Chapter 383

Finally, the day of the advancement exam and fifth BDMAT.

All first-year students were teleported to a place called Skanber Harbor.

The island that contained the dungeon had unstable coordinates and could be dangerous on arrival, so they had to take a boat from the harbor.

The students followed the assistant teachers' orders, walked to the dock, and boarded the prepared wooden boats. A resident of the island stood with an oar for each boat.

"Four people in the big boats! Three people in the small boats!"

The assistant teachers shouted themselves hoarse to control the students, who were full of energy.

"There's no room for all four of us."

Muttered Meilyn, who had just come back from looking around the dock.

"We'll have to split up, I guess."

"Yes, it can't be helped."

Camibarez smiled through her disappointment.

"I wanted us to stay together a little longer before the test…"

At those words, Simon and Meilyn flinched and hurriedly exchanged glances.

Finally, their gazes turned to Rick. Their eyes were pleading for him to do something.

"Ufufu! Is it time for the problem solver to step in?"

Rick confidently walked over to the island residents. Since they didn't understand the continental language, he explained something with gestures.

"Student! Return to your place!"

One of the assistant teachers shouted loudly, but Rick clutched his stomach, pretending he urgently needed to use the restroom.

When the assistant teacher sighed and walked away, Rick quickly resumed his conversation with the island residents.

"Isa goba!"

The resident said something and ran off somewhere. And shortly after…

"Woah!"

Camibarez and Meilyn hugged each other and jumped in joy.

The resident had brought his own boat.

Rick slipped the resident a gold coin, shouting, "Yo! Yo! We're friends now!" They bumped fists and hi-fived, clearly getting along well.

"Alright, everyone, get on board!"

Everyone hurried to the boats.

Being on a personal boat, Group 7 realized it was a bit larger and more comfortable.

"Assistant teacher, is that allowed?"

Elissa, on the next boat, disapprovingly tattled to the assistant teachers.

"If you're jealous, use your own money, too."

Said Rick, high-fiving Simon next to him with a chuckle.

"Ah~ too bad. A politician's tongue is useless in a place where the continental language doesn't work, right? But you see, money speaks everywhere."

"That merchant bastard…!"

As expected from a friend of Simon, he was obnoxious. Despite Elissa boiling with anger, Rick lay comfortably on the boat, bringing his hands behind his head.

"Thank you so much, Rick!"

Just boarding the boat, Camibarez smiled brightly.

"This is the best gift!"

Coincidentally, today—the advancement exam—was Camibarez' birthday. Rick gave a thumbs up.

"Don't praise him too much, Cami. He'll be snobby for a whole week."

Said Meilyn as she tried to board the boat. But the current caused the boat to sway, and the gap between the boat and the dock widened.

"Ah."

She was about to step over but hesitated a bit and drew her legs back. She bit her lip so hard it turned white.

"Oh, scared? Did Meilyn just get scared?'

Noticing it, Rick immediately teased her.

Meilyn glared at him, then took a few steps back.

"I'm not scaaaaared!"

Then she sprinted and jumped into the boat.

Thud!

Squeak! Squeak! Squeak!

The boat rocked violently, and cold water splashed around. Landing clumsily, she let out a big yelp as she staggered.

'Wah!'

As she lost her balance and was about to fall into the sea…

Grab!

Like lightning, Simon appeared and caught her gently. He spread his legs to stablize himself and whirred up jet-black to stabilize the boat.

Squeak… Squeak… Squeak…

The rocking boat gradually calmed down.

"…Ah."

Meilyn's face turned red, ending up in Simon's arms.

Frozen there, her eyelids trembled, lips sucked in and out with desperate breaths, and her cheeks grew even redder in real time.

"Are you alright?"

Simon put strength in his arms. He held her round shoulders and set her upright with a smile.

"Ah, yes."

She brushed her hair back and sat with her knees together. Then, she put on a coy face and said in a very small voice,

"…Thank you."

