Prologue

Doppelganger (doppelgänger), meaning “double-walker”, is a German folklore creature that can look completely identical to someone. It has appeared in many forms of media from the past to the present.

Not only is it a unique concept, but it is an interesting subject because of the claims that one will die or face misfortunate if one ever meets their doppelganger. 

However, it is nothing more than just folklore, a scientifically impossible cryptid.

Or at least, that was what Jin Song-yi thought until that fateful event. 

‘A doppelganger?’

She thought in shock. 

Set aside the idea of encountering one’s own doppelganger and instead imagine discovering a doppelganger of someone else you know. 

A person’s life couldn’t be condensed into a single word.

It is a combination of that person’s experiences, livelihood, and environment—the things that make them who they are. 

So, how could something exist that could perfectly mimic all that? It made no logical sense. 

It would defy reality. Surely someone close to them would have noticed something was off.

But to not notice at all? 

Were they stupid or something? 

That would be the logical course of thought. That very same train of logic was the reason Song-yi struggled to understand what she had just been told.

“So what you’re saying is… you’re Jin Shi-hu, my real younger brother who went missing in 2024. And that’s your doppelganger?”

Song-yi asked, looking at the two identical men in front of her. Even their physiques were similar. 

August 16th, 2024.

That was the day the ‘Cataclysm’ happened on Earth.

Things called gates opened up and monsters popped out of them. Some humans began to ‘awaken’. 

Coincidentally, that was also the birthdays of the two men in front of her. 

One of the two men claimed that he had been forcefully summoned to a strange world called Titan, finally making it back that very day.

As for the other one, he called bullshit, saying that he had never gone missing at all. 

It was May 5th, 2034. It was a holiday known as Children’s Day in Korea, a day where the joyous laughter of kids filled the air.

It was especially bitter to drop a bombshell on a day like that. 

Certain that one of these two was bullshitting her, Song-yi let out a sigh.

“What in the hell…?”

It felt as if she was in a novel, one where things like doppelgangers existed.
