Chapter 42

It was the same technique, yet the power was vastly different.

A colossal inferno erupted, consuming the incoming light beams.

With a flick of her wrist, the beams attacking from behind reversed course, driven by a sudden gust of wind.

Song-yi sat down, palm pressed to the ground.

Fwoosh!

A surging wave of water materialized, swallowing the light beams whole.

Ding!

[Good luck.]

She reached out and a sphere of light materialized, settling into her hand.

A white light emanated from her, dissipating the hundreds of light beams as it touched her body.

Then, with a resounding crack! the white space shattered.

Song-yi opened her eyes. She was back on the plane, feeling refreshed.

Slowly, she rose to her feet.

She could sense everything around her. The air, the mana, and their flow.

She walked towards the open door of the plane.

There he was—Shi-hu, on a call with someone.

“Looks like my sister’s awake. Here, talk to her,” Shi-hu offered her the watch.

“Master Jin, are you alright?” Youngsu asked with a concerned voice.

Smiling at Shi-hu, she replied, “Yes, of course.”

“I heard you intend to secretly clear the SSS Rank Gate. Are you really going to do it?”

“Yes.”

“…I see. Then, as Mr. Shi-hu suggested, we will remain in South Korea. Please contact me immediately if anything arises.”

“Thank you. By the way, how did handling matters go?”

“Everything else I reported beforehand has been handled, but one thing’s proving tricky.”

“What is it?”

“We need to replace the president.”

“Replace Choi Seok-hyun?”

“Yes. His demands are excessive. From providing a slush fund to a constitutional amendment for a second term, guaranteed re-election, and mediation between the ruling and opposition parties.”

The other demands aside, mediating between political parties wasn't her job. It was the president’s.

In other words, he wanted the presidency's perks without the responsibility, leaving the Salvation Guild to do the heavy work while he got all the credit and honor.

“How arrogant.”

“Yes, very much so.”

“Seok-hyun's children are at Yale and the University of London, aren't they?”

“Yes. The son is attending Yale while the daughter is at London.”

“If I recall correctly, their admissions weren't entirely legitimate.”

“That is correct.”

Song-yi paused for a moment before asking, “You said you’d replace him. Do you have a good stand-in?”

“Yes. Prime Minister Seong Gilsu.”

“What’s your assessment? Does he seem like someone who will cooperate and won’t block our path?”

“From what I’ve observed, yes. At the very least, he won’t try to overstep like Seok-hyun.”

That was good enough for her.

“Expel the children from their universities and eliminate Choi Seok-hyun. Seize his assets and return them to the national treasury.”

“He’s already been eliminated.”

“Good work. We need a clean slate to set up a new board. Bury all his corruption with him.”

Youngsu replied, “Consider it done. I’ll report back once everything is finalized. Good luck, Master Jin.”

I watched my big sister hang up and secure the watch on her wrist.

Uncrossing my arms, I said, “Sis, you’ve really become something else.”

“What makes you say that?”

“You’re replacing the president. Isn’t that a bigger deal than secretly clearing a Gate?”

“It is a big deal…” she trailed off.

Politics was complicated, on both Titan and Earth.

She continued, “But someone has to do it.”

“I guess so.”

“Shi-hu.”

“What?”

She asked seriously, “This Earth is no longer the Earth you once knew. Have you heard the term ‘strategic weapon’?”

“Yeah, online.”

“Strategic weapons are weapons like intercontinental missiles or nukes, and Unique Awakeners possess that kind of power. And while they’re not quite on the same level, SSS Rank and SS Rank awakeners are still pivotal to the power of a nation. Another way to look at it is…”

“The power of Awakeners is already above the law?”

She blinked at me in surprise. “…Are you quick-witted, or just smart?”

“Both. I’ve always been quicker and smarter than you, sis.”

She chuckled, patting my shoulder. “Coexistence between Awakeners and ordinary people is difficult. If I don't intervene, another Awakener will. It’s already happened more than once.”

I gazed at her silently.

“Do you think what I’m doing is wrong?” she asked me.

“Not at all.”

“That’s a relief. And don’t worry. I promise nothing will change. So, how’s the novel coming?”

“It’s going well. I’m thinking of starting premium serialization soon. More importantly, how are you feeling? More confident?”

She smiled. That was answer enough.

She radiated confidence.

I stepped back, extending out my palm, “Show me your progress. Punch my hand.”

“It’ll hurt. I’m different than before.”

“I know, just do it.”

And so my sister took a step back.

Ba-thump.

Her heart pounded loudly, and within it, the circuit was previously closed opened up.

