Chapter 284

At the entrance to the Halldun mountain range.

The sounds of horse hoofs striking rhythmically on the narrow path filled the quiet night. Five carriages could be seen traveling in a line.

Some men were standing on top of carriages, and others were riding beside them on their own horses. Each and every one of them was armed to the teeth.

Fluttering above the carriages and across the horses' saddlebags was a red flag with a black dagger stabbing in a white shield. It was the symbol of the notorious 'Sentinels'.

A young girl blankly stared out of a window inside the frontmost carriage, large enough for five people.

She was the girl who both Efnel and Kizen were searching for.

Sasha.

"Hahaha! In the end, that woman eventually…!"

"Ugh… We have to eat after this, fucker!"

Dirty jokes and foul language gushed out from all directions. The girl barely even understood half of what was being said.

Besides, her mind was elsewhere.

She had no clue who these rough men were.

What was going to happen to her.

Where she was headed.

The adults told her nothing.

"Kid."

Snapping her out of her thoughts, the guy sitting to her right warned,

"Just look straight. Don'tcha even think about running away."

"…"

Sasha lowered her head.

She was guarded on either side, there two more at the front of the carriage directing the horses, and there were four more carriages of people as well as all of those men on horseback.

It was just like the man said. She couldn't even think about running away.

"By the way, captain?"

The person who spoke before leaned forward, toward the front seats.

"Aren't we taking this a bit too far? She's just a nobody kid, y'know."

"You never know."

A middle-aged man, his hair slicked-back, answered from behind the reins. He had a stubborn look, his forehead deeply creased with age.

"We have to be prepared for monsters in this mountain range, and the client told me that there might be an attack."

The crony sneered at that.

"What kind of crazy motherfucker would attack us? Unless some shit-for-brains tripped over his own feet and gave himself a concussion, there's no one around here who'd go against us Sentinels."

"I don't feel easy even with this many people."

Said the captain, and he looked back inside the carriage.

"And clean that mess up, please."

"Fucking hell, it's so annoying."

Before anyone knew it, there were leaves and branches scattered around where Sasha was seated.

"You damn kid. Stop shitting these things out! You're making me a housewife with how much of this goddamn rubbish you're pulling out of fucking nowhere."

The gang member grumbled as he picked up the fallen leaves around her and threw them out the window.

Sasha had a special power.

An innate power that only a few chosen ones on this continent could attain.

Not dark magic, light magic, nor classical magic, but something just outside the norm.

"You're creeping me out."

A branch was sticking out of her wide forehead.

The man grabbed it in irritation and snapped it off. Sasha yelped in pain and covered her forehead with her tiny hands.

"How is this bitch even human?"

"Keke, that's why the village we found her in was scared shitless of her, too. They all seemed happy that we're taking her away."

"I kinda get it."

Sasha's eyes welled up with tears upon hearing that.

"H-Huh?"

"What's going on!?"

Branches sprouted rapidly out of her body and soon they were smashing through the windows.

Buds blossomed from the branches, and those buds turned into leaves that began to fall like rain.

"Dammit! What the fuck is—?!"

"Don't provoke the kid!"

Shouted the captain.

Then, he crossed directly to the back seat where Sasha was.

"You guys just keep your mouths shut. You're not helping at all."

Click.

He pulled a syringe out from a pocket in his waistband and stabbed it into her.

It was a tranquilizer the client had given to him to use when capturing Sasha.

As the tranquilizer entered her body, the rapidly growing branches and raining leaves suddenly stopped.

"Whoa~! She's a monster, a real fucking monster."

The captain punched the guy who said that in the head.

"This is the second time I told you to shut up. Just get rid of this mess."

"Please, switch me with one of the other bastards! Sitting here is going to kill me, I swear!"

Both of the gang members seated beside the girl grumbled as they threw the leaves out the window.

The captain returned to the front seat and leaned back comfortably.