She almost fell into the water and suffered the ultimate embarrassment before the exam.

When she was trying to calm her pounding heart…

"Wahaha! I thought the boat was going to capsize!"

Rick wasn't the type of person to let go of a chance. He was grinning mischievously.

"How heavy are you for a boat to rock like this? I thought a pig hopped on."

"What? A pig?! Do you want to die?!!"

Screamed Meilyn before lunging at him, causing the boat to tilt massively. She quickly returned to her seat, glancing at the island resident with the oar who had 'generously' let them on board.

"See, see! She can't help it, right, Simon?"

Said Rick while wiggling his eyebrows.

Simon and Camibarez laughed loudly while Meilyn growled in frustration.

They continued bickering as the boat set off.

Relying on a small wooden boat in the deep blue sea, where the bottom was unfathomably deep down, was quite nerve-wracking.

At that moment, Rick gestured to the island resident. The resident nodded and deviated slightly from the sailing route.

"…"

Simon and Meilyn also exchanged quick glances. Camibarez was clutching the boat's railing tightly, looking around nervously.

"Ah, Uh…! I think we're moving away from the group a little!"

As Camibarez said that and turned her head…

Ta-da!

A cake with candles appeared in the middle of the boat. Meilyn clapped and shouted,

"One, two, go!"

And, everyone said together,

"Happy birthday, Cami!!!"

They then all cheered and clapped. Though they couldn't celebrate too loudly or else get caught by the assistant teachers, it was a small birthday celebration just for Group 7.

Camibarez' eyes welled up with emotion.

"No time for tears! Blow out the candles!"

"Oh, yes!"

She clasped her hands to her chest and let out a strong breath, extinguishing every candle.

The three clapped again, and even the resident with the oar paused to give some congratulatory words in their language.

"Woohafuu! Hwaifuu!"

"Thank you so much, everyone!"

Overwhelmed with gratitude, Camibarez wiped away tears.

"If it weren't for you all, I wouldn't have endured life in Kizen. Meeting all of you is the best thing to ever happen to me!"

"Camii! You're so kind!!"

Unable to hold back, Meilyn pounced on Camibarez and hugged her. Then the boat rocked again, so she quickly returned to her seat.

"Ah! Why does that only happen when I move?"

As she grumbled with a blush, Rick responded,

"The scale doesn't lie."

"You!!!"

And so, sharing the cake, the four returned to the other students.

After about twenty more minutes, they arrived at their destination.

"Wow."

Rick looked stunned.

"…This is no joke."

Boom…!

Bang!

The volcano on the island was in the middle of erupting. Students' jaws dropped as magma, nearly 1,000 degrees hot, flowed down the mountain slope and met the sea water, creating a massive wall of steam.

"Get down, everyone! We'll move while staying low!"

"It's dangerous! Please make sure not to fool around!"

All the students lay flat on the boat, only moving their eyes.

Only the assistant teachers stood up, spread evenly among the boats.

Booooooooooom!

Just then, the volcanic eruption sent large rock fragments flying towards the students. The students screamed, but the assistant teachers calmly raised their arms.

{Spuma}

Flash!

The spell flying off the assistant teachers' fingertips hit the volcanic debris. The spells then transformed into large bubbles that trapped the debris.

When an assistant teacher swept their arms, the trapped debris returned to the volcano.

{Spuma}

{Spuma}

The assistant teachers continued clearing the volcanic debris with dark magic and resumed moving.

"Oh! Look over there!"

Shouted Meilyn, lying down while tightly holding Camibarez' hand.

"It's Professor Jane!"

Indeed, the students and professors who had entered the island first were waiting.

Unlike the assistant teachers, who used Spuma to clear debris, the Kizen professors had set up a safety barrier in one area. Any volcanic debris or magma that hit the barrier melted away without a trace.

"Professor Eric Aura!"

"Professor Bahil is here, too!"

Simon also inspected the faces of the professors.