This circuit was called ‘Unified Ki Channel’ in the Eastern Continent while it was called ‘Master Circuit’ in the Western Continent.

Opening this circuit granted access to the Energy of Great Nature, acting as a channel through which one communicated with the Great Nature.

It was also a pathway that Transcendent Ki had to pass through.

I watched my sister intently as a faint white light flowed out from her.

The light looked almost like an angelic halo.

The light enveloped her fist, becoming imbued with the Energy of Great Nature.

Unrefined raw power filled the air.

She thrust her first forward, her punch connecting with my palm in an instant.

And then…

BOOOOOM!

A deafening explosion erupted.

Mana and air was pushed outwards. A gale swept through the area.

My sister was pushed back by the impact, while I of course remained rooted in place.

She stared at me, bewildered.

Her expression was easy to read. She was wondering why she had been pushed back when she was the one who attacked.

I explained while brushing off my hand, “When forces collide, it’s only natural that the weaker one is pushed away. You used Natural Ki, not Soul Power. It’s what was supposed to happen, so don’t be too upset.”

“…You really are a monster.”

“That’s a compliment, right?”

“What do you think?”

“I’ll take it as one.”

She chuckled, and I chuckled with her.

She then asked, “So what is your full power?”

“Me?”

“Yeah.”

“Hmm… How should I explain this?”

I couldn’t think of a suitable word, so I settled on the following:

“There is no one stronger than me on Titan.”

She stared, speechless with a sense of disbelief, but I didn't care. It was the truth.

Anyway, we were now ready.

“Shall we go?” I suggested.

***

Uyuni Salt Flat, Bolivia.

It was already a popular tourist destination, but it now held the whole world's attention.

An SSS Rank Gate had appeared—unprecedented since the Great Calamity.

It would have been weirder for people not to care about it.

CNN reporter Natalie Beck held a microphone, gazing out at the salt flat.

She had been there many times, yet the scenery never grew old. The Uyuni Salt Flat took her breath away every time she laid her eyes upon it.

Natalie asked, “Director, is the World Awakener Association really going to clear this within the week?”

A man beside her, brushing dirt off his clothes, replied, “Yeah, that’s the word.”

“Is that even possible? This isn’t your average gate. How are they going to clear an SSS Rank gate in just a few days?”

“They’re gathering every Awakener they can from around the world. Apparently, they want a combined force of at least 300 SSS Rank and SS Rank awakeners. That’s the extent of what I know.”

She sighed.

Recently, a gate in Texas, initially measured as S Rank, had shifted up to SSS Rank with an unprecedented Gate Value.

Jin Song-yi of South Korea had cleared it… Or at least, that was the story until this morning.

At the World Awakener Association meeting in Switzerland, Song-yi explained the shift to SSS Rank was a measurement error.

A reporter on the scene asked her, “Is that really possible?”

It technically was.

Song-yi answered, “Don’t blindly trust the Detection Device. It could have another error like in the recent incident. As you’ve seen from the watches of the Awakeners who were present, it was a Ghost Gate. Normally, there should have only been one Ghost King. However, when I defeated the Ghost King, a wall crumbled and fifty-two more Ghost Kings appeared. I believe that was the cause of the misreading by the Detection Device.”

“Miss Song-yi, are you publicly claiming that this incident was just a measurement error by the Detection Device?”

“What do you mean by claim? Those are the facts.”

“......”

“Think about it logically. Though I cannot reveal my exact level, I am not yet level 600. Do you truly believe that a single awakener not even at level 600 was able to clear an SSS Rank gate, with the highest Gate Value to date, by herself? Does that honestly make sense?”

Her reasoning was very convincing.

There was a reason people tried to drag her name when she cleared the SSS Rank gate, claiming that she must have been lying or hiding something.

And so, with such a public statement directly from the horse’s mouth, it was hard to question it further.

Song-yi continued, “It was both a lucky and unlucky happenstance. As for the reason why I’m finally revealing this information? I too had tried to figure out why the Detection Device had an error.”

“Did you discover anything?”

“I did not.”

“......”

“Any further questions?”

And with that, the press conference was concluded.

Afterward, all attention shifted and was now focused on this new SSS Rank Gate.

It was undoubtedly the greatest ever recorded, an unknown world.

And yet, they intended to clear it within the week?

Today was Tuesday. So, taking today into account, they had Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.

How were they planning on gathering C-Runners, strategizing, and clearing the gate in just five days?

Natalie blurted out, “Has the chairman of the World Awakener Association lost his mind?”
