Chapter 179: Gathering Rankers (1)

The Hunter Board, the largest online hunter community in South Korea, was in an uproar.

[Title: My recent interview at Demir's Workshop]

A post uploaded to the freeboard became a hot topic, spreading like wildfire. The content of the post was as follows:

> I recently went for an interview at the hotly-talked-about Demir's Workshop, but I think I got rejected.

> As those of you who are regulars on this board know, I’m a violet badge (A-Rank). You all know that a violet badge basically means any guild would want to take me in, right?

> Of course, I applied because Demir's Workshop recently offered weapon support and top-tier benefits that were hard to resist.

> But like, what the hell? Every single person coming out of the interview room had a golden badge. They were all S-Rank Hunters.

> Honestly, I didn’t see a single B-Rank since they probably all dropped out from the resume. Even those with golden badges didn’t look too happy.

> That’s when I started getting really nervous. When I entered the interview room, a pretty-looking woman was asking me all sorts of questions. I was so tense I couldn’t even answer properly and just walked out.

> Sigh, fuck. I never expected a workshop interview, not even one for a guild, to be this tough.

It was the frustrated rant of an A-Rank hunter, completely stunned by a sight he had never seen at any other guild interview.

As expected, the comment section was on fire.

> Lol, it’s a workshop, but not just any workshop. A high-ranker runs it.

> Still crazy though. If you’re S-Rank, you basically have a free pass to any guild.

> I’m A-Rank and got rejected at the resume submission. The fact that you even made it to the interview means you’re insanely competitive…

> Their benefits are ridiculous. From what I’ve heard, it’s 10x the industry average.

> Yeah, they’re selecting only a small, elite group, so they raised the compensation.

Some were purely amazed, while some thought it made sense.

> But OP deserved to fail. Calling the interviewer a “pretty-looking woman”? Did you even research the workshop before applying? That was the vice shop master, Kim Jinah.

> Lol, for real.

> No wonder he failed. Didn’t even know the executive’s name.

> Probably because he’s A-Rank. Honestly, if you’re A-Rank, you don’t need to bother researching stuff like that anywhere else.

> Still, if you’re applying somewhere with high competition, you should at least know the basics lol.

> Are the interviews still ongoing?

> Yeah, I heard they’re running all day today.

And, of course, there were those mocking the original poster. Hunters of all kinds latched onto the topic, making it a hot issue. Moreover, it wasn’t just this community that was buzzing.

“Demir's Workshop, interviews still ongoing.”

“Most applicants are S-Rank? Rumors say even rankers have applied.”

“Why is a workshop recruiting hunters? Are they planning to establish an official guild?”

“A Review of Demir’s Vice Shop Master, Kim Jinah.”

Journalists, too, created various derivative articles just to boost their view counts.

“Phew.”

Meanwhile, inside the VIP room on the second floor of Demir's Workshop… Kim Jinah sat at the table, fingers interlocked, letting out a deep sigh. A thick stack of application documents was piled beside her.

“There are seriously so many.”

Surprisingly, all of them belonged to A-Rank and S-Rank hunters. But beyond just those hunters, there were also resumes of talents to handle the overall operations of the business—individuals who would soon be working in the Mulung Paradise that was about to be built, handling massive workloads.

“Hehe,” Kim Jinah chuckled, her face filled with excitement.

It was fun to put everything together, step by step, personally.

Creak!

That was when a skeletal sound echoed from outside. It was one of Eldrin’s subordinates who was currently acting as an assistant. Its arrival meant the next interviewee had arrived.

“Ahem.” She picked up the prepared question sheet and cleared her throat.

Murmur, murmur!

That was when the sounds of waiting applicants whispering reached her ears from outside.

Hm? What is it?

She tilted her head slightly and turned her gaze toward the entrance. Three individuals entered simultaneously.

“Oh? So this is the interview room?”

First, a German woman with pale, white skin looked around with interest.

“Damn, this guy! He really set this place up nicely, didn’t he?!”

Behind her, a middle-aged German man holding a mysterious sword and a Brazilian youth in an explorer’s outfit stood.

“Ahem, you must be vice shop master, Kim Jinah. Nice to meet you. I am Maximilian from Germany. Embarrassingly, I bear the extravagant title of Absolute Peerless.”

“Nice to meet you. I am Capu. I applied because I heard this was Hoon’s guild.”

Huh?!

Kim Jinah, who had been staring at them in a daze, suddenly shot to her feet.

“Oh my, did all three of you really come in person? I told you there was no rush!”

This was the moment when she, who had maintained a position of superiority even against S-Rank hunters, suddenly found herself in the lower position. Such was the kind of presence rankers had. Just having them on board increased national strength and boosted the power of a guild. Their value was something that could never be measured with money.

“Hmm? What are you talking about? I applied, so of course I had to come.”

Crackle!

Floa the Thundercry snapped her fingers, making sparks fly.

No way.

Kim Jinah swallowed hard.

She never imagined she would see Germany’s Hero in person. Nor did she expect someone like that to join their guild willingly.

However, she needed to get herself together. She was currently in the position of vice master of the workshop established by Rank 78, Joo Donghoon. Right now, she was acting as his deputy in his absence.

I still have to do what needs to be done.

“First of all, all three of you must have had a long journey. Please, have a seat,” Kim Jinah said firmly with a warm smile.

Kim Jinah couldn't just accept anyone blindly, even if they were rankers. They might not be coming with goodwill but rather with ulterior motives. So Kim Jinah asked each of them their reasons for applying. However…

“Hmm, I respect Hoon. I was able to become a ranker thanks to him, and I feel like I can grow even more by staying by his side. That’s why I applied. Also, I’ve developed a new skill recently… But I’d like to explain that to Hoon directly.”

