Chapter 294

Slaaaaaaaaaaaash!

Slaaaash!

The Greatsword of Destruction was a blur as Simon swung and swung. The onslaught of plant monsters and white apples were sliced apart further and further with every flash of the blade.

'Focus, focus!'

Simon's eyes were only focussing on one thing. He could see Figaro's surprised face at the top of the tree.

[You monster!]

As Figaro raised his arm, the huge branches of the gargantuan tree cracked toward Simon like whips.

[This can't be! This is untold levels of blasphemous!!]

Simon dodged, quickly hopping to the side.

"The only thing blasphemous here…!"

Memories flashed back to Simon, reminding him of everything he had seen on his way here.

The ruined village.

The villagers sucked dry to use as nutrients.

And Sasha, buried in the tree, only her face visible.

"…is you!!"

With another powerful slash of his sword, Simon ripped open a path in the quickly regrowing army of plants.

'For the rest of the way up… Use everything I have!'

Simon brought divinity into the new badge divine subspace he had acquired, and immediately Akalion leaped out on all fours as if it had been waiting to be called.

Simon jumped on top of it and infused its body with divinity.

"Let's go, Akalion!"

[Roaaaaaaaaar!]

Akalion started galloping forward with all its might.

Simon held on tight to Akalion's body with his legs, leaving the dodging and charging to Akalion. He almost looked like a knight charging forward on a gallant steed, sword raised in his right hand as he prepared a new light spell in his left.

Plop! Snap! Tap!

More white apples fell.

However, Simon only smirked as he finished his light magic circle.

'Thank you, Professor Farahann!'

{Farahann Remake - Spears of Glory}

Numerous divine spears shot into the sky, colliding with the falling white apples and detonating them early.

Seemingly getting the hang of the explosion range from seeing the white apples explode for the first time, Akalion cleverly weaved just outside the deadly pillars as it continued forward.

[Kugh!]

Figaro crossed his arms in the air in front of him, sending out yet another wave of tree branches.

{Divine Barrier}

Simon conjured a huge shield, deflecting the tree branches to the side and allowing Akalion to break through.

[What are you??]

Figaro's eyes turned red as blood. It wasn't an exaggeration to say that Simon's skills were like those of an active priest.

'80%!'

Simon's eyes widened.

He was really getting close now. He could now see Figaro with even his unmagnified eye.

[Dammit!]

On the other hand, Figaro was horrified, seeing Simon rushing toward him.

'Why are the paladins I requested from the Federation taking so long?!'

Under the Federation's system, they were obligated to descend upon the appearance of a Saintess to protect them.

This was the key point in Figaro's plan.

They couldn’t question him, a man, becoming a Saintess. Why? Because it was the choice of the goddess.

The Goddess’s power should be accepted, not questioned.

He wanted them to feel the contradiction.

'But…!'

He chose to use science and research to go beyond the restraints of religion, but…

'But what in the world is that?!'

A monster that neither scientific theology nor religious faith could explain.

Something proudly appeared in front of him that mocked all kinds of truth.

'I can't give up like this!'

Thankfully, the closer Simon got to his main body, the stronger and more varied things he could utilize.

He had managed to buy enough time to cast another new spell.

{White Flame Amplification Circle}

A white magic circle made of flames spread out from the fallen plants, and huge tree branches sprang up from them.

The tree branches were all dyed white with divinity.

[Go!]

The branches rained down like spears, forcing Simon to bring all his attention to his divine barrier.

Crush!

Despite Simon's effort, the first tree branch to approach ripped through the divine barrier like it was a sheet of paper.

Simon quickly pulled his head to the side, and a thin line of red appeared on his face. Droplets of blood rolled down his cheek.

'This power is incomparable to his attacks from before!'

Simon immediately deactivated his broken barrier, grabbed the Greatsword of Destruction on his back, and swung it.

Slice!

The barrage of branches was cut cleanly in two, leaving only stumps behind.

[!]

It was Figaro's turn to realize how much of a predicament he was in.

Despite the fact that this entire tree was Sasha's body, the vessel of the Saintess, the branches that had been cut by Simon weren't recovering.

Figaro came to a realization.

Taking direct damage from the blade of that greatsword… even a Saintess would die.

[Horrifyingly amazing!]

He was like a monster born to kill Saintesses.

[What an undeserving, yet worthy opponent to face on my first day of becoming a Saintess!]

{White Flame Amplification Circle}

Figaro doubled the number of magic circles, pulling forth countless reinforced tree branches.

He was also desperate.

Grab!

Akalion couldn't dodge a branch that rose from right beneath him, and the branch coiled around its hind leg before flinging Akalion into the air.

"Stay back, Akalion!"