'The slope's getting steeper. We must almost be there.'

If he could pull this mission off, he could build a seat out of the money he was gonna get. It'd be enough to live off for the rest of his life.

However, from his experience, there was always a good reason for such a large sum of money when the job was so small like this.

Neigghh!

Suddenly, a horse's cry came from outside. The carriage rattled and began to slow down.

"What happened?"

A bad feeling forming in his chest, the captain quickly jumped out of the carriage. The horses pulling the carriage in front were running wild with fear.

Soon, that fear seemed to spread around to the other horses, and they began stomping their hooves and snorting in a vain attempt to scare away whatever they were seeing.

"C-Captain! Over there…!"

A gang member pointed ahead.

Out of the pitch black forest, something pure white walked slowly toward them. Faces pale, shouts filled the carriage.

"I-It's an undead!!"

"Everyone, prepare for battle!"

Rattle!

Rattle!

Suffocating dread filled their lungs as armed skeletons pushed through the night.

"Be careful! It's a necromancer!"

"What?"

In that moment.

A small shadow darted through the night sky.

Soon, the figure appeared right in front of the moon, her red eyes seeming to stain the sky with blood as her mauve hair fell around her like a banshee's.

She shot her two hands down toward the ground.

{Full Bloom}

Craaaaaaaash!

As the girl, who had flown in like a savage beast, fell onto the frontmost carriage and drew a vertical line with her arms, a wave of crimson blood surged forth.

She leaped off the carriage moments before the 6-meter-tall tidal wave of red consumed the vehicle whole.

"Aghhhh!"

"Gasp!"

The people who were in the carriage were immediately blasted back by the wave of blood. Sasha, who was in the middle of them, opened her eyes wide in surprise.

Of course, Sasha wasn't hurt at all. The wave of blood parted perfectly around her.

Tap.

Landing on the ground, the girl ran over and hugged Sasha tightly.

"You must've been so scared being by yourself."

"…"

"Everything is okay now."

Sasha had never seen this person before, but her voice melted away the cold fear that had filled her veins.

"Get to the carriage!"

Realizing what was happening, the Sentinels drew their swords and charged in.

"They're after the kid!"

"Stop them!"

Screeech!

The gang members running towards the carriage came to a sudden halt. A large wall of ice had suddenly risen from the ground and blocked their path.

"What the hell is this?!"

Crrrraaaackle!

Rrrrrrrrumble!

The ice walls kept rising from the ground. Like cutting pizza into slices, it divided the group.

"W-We can't get through!"

"Hey! Are you all alright?"

At the same time, the skeletons on stand-by began to run toward the gang members blocked by the ice wall.

"Shit! The undead are coming!"

"Shield wall, stat!"

Clang! Clash!

Sparks flew as the weapons of the dead and the alive clashed.

No clear tactics, no coherent strategy, just a fierce fight to kill their opponent.

"God dammit!"

Spat the captain, who was once at the very front of the carriage.

'Judging by the number of skeletons, there aren't just one or two necromancers.'

"Captain!"

One crony pointed ahead.

"O-Over there…!"

Another shadowy figure strode toward them from further down the path, his robe fluttering behind him.

He was alone.

"There's a necromancer here as well!"

While the gang members raised their swords and looked out, the captain's eyes flashed with opportunity. He wondered why these bastards who would only control undead from the back would step out to the front.

"If we get rid of him, we can stop many of the skeletons! Go ahead and kill him!"

Waiting for this order, the gang charged in, a cloud of dust forming behind them.

The boy's eyes shone inside his dark hood.

The first gang member who charged in raised his sword high.

"Di—!"

Crush!

It all happened in a blur. The boy's open palm struck forward, disintegrating the cartilage in his opponent's nose. Blood was smeared all over the injured man's face.

However, the boy wasn't done. He stepped forward, grabbed the gang member by the hair, and threw him into the charging wave.

Pow!

