. Let's decide which class to register for first. Usually, you should be able to secure a spot for your first one without much trouble."

"Obviously, that should be Professor Jane's class!"

Said Meilyn.

Camibarez looked at her.

"But Meilyn, you're already taking one of her classes since you're majoring in Mechanics, aren't you?"

"Look at this, Cami."

Meilyn showed Cami the next page of the list Rick had brought.

It was the general syllabus for each subject. In other words, it was the details of what the professors wanted students to know, along with any required materials.

"It focuses on essential knowledge and skill development for necromancers beyond just Mechanics of Jet-Black. It even says Mechanics majors are welcome to enroll! Well, there may be some overlapping topics, but the more of Professor Jane's classes you can take, the better!"

"Okay! If Meilyn says so, then let's make our first subject Professor Jane's. Then, what's next?"

Camibarez looked troubled.

"It's so hard to pick which one to go for first between Professor Bahil's and Professor Hong Feng's class!"

"Ah, but according to my intel, registering for Professor Hong Feng's Combat Dark Magic class is the toughest. To find her, you'll have to search the entirety of Roke Island, not just the second-year campus."

"Then let's put Professor Hong Feng on third and start with Curses."

And so, the four student council members finalized their desired schedules and the order of subject registration.

The order remained as originally planned. Jane, Bahil, and then Hong Feng.

For the fourth and final subject, everyone agreed to pick something they wanted to take individually.

Simon didn't think much about the fourth subject.

He already had three major subjects, three general subjects, and Defense Against the Holy Arts, adding up to a total of seven classes.

With his busy schedule as the student council president, taking on an eighth class was something he needed to carefully consider.

They then finished deciding on their schedules and even prepared backup plans in case things dragged on too long or their plans went sideways.

"Professor Bahil's Curses class is a bit concerning."

Rick rubbed his chin.

"As necromancers, we definitely need to take Curses, but is Professor Bahil okay? He didn't even show up for the department selection ceremony."

A slight look of guilt entered Simon's face, and Meilyn glared at Rick.

"If he wasn't fine, his name wouldn't be on the list, you dumbass!"

"I wanna keep learning Curses from Professor Bahil, too!"

Simon nodded.

Of course, he felt the same way.

That night, in the Summoning department dorms.

Zzzz… Zzzz…

Toto was snoring soundly after being exhausted from today's classes.

Meanwhile, Simon was sitting at his desk with his lamp on, contemplating the rotation formula for his skeleton knight.

Plop.

Plop, plop.

Feeling cold water droplets splash on his face, Simon turned his head.

'It's raining.'

Swaaaaaaaah…

Heavy rain was pouring down outside. Simon stood up from his seat and closed all the windows.

'The subject registration starts when dawn breaks. I wonder if it'll stop by then?'

Simon stretched and returned to his desk, moving his quill as it scratched softly against the parchment.

The sound of the nighttime rain outside seemed to enhance his focus.

'Oh, this is great.'

Simon jotted down his newly conceived idea and underlined it firmly.

'If I start the axis of rotation from the bottom of the skeleton's foot…'

Thud!

Suddenly, Simon flinched and raised his head.

Swaaaaaaah…

He definitely heard some loud noise nearby, but there was nothing to be seen.

Toto was asleep, and outside the window, there was only the sound of rain. Even after he held his breath and waited, he couldn't hear anything.

'…Did I just make that up?'

Just as Simon tried to refocus on his studies…

Thud!

His senses on high alert, Simon immediately turned toward the direction of the noise.

'!!!'

And then, he saw it.

A clear human handprint on the window's glass.

Simon was so startled that he jolted out of his seat.

Thud! Thud!

A person's hand kept hitting the window, and soon, long, soaking-wet hair stuck to the glass.

Simon backed away, his face quickly paling.

"Wh-Who are you? Toto! Toto! Wake up, quick!"

Simon grabbed Toto and shook him, but no matter how hard he tried, Toto wouldn't wake up.

Thud! Thud! Thud!

'Wait a second…'

Simon's eyes widened.

For some reason, that ghost seemed familiar.

Simon gulped and slowly walked toward the window. Then, he opened it.

Swaaaaaaaaaaaah!

The sound of the pounding rain became louder as the window opened.

And there, hanging from the second floor, was a woman drenched in rain. Simon exclaimed in shock,

"Assistant Teacher Chehekle!!"

She was the chief assistant teacher of Professor Bahil's Curses.