"Vice-President Jane, Professor Eric of Mechanics of Jet-Black, Professor Bahil of Curses, an unfamiliar professor of Poisonous Alchemy from another class, and…

'…Professor Walter.'

He had recently received an additional mission report from Kajann.

The disappearance of Count Caron seemed suspicious, so, with Nefthis' permission, he conducted a personal investigation.

But even that concluded with no suspicions.

'Haah… Was I too paranoid?'

While Simon was lost in thought, the boats arrived one by one at the island.

The students disembarked, and the assistant teachers rushed around, checking the headcount.

"P-Professor Jane!"

The chief assistant teacher ran to Jane after making the count, panting.

"All… 647 first-year students… have arrived."

"Good work."

Jane lightly patted the assistant teacher's shoulder and clapped her hands, shouting,

"Attention, first-years!"

All the students turned to look at Jane. The noisy volcanic island suddenly fell to silence.

Rick scratched his chin.

"Sheesh, as expected from Jane… Her energy is just—"

"Be quiet, Rick Hayward."

Mentioned by name in front of the whole school, Rick shut his mouth.

"Years ago, this island was a peaceful resort, but unprecedented volcanic activity started due to the dungeon. From now on, we'll climb the volcanic island.

She looked around at the students.

"It's an unknown disaster. You never know when or how volcanic debris will fall or magma will surge. There will undoubtedly be monsters living in the volcano. But never handle it alone. Call the faculty. If you don't want to be injured and drop out before the advancement exam test even starts, that is."

The students shouted in reply,

"Yes, ma'am!"

Jane turned her head.

"Then, the professors can take the lead, and the assistant teachers will move on the side to control."

"Yes, ma'am!"

The assistant teachers scattered incredibly quickly, positioning themselves around the lined-up students. Jane looked to the side.

"I'm counting on you, Professor Walter."

"Cough, cough. Of course."

Answered Walter before opening a subspace. He still didn't seem like he was in good health.

Ba-thump!

What he pulled out from the subspace was a huge heart. Soon, a magic circle activated, and a large amount of blood gushed from the heart into the air.

Walter chanted a spell.

{Chasseur}

His soft, warm voice spread through the air. The blood gathered, forming a shape, and spread out like a net. It looked something like a floating roof in the sky.

It was large enough to cover all the students' heads.

"Then, let's depart."

Jane took the lead, with the other professors leading the students alongside her. The assistant teachers took care of the sides.

The students also started moving. As soon as they left the main barrier, volcanic debris erupted from the volcano, scattering gas as it fell.

Some students screamed, covering their heads, but…

Thunk!

The debris struck Walter's net above their heads. The net absorbed the impact, jiggling  slightly and the debris rolled away.

"As expected of Professor Walter!"

The female students following Walter squealed with delight.

Walter blocked the falling volcanic debris, and Eric took care of the toxic smoke and gas. Jane and Bahil handled other variables.

[Grrrr!]

A golem monster made of volcanic rock charged at the students from a slope.

So, Jane sent a purple butterfly from her fingertip to sit on the golem's head and clapped lightly.

Crack!

The golem's head completely shattered and collapsed, causing nearby students to yelp in surprise.

Fwip.

This time, Bahil gestured to the side.

Muspels, the fire-type monster that looks like charred humans, rushed at the students, but exploded and burst apart on their own.

'Oh, that skill.'

Simon blinked.

"What's wrong, Simon?"

"No, it's nothing."

With the big exam, the advancement exam ahead, the students had a good chance to admire the skills of the professors and assistant teachers.

And so, the first-year students arrived at the erupting volcano's summit.

The intense heat made it hard for them to even keep their eyes open.

"There it is!"

Inside the crater that resembled a monster's mouth, red bubbling magma churned. In the middle, a wavering dark portal seemed ready to swallow anything and everything that could be seen.

That was the entrance of the dungeon.

"Get ready."

Said Jane, looking at the students.

"You'll descend one at a time."