The thrown gang member crashed into one of his allies coming in right behind him, and the boy jumped up and kicked their overlapping stomachs.

"Kuhuff!"

"Kugh!"

Having defeated two men at once, the boy landed safely on the ground.

"You bastard!"

Another foe, coming in from the side, swung his axe with a bloody scream.

Swiiiiiish!

The heavy blow cut through only air. The boy had stepped to the side and gave a quick kick to the man in the ankle.

"!"

His opponent now staggering, the boy swooped in like a bird of prey and smashed his knee into the man's face.

The screams of fury were nowhere to be seen from the man, now replaced with screams of pain.

"Kuaaaaaaaaah!"

Swish!

Another gang member used the chance to loop around and go for the boy's back, but he ducked as if he knew exactly what was going on and dodged the attack with ease.

"You bastard!!"

The gang member swung his sword frantically.

Slash!

Vertical swing.

Swish!

Horizontal.

Stab!

Thrust.

Sword slashes filled the air, but the boy dodged every blow like a piece of paper fluttering through the wind.

From the gang member's point of view, it felt as if he was hallucinating, as his sword kept on missing.

"I mean, why can't I—"

Slam!

The boy's foot struck the man in the side of his face, and all that escaped his mouth was a thin groan before he fell out cold. Blood trickled from his mouth.

"He knows how to fight!"

"Surround him!"

Now having a plan, the Sentinels kept some distance and encircled him.

Seeing this, the boy bent his knees, then kicked against the ground with all his might.

Pooooooooooooow!

No one was prepared for him to shoot out with the speed of a bullet.

He quickly approached one of the ice walls that separated the foes, landing right next to an archer who was hanging back.

The archer never stood a chance.

The boy moved fluidly toward his next target, his outstretched fist covered in a dark-blue jet-black.

Thud! Pow! Crush!

It was overwhelming.

Like a flock of sheep facing a wolf, all the gang members could do was wait their turn to be utterly annihilated.

"!"

Just then, for the first time, the boy paused and stepped back.

A murderous black sword strike grazed his throat, seconds away from slicing straight through.

The boy touched the blood from a small cut on his neck, then lifted his head and stared straight ahead in surprise.

"You're hugely mistaken if you think necromancers are the only ones who can wield jet-black."

The captain raised his black sword.

As he began to slash down with his right hand, something black formed in his left hand. Then, it vanished.

Ting!

The boy conjured a jet-black shield in front of him and barely blocked the black object. What fell down and sunk into the ground was a shuriken.

"People who make a living with their swords aren't stupid."

The captain crouched down into a battle-ready stance.

"We awaken cores now if we gather enough money. That power of yours is no longer yours alone, necromancer!"

Then, the necromancer pulled off the robe he had been wearing.

His bluish hair fluttered, revealing a boy with the dignity of a young noble.

"Wow."

The boy was younger than he had expected. The captain's eyes widened in surprise.

"You're talking about jet-black, am I right?"

With that, the boy vanished.

The captain turned around in surprise, realizing that the boy was charging at him from behind.

He only barely pulled out his shield in time to block the boy's punch. Or, he thought he blocked it in time.

{Hong Feng Original - Roaring River}

Pa-poooooooooow!

The shockwave from the boy's fist passed through the shield and struck the captain in the stomach.

"Kuhugh!"

He let out a painful groan, and saliva streamed out of his mouth.

'I blocked it! So how…?!'

Throwing away his now useless shield, the captain grabbed his sword with both hands and swung it wildly.

The boy, taking a few steps back to get out of range, then used his position to launch himself forward, his right fist swinging in a lethal arc above his head.

"Being able to use jet-black is meaningless…"

{Hong Feng Original - Bayonet}

Slaaaaaaaaaaaash!

All of a sudden, blood gushed out from the captain's shoulder.

He looked over in bewilderment, and the boy grinned as pulled back his arm for another blow.

"…if you don't have a good teacher."