Ranked 908th in the world, Capu the Guide—he was simply a fan of the workshop’s master.

“I feel the same as Capu over there. He is reckless but romantic, cool-headed but loyal. I don’t care how you compensate me. Rather, I’d like to be of help. So… I just like this guild. Or should I say workshop? I like this place.”

Ranked 905th in the world, Maximilian the Absolute Peerless felt the same way.

What…?

Kim Jinah wore a bewildered expression.

Typically, rankers would puff up their chests and negotiate their terms first, but these people were different. It genuinely felt like they were here just because they liked the shop master.

And the most absurd one was Floa.

“Me?”

When asked about her motivation, she pointed at himself with an innocent expression.

“Because Joo Donghoon, I owe that guy.”

“Excuse me… What?” For a moment, Kim Jinah thought she had misheard.

What? She owes him? Am I hearing this right? Is this what I think it is? What in the world had the shop master been doing while he was gone?

As the flustered Kim Jinah opened and closed her mouth in shock, Floa grinned.

“It’s just that I’m the kind of person who keeps promises.”

“Promise, you say?”

“Yeah, my master is far greater than you think. Maybe even more than you know. From now on, I’m going to serve him. If I’m going to board a ship, I might as well get on early and become a founding contributor, right?”

Kim Jinah couldn’t understand a single thing she was saying.

Is this something that only rankers can see?

Even with her sharp judgment, this was beyond her comprehension.

Either way…

These rankers had already exceeded her authority. The shop master would judge for himself when he returned, she thought.

“Phew,” Kim Jinah let out a soft sigh and looked at the three. “Of course, the three of you have been accepted. You’ll be given ample compensation. Hmm, when can you start work?”

“Start work? Before that… that guy, he’s in Russia right now, isn’t he?”

“Oh, you mean the shop master?”

Floa sometimes called him Master or that guy.

Kim Jinah was getting a headache.

“Yeah, the master guy.”

“…Well, yeah. It’s in the news, after all.”

“Then can the three of us go there first?”

Crackle!

Floa let sparks fly from her fist as she asked.

“I’ve got a feeling he’s going to clash with Gotham. We should probably provide backup.”

Gotham?

Again with the incomprehensible talk.

Well…

Right now, these rankers couldn’t do anything if they stayed here. If anything, it would be better for them to be with the workshop master, just like the Dark Empress.

“Alright,” Kim Jinah nodded without resistance. “Let’s do that.”

And just like that, three rankers joined the workshop.

Meanwhile, inside a dungeon in Russia.

“Hnnngh.” Bong Jaeyoung wiped the cold sweat from his forehead with the back of his hand.

“You still haven’t found a solution? We’ve been wandering for three days now,” someone behind him asked.

It was one of the surviving rankers, Thomas the Sharkskin, ranked 914th in the world.

“Just wait. Can’t you see I’m looking for the way out right now?” Bong Jaeyoung frowned and snapped back.

Boom! Boom!

“Arghhh!”

“Agkhhh!”

The gruesome screams of the survivors followed him.

Damn it.

This dungeon was more difficult than expected. The bizarre terrain kept leading them astray, and endless unknown attacks rained down within the jade-colored mist.

“You cowardly bastards! Stop using dirty tricks and come out! Fight like men!”

Finally, Bong Jaeyoung exploded in frustration. Even if they only ranjed in the 800-900 range, there were still five rankers—six, including himself. He couldn’t comprehend how they were getting slaughtered so helplessly.

“W-Wait a minute. What if… What if we’re up against Gotham? Why didn’t we think of that?”

“Gotham?”

“If it’s Gotham… aren’t there a few high-rankers in it?”

“Not absolute, top-tier high-rankers, but it’s packed with them. That’s what makes them so terrifying.”

“Shit, what the fuck was I thinking? Was I hypnotized or something? Why did I even come here…?!”

The group’s morale plummeted. The despair deepened as rumors of Gotham’s notoriety spread among the survivors.

“I’m scared.”

“Damn it, I want out. Can’t we run away?”

But the terrain here was bizarre—green clouds blanketed every direction.

Swish! Swish!

—Boom! Boom!

Even now, mysterious attacks rained from within. Because of that, over 20% of their group had already perished.

Grit.

Bong Jaeyoung subconsciously bit his lip. Even he felt a sliver of fear creeping in.

Damn it, what even is Gotham?

He knew it was some mafia group’s name, but he didn’t understand why they were inside this dungeon. There had been no mention of it before they entered.

Don’t tell me… Did he know everything?

The image of Joo Donghoon, who had warned the survivors, flashed through Bong Jaeyoung’s mind.

That arrogant bastard.

For some reason, even though he knew he was wrong and he had failed, he didn’t want to admit it.

Swooosh! Boom!

Another attack flew out from the darkness.

“Kgh! Cough…!”

A hunter clutched his stomach and collapsed as his blood splattered across the ground.

“…”

It was time to make his decision. At this rate, the outcome was clear.

Annihilation.

His miserable demise.

I don’t want that…

He had struggled to climb up to rank 101. He didn’t want to die in a foreign dungeon like this.

That means…

He felt sorry for the hunters who had followed him, but there was only one option left.

Whirr!

Bong Jaeyoung mustered all his strength, wrapping his energy around himself. Then…

“Fuuuuck thissss!”

He charged blindly through the green mist—not toward the center, but toward the outer edge.

I’m breaking through, no matter what.

Yes. Bong Jaeyoung had made his choice. He would abandon everyone and escape the dungeon alone.
