Chapter 282

Having traveled in the carriage for almost a day, Simon got into the habit of looking at the view through the carriage window while resting his chin on his hand.

Over time, the boringly barren stretches of brown land also began to change. Every now and then, the amount of green plants increased, and the trees and bushes were thriving.

"When people think of the neutral area, they think of empty wastelands or deserts!"

Explained Seiwirr smugly, running his hand through his bangs.

"That's just a stereotype. In fact, many areas haven't been desertified yet!"

Seiwirr explained that the nearer to the center you were, the more desert you'd see. But the nearer to the outskirts, the more you see the forests.

In other words, Group 7 and Seiwirr were headed to the outskirts.

And during that almost day-long carriage trip, Simon had to listen to Seiwirr's hundreds of accomplishments.

Rick was mesmerized by Seiwirr's heroic stories and quickly became a passionate fan of his, and Meilyn was trying her best to chime in so she could ensure good grades. Camibarez was just nodding with a smile.

After quite some time…

"We're here."

They had arrived at their destination. This place named 'Khelso' seemed to be half-city and half-jungle.

The city seemed to be a hub of innovation, the stone buildings clearly being crafted by expert masons. Simon was surprised by just how much could be done with the exact same material.

However, despite the development, the plants here seemed to have found their way. Leaves and roots poked through the tiles and bricks, and some large vines wrapped themselves around entire buildings.

The people who lived in this city seemed to have given up on removing the endlessly growing plants.

"Ughh, it feels like my ass has been flattened!"

Grunted Rick as he got out of the carriage. The rest of the group followed after him, all desperately needing a good stretch.

Everyone's bodies were stiff after being cramped up in such a small place.

"Now, agents, may I have your attention?"

Seiwirr gathered everyone's attention and said in a serious tone,

"The Saintess candidate is in this city."

That one sentence was enough to immediately bring everyone back into the reality of their mission. The four of them nodded in understanding immediately.

"If we were a little bit late, there may already be priests lurking in this city. But don't worry too much."

Seiwirr flicked back his bangs and flashed his bright teeth with a smile.

"I, Seiwirr, will stop any light spells that may be directed at us!"

"You're so reliable, Agent Seiwirr!"

"You guys focus on exploring and finding the target. No matter what may happen, you shouldn't jump on the priests or strike them first."

"Okay!"

"Then, let's begin the mission."

Seiwirr led the way, giving the whole group a big thumbs up.

"This is a mission with the future of our Dark Territory at stake!"

"Yeahhhh!"

Cheered Rick, putting his hands in the air.

"…The future of our Dark Territory, huh?"

Muttered Meilyn.

Anyhow, the mission began. Seiwirr flattened himself against the wall of a building and walked as quiet as a mouse.

Having well-positioned himself in the shade, he poked his head out to check for anyone watching and gestured for them to follow. The four followed after him at a rapid pace.

Clang!

Back in an alley, against another wall, he slowly lifted the lid of a trash can.

"Please be careful. There may be traps set by priests."

Meilyn looked dumbfounded.

"In a trash can?"

Seiwirr moved in an overly elaborate way, picking up trash or discarded clothing on the ground and lifting every lid he physically could.

Rick, his self-proclaimed passionate assistant, did the same behind him.

"I'm about to get a reality check."

Sitting with her knees together and lifting some moldy food with the very tip of her finger, Meilyn said,

"Isn't securing the Saintess candidate a priority? We shouldn't be wasting time with this nonsense. We should go straight to our destination and—"

"I found one."

As Seiwirr lifted the lid of a trash can, there was indeed a pure white light magic circle drawn on it.

"What? Actually? In a trash can?"

As Meilyn approached in surprise, Seiwirr shouted,

"Watch out!"

Suddenly, a divinity bullet shot out of the magic circle with a boom.

"Wah!"

As she stumbled back, Seiwirr leaped in front of her like in an action movie, conjuring a defensive magic circle to block it.

"Please be careful."

Said Seiwirr.

The divinity bullet didn't disappear when it hit the defensive magic circle, wriggling as if it were alive.

"It seems to be a light spell with an ego. Perhaps there's a High Priest among the enemy."

Seiwirr opened his hand.

"Let me seal it."

Sssshhhhk!

An arm jade of jet-black came out of a new magic circle he made, grabbing the raw divinity and dragging it inside the magic circle. Then, it disappeared with a shatter.

"Agent Meilyn, are you alright?"

He said, reaching out his hand to help Meilyn back up.

She nodded, taking his hand and getting to her feet.

"I-I'm sorry."

"It's alright, everyone can make mistakes. But please do follow my instructions thoroughly in the future."

Seiwirr and Rick moved in the front again. Camibarez and Simon approached Meilyn.

"Are you alright, Meilyn?"

"Ah, yeah."

She let out an embarrassed laugh.

"I-I guess he's a great person, after all…?"

"He's the one Kizen chose to be our mentor, so he's gotta be!"

While the two girls talked, Simon looked grave.

'I couldn't react at all.'

To be precise, he couldn't even feel the divinity flying right past him before reacting.

'…I thought my sense for divinity had improved with my classes from Professor Farahann.'

Simon moved on with a hint of self-doubt.

Meanwhile, Seiwirr was moving in circles.

He would turn into another alley, claiming to have found signs of priests, or point to a passerby and say that person could be a priest, and then take a longer roundabout way.

Then, they found their destination. The house with the girl that was a strong candidate to be the next Saintess of Purification.

"From here, we have to break in through the front."

Decided Seiwirr with the sternness of a commander about to head to war.