Simon jumped off Akalion and landed back on the tree trunk with his own two feet again.

90% of the colossal tree was beneath him.

Only 10% remained.

Simon was running alone now. His white cape of divinity fluttering behind him, he swung his Greatsword of Destruction at everything blocking his path.

Slash!

Slice!

Slash! Slash! Slash! Slash!

Anything that moved, he cut down until there was nothing left behind.

'Gasp!’

Now, even his divinity was running out.

Divinity was more mentally draining than jet-black. His head was throbbing, and his vision was wobbling.

[You monster!]

Shouted Figaro in disgust.

"I'm taking back!"

Using the arm that wasn't holding the greatsword, Simon reached behind him. A divine spear appeared with a flash of divinity.

"Sasha!"

Several bands of divinity flew in and coiled around the divine spear, transforming it into a drill.

"No matter what!"

{Rete Original - Escrime}

Booooooooooom!

The spinning divine spear shot out.

Without even realizing it, he had recreated the image he had seen just once on the train.

[Kugh!]

Figaro raised tree branches in front of him as a shield, but…

Riiiiiiiiiiip!

The enhanced divine spear tore deep into the wooden barrier, stopping just a hair's breadth in front of Figaro's neck.

Feeling his blood curdling, Figaro gasped for air as his shaking eyes stared helplessly forward.

Simon was now right in front of him.

"The remaining distance is…!"

Simon charged forward with his greatsword.

"Zero!"

[It's no use!]

Simon immediately rushed to Figaro, but he noticed something strange.

White apples were rolling around on top of the tree, which couldn't be seen from below.

[Simultaneous explosion!]

A dazzling light flickered out from all the white apples. And then…

Ka-ka-ka-ka-ka-ka-boooooooooooooooooooom!

An explosion of white flames that purified all foreign matter in that space except for the Saintess themselves.

Figaro watched in delight as destructive divinity blanketed the entire top of the tree. Except, as his eyes rose, his joy plummeted.

Simon had leaped into the air, not getting out of the way completely, but…

'As long as I don't take direct hits from the blast!'

He landed back on the ground.

'It's bearable!'

This concentration of white flames was nothing compared to what he faced against Flema.

"Haaaaaaaaaaaaah!"

However, Figaro was still just one step ahead of him.

The moment Simon rushed in and was about to bring down the Greatsword of Destruction…

[Boy!]

Just one step away from Figaro, Simon suddenly was pulled to a stop. Quickly casting his gaze downward, he discovered a tree branch wrapped around his waist.

"Ah!"

Figaro was right in front of him!

Although he wasn’t sure of the distance, Simon felt like he could manage to slash him.

Bringing his raised foot down, Simon slashed with the greatsword.

Slice!

But instead of feeling his sword cut through flesh, he felt a searing pain coming from his right shoulder.

Simon looked to his side.

‘…!!'

An arm was spinning through the air away from him, gripping the Greatsword of Destruction.

It was his arm, blood and all. The moment he realized that, Simon felt a terrible pain rack through him that almost rendered him unconscious.

'Kuuugh!'

Simon bit down tight onto his lip out of pain while more tree branches wrapped around him.

[You lowered your guard at the last moment!]

Figaro clenched his fists.

[I shall commend you for almost killing me. Life and death was held in the balance of a single step!]

The tree branches began to constrict around Simon’s entire body, trying to crush him to death. If it weren’t for Pier’s bone armor, he would’ve been reduced to viscera right there and then.

[Boy! I won't be able to last much longer!]

Pier's bone armor creaked as it approached destruction. To top it off, both his right arm and the Greatsword of Destruction weren’t with him.

'Huff, huff.'

His consciousness fading, Simon saw Sasha’s face, the only uncovered part of her, in front of Figaro.

Appearing to still be unconscious, her eyes remained closed.

'Sasha…!'

Simon reached out with his remaining left arm toward her.

'!!'

The moment his hand touched her face…

The surrounding space changed in an instant.

It wasn’t Figaro’s torso sticking out of the tree, but a nothingness. Something which simply did not exist. He had stepped into a world of pure white, and no tree branch was trying to crush him. He was free.

[Hello.]

Simon turned around at the sound of someone’s voice.

He saw a girl with half-white, half-red hair. She was wearing a dress devoid of all color and sitting on a throne.

[I've always wanted to meet you, since we have been involved in the same troubles so many times.]

"Who…"

Simon's voice trembled.

"…are you?"

The girl grinned.

[I guess in the words of your language, I am the Essence of Purification.]

That's the Essence of Purification?

It spoke like a human and moved like a human.

[This appearance is an avatar that I created, and this place is also an image that I materialized. What do you think? Pretty cool, huh?]