"The priests will surely launch an attack. I'll take charge of both offense and defense, so you guys just keep your eyes on the destination and move toward it. Are you ready?"

"Yes!"

"Powerful light spells may come flying, so get as low as you can, cover your heads, and run. Well then…"

Dash!

Seiwirr sprinted out of the alley.

"Run!"

Rick led the way, followed by Meilyn, Camibarez, and Simon.

The street was totally empty, and it was just a straight line to the girl's house.

"Hmm? What? Isn't this a piece of cake?"

As soon as Rick decided to open his mouth…

Kabooooooooom!

The attack had indeed begun. Blinding flashes of light filled the sky, and projectiles made of divinity began bombarding the ground indiscriminately.

"Kyaaaaaaaaaaaah!"

"Gasp!"

The group members covered their heads and ran. Divine projectiles rained down one after another like shooting stars crashing down to the ground.

"Not a chance!"

And then, Seiwirr started his counterattack. He suddenly appeared in front of them, his long sleeves fluttering in the turbulent wind.

"I won't let you hurt my juniors!"

Seiwirr's moves were really fancy.

He appeared beside the cowering students frantically running, conjuring a jet-black shield to block the divine shells. Then, not even a step later, he formed another magic circle that blasted away a set of the priests approaching from the alleyways with just a wave of his hand.

"Just keep running!"

The ground rose like a wall to block the divine bombardments.

However, the priests weren't done yet. 'Exorcism' formed in the sky, but with a single wave of Seiwirr's hand, it shattered and scattered into nothingness.

"Woah, woah! This is insane! I'm sure Agent Seiwirr must be at least as powerful as a professor in Kizen!"

Rick was so happy that the corners of his mouth were on the verge of tearing open. Meilyn and Camibarez were just busy frantically running with their heads down.

Simon, who was running behind to check on them, blinked.

'This is obviously a very dangerous situation, so why am I not nervous in the slightest?'

It was to the point where he wondered if he was losing his mind. He was just observing the entire situation with nonchalance.

It's like he was on a nice walk in the neighborhood, not a battlefield.

"We're here!"

Rick dashed in and yanked on the doorknob.

"It's locked!"

"Move, commoner!"

Meilyn activated a magic circle formed in her palm, freezing a part of the door. Then, she smashed it down with a kick.

The four of them immediately burst inside the house.

"I-It looks like no one's around?"

It was a very old and shabby house. The four split up and searched around, but the place was already empty.

Then, they heard Seiwirr's voice through the window.

"Hahaha! Run, run! Run as fast as you can! I, the greatest necromancer in the Vengeance, Seiwirr am here! Observe my greatness!"

He shouted theatricality as he strode leisurely into the house.

"Where's the target?"

"I don't think she's here."

It took Seiwirr half a second to process what was said, but once he did he looked genuinely puzzled for the first time since they met.

"N-Not here? That can't be…"

Rick quickly said,

"She must've been kidnapped by the priests already! There's no doubt about it! There were so many of them attacking just before!"

"…"

But Seiwirr was spacing out, seemingly too stunned to answer.

"Agent Seiwirr?"

"Ah, mm! It's nothing."

Said Seiwirr, snapping out of his stupor.

"I'll chase down the fleeing priests, so please go question the nearby people for any information on where the girl has gone."

Meilyn took a step forward.

"Agent? Given the circumstances, it's obvious that she was kidnapped by the priests. Shouldn't we all just go after them?"

"Definitely n—! Ahem… I can manage chasing down the priests by myself, so please follow my instructions here."

Seiwirr then ran back out the door.

The four of them were left alone.

'Hmm.'

Simon glanced outside. The city was strangely peaceful after such a fierce battle.

"Ughh, they don't make any sense to me, but the mentor's orders are absolute, so…"

Meilyn crossed her arms.

"Following what he said, let's split up and investigate."

"Okay! What was the girl's name again?"

"Sasha."

The three of them scattered to gather information.

"Simon?"

Camibarez, who was about to leave the house, looked back. Simon waved his hand with a smile.

"I'm going to search this house a bit more."

"Ah, alright!"

Camibarez left, and Simon leisurely investigated the house.

[Kuhehehehe! This is ridiculous!]

He heard Pier's voice in his head.

[Haven't you already got a hunch that this Seiwirr person is a clown?]

'I do have a hunch, but I don't have any solid proof yet.'

There was something else on Simon's mind right now.

He recalled the Seiwirr's face, filled with panic and frustration at the news of the girl's disappearance.

'Whatever it is, I think this mission we're on is real. Let's focus on it first.'

[Kuhehehehehehe! I guess we can save the fancy cake for later!]

For now, finding the Saintess candidate was the top priority. Simon searched the house for clues.

'Leaves?'

There was a heavy amount of leaves, fur, and branches in the house. But it was indoors….

Simon also found some tattered clothes, a teddy bear with one eye missing… The house itself was old and couldn't keep out the breeze.

He was able to get some information.

The girl who lived in this house was poor.

She lived alone without parents. But there were signs that someone else had come and gone.

Looking around, Simon went to the house's storage room. The door was locked.

"Overlord, counting on you."

Slash!

A tentacle blade shattered the door, and Simon stepped inside.

"…!"

Simon's face turned pale.

[What's wrong, boy?]

Simon opened a seemingly abandoned sack in the corner. Syringes and strange vials could be seen inside.

'What in the world was going on in this house?'

"Simon!"

Just then, Camibarez' voice could be heard.

As Simon came out into the living room, she pressed herself against the window and said,

"Come here for a second! Meilyn has found an important clue!"