“…There's nothing here, though."

[I tried interpreting the final state of purification, which is absolute nothingness. Ah, forget about all that stuff.]

She rested her chin on her hand.

[Why don't you make a deal with me, Simon Polentia?]

"A deal?"

Just as she was about to rise from her throne, invisible white chains appeared and suppressed her.

[As you can see, I'm being held down in an unstable state because of that bastard Figaro.]

“…”

[Sasha and I are caught up in his little puppet show. It's unpleasant. It's disgusting!]

Simon took a small breath.

"What's the deal?"

[Set me free. I guess you can slash Figaro down.]

Simon looked to his right. Even in this world of imagination, blood was gushing from where his right arm had been blown off.

"That's going to be tough."

The girl smiled, her perfectly white teeth the same color as the endless backdrop.

[I'll lend you my strength. Let's work together just till we get through this situation. How does that sound?]

Simon couldn't understand.

"I'm a necromancer. Even if you, an Essence of the Saintess, are willing to lend me your strength, how would that even work?"

[That's a very good question!]

She laughed and even clapped her hands.

[You're a necromancer, you're contracted to the Legion, and on top of that, you're a guy! I wouldn't have normally even considered it, but ironically…]

Simon gulped.

[You have the 'qualification'!]

"…!"

[You probably wouldn't know how great this is, but this is almost like a miracle, Simon Polentia!!]

He had no idea what she was talking about, but…

"I suppose this isn't the time to be picky about the method."

Simon raised his head and looked at her.

"I'll accept your deal, Essence of Purification.”

She was grinning once more.

[Hold my hand.]

She couldn't move because she was chained down.

Simon walked over and took her white hand.

[I'll show you what it is like to be the strongest.]

* * *

The world of nothingness faded, and Simon was back to the real world.

He was still restrained by the tree branches, and Figaro was still strangling Simon, confirming his victory.

Just as Simon came to the horrifying thought that nothing had changed…

[!]

Figaro's eyes trembled.

[No, H-How can this be?]

He frantically grabbed and touched himself in a panic, as if he'd forgotten something important.

'…Aha.'

Simon finally realized. The source of this power surging in his chest…

The next thing he had to do was simple.

It was to release a little bit of…

'This overwhelming power.'

Fwoooooooosh!

A mountain of pure-white flames burst forth from Simon's entire body. The tree branch that had imprisoned him was reduced to ashes.

[Why did the power of the Saintess…!]

Figaro cried out in spite.

Simon’s hair grew long and white, flickering like a flame. His eyes flashed with a brilliant golden light, and a cloth of white flame wrapped around him, as if to protect him.

Fwoooooooosh!

White flames erupted around Simon's hollow right shoulder, and his arm regenerated.

It was the regenerative power of the white flame.

[Kuhahahahahahaha!]

Pier howled with maniacal laughter.

[So you're now playing with even the providence of the world, Boy!!]

Simon pulled his freshly regenerated right arm behind him. In his hand, a white flame the size of a building arose before its shape solidified.

It was a 'sword'.

A foreign something made of a substance that didn't exist in this world. Its pure-white hilt was exquisite, and its blade was curving like a flame.

This was what Simon could wield with the power of the Essence.

Shiiing.

The Commander and Saintess raised his sword.

The blindingly white, flaming sword was so huge that it reached the ends of the sky.

And finally…

A miracle in the form of a sword descended.

{Simon Original - The End}

Slash!

The sword fell and fell, and fell. Then, it landed.

Immediately, everything it touched burst into impossibly hot flames, purifying all. Even the air around them began to ignite, cleansing it of every last imperfection.

That one strike…

[Kuhough!]

It easily cut right through the stationary Figaro.

[Ha… Haha! Hahahahahaha!]

Barely half a chest and a head, the top half of what remained began to slide down his burning corpse. Hysterical laughter escaped his lips.

His upper body slammed into the branches around him and tumbled downward. With the rustling of leaves in the wind, his body burned on the way down.

As he fell, he reached out toward Simon.

The boy with the white hair that seemed to be set ablaze stared down at him with an expressionless gaze.

[I…]

Figaro couldn't believe his eyes as the blueprint he had dreamed of his entire life was perfectly reproduced right in front of him.

[I wasn't wrong!]

"A man embracing the Essence of the Saintess?"

"Fuck off."

"Please, come to your senses."

He wondered just how many people had ridiculed him after hearing his ideals.

But they should all open their eyes and take a look.

That boy standing there.

The one who had established the power of a Saintess in its most perfect shape and form.

[I appreciate you, Commander. No…]

His lips parted, his mouth opening for the final time as the flames closed in around him.

[The first Saint.]
